Apparently we're stuck with this disaster of a staff. To me the football season is over. Not going to another game this year. Not spending money on this program until there is a change. Too bad. I've been a Cal fan for over 40 years. I love my Bears.
I'm going to email and write a letter (haven't done that in a while) to the University, the Chancellor and the AD and give them the what for. Maybe if we all did the same and let our thoughts be known?
Fire Wilcox, Musgrave and McClure. The g@dd@mn offensive line truly in offensive. Keep Sirmon and promote the best to interim head coach and the brightest to OC.
At the end of year, go after Troy Taylor.
Go Bears!
Edit: if we keep this staff, our best players will be gone via portal, and then this program will finally be dead.
We are all upset and frustrated with a couple of horrible performances and embarrassing losses. To not go to the home games (if one has been going) and thus not supporting the players who make incredible sacrifices, is a knee jerk impulse reaction. The players need our support. Agreed on letters and the need to make appropriate changes (OC,OL) - HC not going anywhere (the buyout is far too great to raise). I have been going for 55 years and have only missed one Big Game - I will still be there supporting the team. To each his own, but wish you would reconsider.
I'm gojng to ask you a serious question, since you're one of the few here who actually knows what's going on behind the scenes.
How do you suggest we as fans let the powers that be know that this isn't acceptable? We can write emails till we are blue in the face. But I doubt much will happen until the AD sees a significant change in revenue. Or maybe that isn't even enough.
The problem is that the athletic department nor Wilcox has shown any inkling that they understand that this isn't acceptable. As a fan, how do we let them know that if a change isn't made, no one is gojng to show up to games?
It seems like if we just continue to attend games as usual, we're enabling them
Not going to the games punishes the players and hurts any potential home field advantage. So it becomes another obstacle to winning. Additionally recruits see the apathy and its a potential knockout blow to the program. Season is not over, its bleak but bailing when times are tough is hurting the very players who determine ultimately the outcome and believe me, weighs on their minds. Schedule a meeting with the AD, Beth and or Development officers in the Dept - write letters, talk to them at the games - they are available and open to discuss. They realize the poor unacceptable performance. Yes Wilcox needs to make changes and He will, but lets see how the team performs this Sat vs a very good team at home.
First, I am going to the UW game as I always do for all home games. My 12yo son and I flew to Colorado and sat through that abomination at Folsom Field, and even he was livid at what he saw from Wilcox and the coaching staff. (And happy-go-lucky 12yo boys are almost never livid). Thankfully a nice postgame hike in the Rocky Mountain foothills cured us.
4thGen, I appreciate your insight and I want to support the players. I signed up for a $100/month subscription to the NIL collective and we have Field Club seats. Pretty much what I can afford since I'm a salaried professional living in San Francisco with my family on a single income, and not independently wealthy.
At this point, the way you describe the players, they are
human shields being used by incompetent coaches and admins to coerce support from fans and donors and cover for their own utter lack of talent and guts. It's hard for me to take to see you call out Cal fans bailing when times are tough, even though I'm not the one bailing. Cal Football has not had a winning record in conference in 12 years. Let me repeat that.
Cal Football has not had a winning record in conference in 12 years. This includes several consecutive years under Wilcox and Knowlton. Are there a ton of other P5 teams that share this distinction? What the hell do you expect from fans, given this situation? Fanatical adulation? Why are we so quick to hold fans and donors who foot the bills accountable when there is zero evidence, other than vague assurances, that those benefitting most, our well-paid AD, HC and OC, will ever be held accountable? They are protected by big buyouts and have no reason to rock the boat. If they ever do leave, they will do so with golden parachutes on our dime.
Great, we can write letters. Do you have any evidence whatsoever that letters from someone like me move the needle in the slightest?
ps Washington is NOT a "very good" team. Do NOT set this up as if managing a victory over the Huskies means some kind of redemption for the coaches. I'll be happy for the players. That's it.
