Let's be honest here three star recruits are not gonna do it. We need to coach that can recruit top-tier players. Look at what Harbaugh did when he came in. We need somebody dynamic.

We have some 4 star recruits at the skill positions on offense. Our coaching sucks.

Tedford didn't need stacked recruiting classes to get us into the Top 5 in 2004, there is enough talent on this team right now to be competitive with most teams.

He was immediately winning 7 and 8 games a year even with a crap roster that had just gone 1-10. If Wilcox could even do that consistently then I would say keep him. It's pretty clear he can't.

Agreed. We don't have a talent issue keeping us from being competitive. We have a coaching issue. We have the worse head coach in the Pac-12 BY FAR.

We made great second half changes against AZ. Let's hope we can do it again. Plenty of time left for us to show up.
Welp, that question was answered. Who's ready for 2023?

I remember thinking how clownish U$C was for firing their coach on the airport tarmac. I kinda get it now…

OL is the glaring exception, but with good play calls we can work around that, how about some toss sweeps, regular play-action, actually BLOCKING on the WR screens?

Musgrave has hit a new low.

Coming into this game, Colorado was 131st in the Nation defending the run.
Musgrave had a bye week to prepare and made them look like world beaters.

I've recommended tossed (or pitched) sweeps on another blog so Ott can cut and find the hole he wants.

Anyone know the rule about what a catch occurs in the end zone. On the second or so play of the last series our receiver caught the call, had a firm possession of it, and then it was knocked out of his hands. Since he was in the end zone at the time when he had possession it was then a touchdown and whatever happened after that is irrelevant.

If your OL is your weakness, why run your shifty, fast RB straight up the middle into a stacked box with the entire defense rushing to meet him?

The stupid rule is he has to "make a football move" for it to be ruled a completion, as if "catching the ball in the end zone" is not a "football move."

And yes, running Ott outside the tackles, with a cut back option, should be our base play, with lots of counters including play action passing coming off of that.

Not only that, any time we would run play-action Colorado would read it and make us look idiotic.

Part of the problem is that we'd often run play action on third down plays when they're expecting a pass. It actually might have been better to just hand off on those.

Exactly, a run look on 3rd down to a defense means rush the passer.

That's actually one of the worse efforts I've every seen by a Cal receiver. He just lazily watches the ball into his arms and doesn't seem to realize there are other people on the field who will be trying to knock it free. That is completely on Starling. A terribly lazy effort.

I have to say that this looks like a possession to me. There is no football move in the end-zone except to possess the ball with a foot on the ground. End zone has different rules that field of play.

My friend is not a Cal fan but really wants to see Washington and Oregon.
I told him that I would go to the Washington game since we kinda already made plans but that he was going to have to figure something out himself for Oregon if Cal stinks it up again at home.
I'm not saying I'm giving Cal one more chance.

I think that part of this is on Plummer.
He took "forever" to find Starling and when he did he "floated" the ball.
The replay from side-view will tell you as much. Plummer found him late and never stepped into it.

It's not a great throw by Plummer, but the ball hits him in both hands while he's wide open and standing still. Should be caught every time.

Here's the problem. If we don't fix this quickly, you're going to see some of these four star recruits that we are all talking about enter the portal and they will leave and all we will be left with is a crappy offensive line and nothing else.

The OL is porous but if we switch out literally just one position (OC), we could be fine going forward, or this whole thing could implode overnight.

Receiver was very nonchalant about wrapping up the football. As another poster wrote, it was as if the receiver didn't think anyone else was around him.

Jonathan Smith has built a good OL at OSU with 2 stars. He just brings in a lot of guys (24 on the roster) and they develop them and play the best.

We should never have been in OT against that team anyway. Also, how was a talent like Starling on the bench this long, our talent evaluation on offense is totally suspect now.

So why with the game on the line in OT on the road with a hostile crowd are we relying on a (walk-on? I haven't even seen his name mentioned until today) who had just made his first college catch earlier in the game?
Nofado

I'm not arguing in the least the coaching is a major problem. I'll give you two words. Christopher Brooks. He leaves and he's playing on the top 20 teams and being very productive but why is that? Because they have a behemoth offensive line and they have a good offensive scheme two things that we lack seriously. I agree with you about Oregon state they have 24 offensive linemen. We have 385 linebackers. There's a disproportionate amount of defensive players on this team we need to balance it out. It is a polar opposite of Sonny Dykes.

if you are a defensive, minded head, coach, you better be able to recruit. That's the bottom line have a dynamic offensive coordinator who can work to get the offensive players that you need. Pete Carroll, and Lane Kiffin come to mind.

Wilcox should be a DC that's his strength.
