Cal Strong was/is here to help. And he has the background to do so. But they seem to think they have all the brainpower they need. Cal Strong disagree on this point . . . but he hope he wrong.
Not asking for Cal Strong help when so freely offered the very definition of not STRONG! That is, WEAK!

Stanford and SMU have Condoleeza Rice and George Bush lobbying for admission into the ACC.
We have no one.

coat tails
Coat tails is what got us in this predicament in the first place. We should have taken the bull by the horn and maintained a top level athletic program just like academics. We were allowing USC, Washington, Oregon and UCLA do all the spending and just ride the coat tail.

I wonder if Wilcox is kicking himself for not going to Oregon....

If Cal Strong was ever AD, he would never give any extensions based on other offers . . . unless the coach actually deserved it. And if the coach did deserve it, s/he would have to provide Cal Strong with a formal written offer from the other school. If s/he could not produce such a written offer, s/he would be immediately terminated for cause for coming at Cal Strong with weak lies.

He would never accept unsourced reports of an offer as a basis for an extension.

JK has to the absolute worst AD in the country.

There are better people at the high school level. At least they all manage to field cheerleaders.

Worst in the country, may end up going down as one of the worst in history unless we get lucky and Stanford pulls us out of our car wreck.

The fact Carol Christ hired Jim Knowlton, gave him a $1.3 million salary and then an 8 year extension while he was hiring losers, cratering our performance, failing to oversee our programs and throwing away $millions is the main reason I am skeptical about the claims that she is a mastermind and for the last year has "been doing more to get us into power conference then any other PAC-10 president" and all without even a rumor of her efforts from any source other than her dedicated defenders on this board (who have at least stoped defending Knowlton).

Over 30 years of watching Cal (people in trees throwing feces, losing Snyder, losing basketball, softball, volleyball, unable to build dorms, hillltop people filing injunctions, etc.) has me very pessimistic about Cal's future. Have we become this bad from #1 in the Pac to the last 4 that no one wants? Acc and Big10 may take Stanford accoding to the last article I read leaving Cal in the company of OSU and WSU.

Firing the current leadership seems impossible and I have no idea what our hiring process is like but we better not keep hiring the same kind of leaders. This seems to be the biggest hurdle we face. Change can happen quickly with the right people.

Firing the AD is relatively easy. If the Chancellor really wants to do so, it not hard.

Firing the chancellor next to impossible. Not for this mickey mouse stuff. As much as we all care about sports and fixing the People's Park issue, it a small speck in the balance of what a chancellor does.

---------------------------

But whether or not the Chancellor is replaced (which will not happen), the chancellor can stop playing by their rules. Move in at 3AM. Have the homeless removed and double-column of locked armed security with riot shields in place by 3:05. A large temporary fence fully installed by 3:10AM. Bulldozers arrive at 3:11AM. The whole thing bulldozed by 5:45AM. Hire construction contractors who worked for US in Iraq. They know how to operate in a war zone like this.

It doesn't need to be perfect by 5:45AM. We just need to destroy the current park to the extent that homeless can't sleep there and there and so there is no flora or fauna to fight about anymore. No notice given to the city or anyone else. Security and construction will be paid three times their normal rates, plus full indemnification. Anyone who interferes is thrown in campus lockup for hours to await questioning.

Of course we would get sued. But we are already getting sued every five minutes. So big whoop. And sure, we will probably have to pay damages here and there. But the problem is solved. It is not like a judge can order us to replace piss bottles. They are gone. We can reimburse each homeless person $350 for whatever is destroyed. No big deal.

So then the question is -- do you want a dorm, or a militarized construction zone? Because Peoples Park doesn't exist anymore.

Hiring process? For the AD? Not sure. But I think I can see the working group in my mind's eye. Chancellor, assorted vice chancellors, legal, faculty rep and PHA prez. Conspicuously, both the faculty rep and PHA prez have custom red Bruno Cucinelli "**ck Football" t-shirts on, and they're holding hands. I'm not seeing a big donor in the room, but I am seeing about a dozen masked minions in the back of the room feverishly taking notes and trembling. The image is fading...Legal is frowning, but everyone else has a glassy-eyed look and a thin smile. I'm hearing chatter about Ivy pedigrees and something about November in Positano after the hordes recede. A little laughter. Something about a search committee. Straining to hear...Robert Reich and Bette Midler? What do they have to do with this? ...Image gone.

This very strong idea. Let them deal with it if they want it so badly. In addition to what calumnus already mentioned, the city can trade us their school bus depot on 6th st. It is further away from campus, but would be a great spot for more grad student housing.

The downside of calumnus' plan is that it would require a lot of dealmaking with a very litigious CoB, who rarely operates in good faith. But the other downside is that it would rob Cal Strong of his more direct and militant plan. Other than that, it very strong thinking.

Might be the only way to get rid of JK and JW. Wait a year and start over. The only problem might be CC's successor. That person will be chosen as if there will be no athletics, or fb/bb, at least. So, that person will be choosing a new AD.

Might be the only way to get rid of JK and JW. Wait a year and start over. The only problem might be CC's successor. That person will be chosen as if there will be no athletics, or fb/bb, at least. So, that person will be choosing a new AD.

If I had won the lottery, I would have offered the Chancellor a seven figure donation to the legal fund -- but only If I could pick the Big Law attorneys -- to actually start winning cases, starting with firing JK for cause.

Others have proposed that athletics should be removed from the Chancellor's discretion by setting up a non-profit that would hire the AD. I think that is the only solution. With few exceptions, you can't expect a professor of Victorian Literature to understand the complexities of contemporary athletics which has become a big business.

Would the AD pay the university to rent its laundry, or would the university pay the business for its "publicity"?

How do you think the devastated players are feeling right now? Do think they go out this season amped up to prove a point or lay back and wait till next year to transfer? How are the coaches keeping them motivated?

This year is at minimum a four game audition.

People change jobs all the time, for a variety of reasons.

Actually, Richard M Daley did something similar in 2003. Meigs Field was a small airport on the shore of Lake Michigan in downtown Chicago. He wanted it gone in order to turn it into parkland. The Feds told them he couldn't, but in the secrecy of night on March 30th, he sent in city bulldozers to make the runway unusable by bulldozing large X-shaped gouges into the runway surface.

I drove past Peoples park this past week, I defy anyone to point out any 'flora and fauna' at that dump

Exactly. STRONG thinking. I never understood why we didn't show up one night with chainsaws and cut down teh trees by CMS. Sure the Judge would hold the Chancellor in contempt, but so what? Pay a fine and promise not to do it again.

Use McKeeverGate to get rid of Knowlton (or at least forge a departure settlement). Let him know that things will get uncomfortable for him and his reputation unless he leaves. Pay him 50 cents on the dollar to quietly walk away.

Hire an athletics-friendly Chancellor like Lyons or de la Torre.

Straighten out the conference situation (okay, not easy maybe... )

I love Calumnus' idea about People's Park!

Start winning. If Wilcox can't do it, get someone else. Madsen looks great so far (undefeated!).

Next?
Cal Strong!

Thanks for pointing this out Badger. Cal Strong was unaware of this. Daley had STRONG idea. Strong parallel thinking between Daley and Cal Strong. Strong history by Badger. And strong posting by Big Dog!

Strong all around!!!!

Great idea, but we would still need the cooperation of the admin and faculty, so diplomacy would still matter.

I trust our alums to do a better job building that relationship. There might also be a contractural obligation on the part of the university to make accommodations for athletes, both in admissions and coursework (remote work during the season).

The process needs to change. The chancellor needs to attend to the all important job of running a world class university. Big time athletics is outside their expertise. I am a big proponent of outsourcing the revenue sports (or all sports) to an alumni run organization that will treat it and grow it like a business while protecting our traditions, but at a minimum the AD should be effectively hired by and be answerable to an alumni advisory board.
