Not just for QB position but let's start talking about potential targets for 2024.

Utah QB Nate Johnson says he intends to enter transfer portal
Texas A&M QB Max Johnson enters portal as grad transfer

Targeting So/Jr would be ideal given the talent on the team Mendoza/Ott/Uluave etc

I gotta think Aidan Chiles will be on the market, although Michigan State will probably get a first look. He looks like a stud though.

I had brought this up before that the positions we need to bolster are:
  • Both lines because, well, you can never have too many linemen, especially if you are Cal.
  • We could use a little more top end talent at receiver, both WR and TE. Guys stepped up this year and acquitted themselves well. But we need a speedster at WR and more depth at TE.
  • We need to pick up some LBs, which shouldn't be too hard since we always seem to find LBs when we need them.
  • We need better coaching at DB not more talent but we could use some safeties.

These all seem pretty attainable but it will be a day to celebrate when we get a top end speedster at WR, a couple of really good OTs, an all conference caliber safety and another Brett Johnson type at IDL.

Let me add that I think we have a decent shot at grabbing some players from Oregon St. and Washington St. There is a lot of talent at OSU right now. Wouldn't it be cool to pick up some of those OL and Bolden at WR? I know, I know. They have to qualify. But so did all of those guys we got last year. And Furd is always good for a few OL that would qualify.

heart, how many idl are there gonna be in the transfer portal with brett johnson's unreal nfl physical tools that got gpas to clear berkeley admissions?

So is the best way to earn in CFB to excel the first 1-2 years in a lesser school then auction via portal?
Shocky1
How long do you want to ignore this user?
burritos, berkeley admissions are still very rigorous for potential undergraduate transfers but the graduate transfer admissions process into the cert program is significantly less academically competitive

just being a good football player with a sorry azz gpa at some truck stop school don't mean ****

Nice convo. But I'm not even sure we are keeping this coaching staff. So looking for tranfers has to be done with a grain of salt.

Agreed.

Filkins, if healthy, might be a consideration as a grad transnfer, with his speed. Cal had an interest. Not great numbers at Furd due to injury and Furd's oline. BTW, the Cal oline room if healthy, has some depth already.

why in the world would you say with a grain of salt? Where does that come from? They simply, finally, have an OC

I think we should give the transfer portal it's own thread because I've seen on social media that we're already offering players, and we should have a thread continually updated with offers, visits, and the sorts.

Please give to Cal Legends at https://calegends.com/calegendsdonate/donate-football/ and encourage everyone you know who loves Cal sports to do it too.

You don't need Twitter to copy/paste the links to tweets. I looked for them but I didn't see them, that said I also don't have Twitter so I'm not the most savvy at the platform

We need more talent on both lines. Two true tackles and an edge rusher should be priorities 1 and 2.

The portal opens for new entries on December 3rd. But to find a list of those who have already entered look here>>>24/7

There seem to be quite a few QBs coming available but I'm not sure that is where our attention should be.
I also noted that Mississippi St., Purdue, Michigan St. and Texas A&M have more folks entering the portal. Maybe that could be an area of focus.

Based only on ratings here is a position by position run down of players that might help us in the positions of need (OL, DL, DB, LB, TE and WR). BTW, does anyone know if we are getting WR Mason Sterling back for 2024?

WIDE RECEIVER:
  • Raymond Cottrell Texas A&M --4 star prospect who is still rated 4 star as a transfer. Cottrell originally committed to Georgia! But decommitted. Ray is only a freshman and redshirted.
  • Eric McAlister Boise St.--Eric is a sophmore and has been a big play star for BSU
  • Keontez Lewis Wisconsin--originally at UCLA so he can probably get into Cal- 3 year career has been up and down, only logging decent stats in 2022. Drop may be due to injury
  • TJ Sheffield purdue--Having entered college in 2019, TJ would only have 1 year left but he has been productive the last 3 years for Purdue, logging 114 catches over that span.

TIGHT END
  • Jake Overman OSU-- Was recruited by Washington--As a junior Jake hasn't seen much action in 3 years. It may be a combination of redshirting and injury.

OFFENSIVE LINE:
  • Marcus Hicks OT Oklahoma--couldn't find details but he appears to have been at Oklahoma since 2019 and has not logged stats.

DEFENSIVE LINE
  • Joey Slackman Pennsylvania--although from a lower division, he is already receiving lots of D1 offers, including several ACC schools, one of them being Duke. Maybe Cal can pull him.
  • Simeon Barrow Jr. Michigan St.--has 10.5 sacks in his 3 year MSU career
  • Stephon Wright SMU-- originally went to Arizona St. as a 4 star--A junior who has logged limited stats and did not play in 2020, 21 or 23.
  • Laine Jenkins Illinois--Was originally committed to Oklahoma--Sophmore has not played
  • Jamar Sekona USC--Limited stats since he arrived in 2019

LINEBACKER
  • JR Walker Virginia Tech--Arrived at VT as a 4 star prospect--no info
  • Will Shaffer ASU- has had limited stats in his 3 year career at ASU
  • Octavius Brothers Purdue--Was originally at Auburn--no info.

DEFENSIVE BACK
  • Jahmar Brown Safety Coastal Carolina--this is the second time Jahmar has entered the portal having formerly transferred from S. Carolina.--limited stats in 4 years.
  • Jadarrius Perkins CB Florida--was originally at Missouri--possibly a junior has not played much since freshman year.
  • Kenzel Lawler CB Utah--sophmore who has not gotten on the field much
  • Jadon Pearson Safety Utah--junior who hasn't gotten on the field much

No punters are yet available.
Needless to say, many of these players won't qualify. But this what is out there right now. For sure the quality and quantity will greatly expand a week from now.

He will. He's already taken most of the staff, and said that he knew was leaving for a long time, which is weird considering they just played their big rivalry game.

None in particular but it's still not assured. Maybe they end up liking our coaches, or the opportunities on our roster, or staying on the West coast, or living in the Bay Area, or the idea of ending their college career with a Cal degree. Probably not but no reason not to give it a shot, right?

Caleb Fauria ?

He was on an offense that doesn't play tight ends and then blames their o line for QB sacks and poor run game.

the cal football program is very limited in the # of available schollys for 2024, actionable offers will only be extended on an extremely selective basis to immediate impact starters...and no the staff is not gonna offer the buffs tight end that caught zero passes this season (ben marshall is gonna be the next jack endries) or random stanford players that haven't even declared for the transfer portal (that would be illegal)

read the monster for the current #s of departing & incoming schollys for 2024

Texas A&M QB Max Johnson enters portal as grad transfer

Nate Johnson seemed to struggle a bit at Utah in the game they lost to OSU. I believed the announcers said he was battling injury, but even so, he may be a bit of a project. But 10.47 100m speed at the QB position would give any coach something to think about.
