Apparently we're stuck with this disaster of a staff. To me the football season is over. Not going to another game this year. Not spending money on this program until there is a change. Too bad. I've been a Cal fan for over 40 years. I love my Bears.

I'm going to email and write a letter (haven't done that in a while) to the University, the Chancellor and the AD and give them the what for. Maybe if we all did the same and let our thoughts be known?

Fire Wilcox, Musgrave and McClure. The g@dd@mn offensive line truly in offensive. Keep Sirmon and promote the best to interim head coach and the brightest to OC.

At the end of year, go after Troy Taylor.

Go Bears!

Edit: if we keep this staff, our best players will be gone via portal, and then this program will finally be dead.

The problem is - and always has been - institutional apathy. Starting with the Chancellor and the AD. They don't care. Nor do they understand how to operate the AD department. Firing Wilcox - though probably warranted - won't change anything.

We are all upset and frustrated with a couple of horrible performances and embarrassing losses. To not go to the home games (if one has been going) and thus not supporting the players who make incredible sacrifices, is a knee jerk impulse reaction. The players need our support. Agreed on letters and the need to make appropriate changes (OC,OL) - HC not going anywhere (the buyout is far too great to raise). I have been going for 55 years and have only missed one Big Game - I will still be there supporting the team. To each his own, but wish you would reconsider.

A new OC could help.

There is change - UW offered Cal TE commit Ben Marshall this morning.

So long as Justin Wilcox is our head coach, our football program will remain in the dumpster. In 6 years he has conclusively proven that he is just not head coach material. The sooner a change is made, the better.

I'm gojng to ask you a serious question, since you're one of the few here who actually knows what's going on behind the scenes.

How do you suggest we as fans let the powers that be know that this isn't acceptable? We can write emails till we are blue in the face. But I doubt much will happen until the AD sees a significant change in revenue. Or maybe that isn't even enough.

The problem is that the athletic department nor Wilcox has shown any inkling that they understand that this isn't acceptable. As a fan, how do we let them know that if a change isn't made, no one is gojng to show up to games?

It seems like if we just continue to attend games as usual, we're enabling them

I'm completetly serious when I say that we need to be rooting to go winless the rest of the way. It sucks, it's messy, and it's horrible for the players, but we need to excise this cancer. Winning a couple of games the rest of the way will just mean more of the same for years to come. It's painfully clear that the AD is fine with mediocrity, so the only way to force the issue is to not even be mediocre.

Anything less and we're dooming all future players to more of this clownshow of a program.

Not going to the games punishes the players and hurts any potential home field advantage. So it becomes another obstacle to winning. Additionally recruits see the apathy and its a potential knockout blow to the program. Season is not over, its bleak but bailing when times are tough is hurting the very players who determine ultimately the outcome and believe me, weighs on their minds. Schedule a meeting with the AD, Beth and or Development officers in the Dept - write letters, talk to them at the games - they are available and open to discuss. They realize the poor unacceptable performance. Yes Wilcox needs to make changes and He will, but lets see how the team performs this Sat vs a very good team at home.

Agree with 4th Gen here. You can express dissatisfaction with the staff and admin and still go and support our student-athletes. There will already be less fans due to these horrific games. However, Cal football Saturdays in Berkeley are only 6 a year. It means more to us and predates the current staff or administration. It's the collaboration and catching up with old friends at a tailgate or grabbing 2 (or 3) Top Dogs together. If anything I learned from the Pandemic is not to waste any more opportunities and to opt into events when presented. Cal football -- however hurtful and sad, although we are undefeated at home lol -- is something to continue to participate in, best I can. First, I am going to the UW game as I always do for all home games. My 12yo son and I flew to Colorado and sat through that abomination at Folsom Field, and even he was livid at what he saw from Wilcox and the coaching staff. (And happy-go-lucky 12yo boys are almost never livid). Thankfully a nice postgame hike in the Rocky Mountain foothills cured us.

4thGen, I appreciate your insight and I want to support the players. I signed up for a $100/month subscription to the NIL collective and we have Field Club seats. Pretty much what I can afford since I'm a salaried professional living in San Francisco with my family on a single income, and not independently wealthy.

At this point, the way you describe the players, they are human shields being used by incompetent coaches and admins to coerce support from fans and donors and cover for their own utter lack of talent and guts. It's hard for me to take to see you call out Cal fans bailing when times are tough, even though I'm not the one bailing. Cal Football has not had a winning record in conference in 12 years. Let me repeat that.

Cal Football has not had a winning record in conference in 12 years.

This includes several consecutive years under Wilcox and Knowlton. Are there a ton of other P5 teams that share this distinction? What the hell do you expect from fans, given this situation? Fanatical adulation? Why are we so quick to hold fans and donors who foot the bills accountable when there is zero evidence, other than vague assurances, that those benefitting most, our well-paid AD, HC and OC, will ever be held accountable? They are protected by big buyouts and have no reason to rock the boat. If they ever do leave, they will do so with golden parachutes on our dime.

Great, we can write letters. Do you have any evidence whatsoever that letters from someone like me move the needle in the slightest?

ps Washington is NOT a "very good" team. Do NOT set this up as if managing a victory over the Huskies means some kind of redemption for the coaches. I'll be happy for the players. That's it.

Nothing knee jerk about watching six years of irrelevant football.

Where is the support from Wilcox? Or Knowlton? Or the monied alums who are paying for this crap? Wilcox certainly isn't putting his players in the best position to succeed by not understanding that his offensive schemes are trash. These players committed here expecting leadership and success, not a trite petulant head coach who looks like he's about ready to cry after a humiliating loss.

If Cal doesn't have the appetite to create a successful program then choices have to be made.

I just texted back and forth with a former athlete at Cal who is fed up and pulling his financial support.

Sometimes tough love is the best kind.

It's obvious and also troubling that the general Cal football fan is not able to comprehend our dissatisfaction with the current program. I think we represent a small fraction historically (if any of us are left!?) WE see things differently since we are so plugged in. The students, casual fans, parents, band, rally, etc are looking for a "fun Saturday to watch the Bears play ________" Have dinner plans? What snacks did you bring? Oh, it's Johnny and Judy's first Cal game! I've grown so tired of hearing about the "traditions" and songs, cheers, music, contests -when in fact it has been sooooo long since the Bears have been significant. Bear fans aren't us. Sit in the stands and listen to the talk - it's not about the game generally. Yeah, we are the ones with the AM radio plugged into our ear and binoculars. We've been living off The Play FAR to long! Change that!?

Just want to clarify on bolded point because I think it is the most important part- I assume this means Wilcox buyout is cumulative of remaining years' individual buyouts? Faraudo of SI reported back in Jan that the buyout is just a single year's worth (so like 3.75 or something if we fired after this year). He must've been incorrect because I highly doubt we can't afford a < 4 mil buyout. Obviously we cannot afford a > 10 mil buyout

https://www.si.com/college/cal/news/wilcox-contract-details#:~:text=If%20Wilcox%20opts%20to%20exit,end%20of%20the%20'26%20campaign.

Could you please clarify this point? I understand if you are unable to give specific number but just the distinction between cumulative buyout vs single-year is an enormous difference. As an aside I think that if the buyout number really is that big then what the hell is Knowlton doing, how can you give that much money to a coach coming off a 5-7 year... but that's irrelevant now. Just would appreciate a full clarification on if I am correct in that buyout is > 10 mil as per scaling cumulative clause.

To expect anyone to go to the games out of "loyalty", to me that went out with multi-million dollar coaches' salaries, $5 bottles of water, NIL and all of that.

We go if we want to go, whatever the reason. All of our reasons are valid.

I will take that at face value. Then the big question becomes when is the buyout low enough? If the program simply has to ride out 4 more seasons, then I am out.

I understand your perspective. But if we're riding with Wilcox, then the next question is what changes will he/Cal make? With changes, both in coaching staff and approach, I can see things improving. If the buyout is huge, then Wilcox may dig in and refuse to make those changes. Lots of "ifs" in there for sure.

The extension Knowlton gave AFTER Wilcox turned down Oregon, after going 5-7 after having a losing record over 5 years after having the worst offense in college football over the five years was unnecessary and was financial mismanagement. It could even put the whole athletic department at risk if it forces us to stay with Wilcox and causes us to be left behind in conference realignment.

The hiring of Mark Fox after only a 5 day search , outsourcing to a search firm and interviewing only two candidates was gross negligence. He is paid nearly $1 million a year, he can't just mail it in. If he lacks basketball or football knowledge (ie his job) , bring in a committee of Cal basketball or football alums to help.

The extension Knowlton gave to Mark Fox ("for COVID") was financial mismanagement. He got his full (nearly $3 million) salary, no reason to give him an extra $3 million. He is driving the program into the ground.

The huge contract Knowlton gave to McKeever in the midst of abuse complaints was financial mismanagement. His ingnoring those complaints was potentially criminal and will likely cost the university a lot of money.

The unprecedented 8 year contract Christ gave Knowlton, even after much of the above, should be investigated. It was gross mismanagement. Even her hiring of Knowlton over hundreds of better qualified candidates (were better qualified minority and female candidates even interviewed as required by university policy?) should be investigated. These are very highly paid state employees guilty of gross mismanagement or worse. There should be consequences.

Will be announced very soon as to one change - new experienced help to come on board. And yes the buyout is huge (in the $20M+_ range today) People are understandably upset including me- not acceptable performance on the field. Let's see how the team responds this Sat night. And despite the quibbling about a 5-2 record, Washington is a good team that played Ucla very close on the road. Hope those that do want Cal to win, show up. Regardless- Go Bears!

Well if that is in fact the buyout Wilcox will be the HC for at least 3 additional seasons. You may not want to answer this but is this one change an on field coach or simply an analyst/advisor?

I am more upset over this buyout info you are sharing than the fortunes of the football program on the field. This is beyond discouraging. Conference realignment concerns, a failing HC that you cannot remove and what is looking like the ever increasing likelihood that the team will lose multiple good players via the portal and what will likely end up being the worst recruiting class in the conference.

You extend a losing coach and guarantee a $20M buyout? Beyond belief. I don't know what I fear more Knowlton having to hire a new HC or alllowing JW to hire a new OC and OL coach. He has shown zero ability to make good decisions in those areas.

Coaching candidates for help - could be as a HC, OC, or special offensive assistant. Stipulation is that they have coached for at least five years. Cal ties a bonus.

Troy Taylor Sacramento State HC, great 4 year record, prolific offenses. Local favorite for HC or OC.

Gary Patterson, big time HC experience, took TCU to a Rose Bowl victory. Six conference championships, 11 bowl game victories, 18179 record as HC, and now helping turn Texas around as a special assistant. Would he want to deal w the Bears academic requirements and bureaucracy?

Kevin Daft Dartmouth OC, former Cal assistant coach; 35-5 before this year at Dartmouth.

I could understand extending Wilcox as they did late last year -- if there was a fairly favorable buyout clause.

If we just owe him 100% of his salary throughout the length of the contract, no matter what, that is insane. And I don't believe it to be the case. Nor do I believe we could let him go later this year and only owe him $3.6 million. It almost has to be something in the middle. Those annual figures Faraudo quotes, are those less than his full salary for each of those years? Still, that seems steep.

WTH? 20M+ buyout means we basically gave him a fully guaranteed contract. WHAT??

If you take the $3.6 million quoted in the Faraudo piece and make it $3,6 million per year, it comes out to be significantly less than 100% of his full salary. However, still too close to his full salary for my tastes. $18 million..

I believe USA Today added up 100% of his salary for the remainder of his contract and came up with $25 million.

This administration doesn't listen to letters. They are extremely willing to accept mediocrity. The ONLY tool we have is our pocket books. And even then maybe that is not enough, maybe it is the big donors who have to speak wisdom. I hate the idea of not supporting the players but I kinda hate the idea of enabling this administration even more. I know we all know it but this is year 6. It isn't like we are collectively some group with crazy wild expectations. Profound patience has been demonstrated.

The fact that all the biggest donors didn't shake Knowlton to his senses before extending Wilcox (and threaten to withhold any further financial support) for that money/years/buyout amount is a large part of the problem. That's how it works at real programs.
