True but I actually think that the transfer portal and NIL has created much more CFB parity. Teams can't horde 4*/5* recruits for multiple years in loaded position groups where guys have to just sit and wait their turn and only get one shot at transferring to make it right.
Guys don't have to be as patient and can go somewhere else to showcase their talents. Lots of players who go to an Alabama or OhSt would rather go be **the** guy at a Louisville (who was really good this year), FAU, or Memphis rather than wait it out for their turn (which might never come) at the big programs.
If a guy isn't a starter and a stud their freshman year they can go prove themselves somewhere else and then transfer back to a CFP contender if they want. I'll take 1+ years of elite play regardless of transferring out
The idea of full time immediate eligibility for multiple transfers along with NIL does have the potential of evening the playing field some. But much of the supposed parity is related to the power of the collective. How much money do they really have and can they achieve it year after year.
We are already seeing some fatigue in that area. If you buy a player that player better work out. Some programs will just donate blindly regardless of the success of the team or purchased players. But the majority of donors want a bit more for their donations. Like wins and an idea that the staff understands what they are actually buying. If you spend heavily in the portal you better win. The coaches need a strong collective or they have no chance. But the collective needs wins to stay strong.
But this ruling almost certainly has the attention of the conference commissioners, University Presidents, ADs and coaches everywhere. The players want their cake now and their agents/lawyers are trying to make sure they can.
There has been talk (including NCAA President Charlie Baker) to create a new separate entity for college football. Pay the players directly and find some common ground with the players to negotiate things like compensation, player movement, insurance and medical. Create new recruiting rules, scholarship numbers (more seems likely) , 5 year eligibility with no redshirts, and form a real governance of these rules. And try and find a way to make NIL a more manageable system and not pay for play.
In the NFL there are salary caps, a draft, contracts and a set number of teams. And a TV contract that pays evenly. College has different admissions, no salary cap, different TV contracts based on conference affiliaition rather than success. Vanderbilt gets the same TV revenue as does Alabama. Indiana the same as Ohio St. And long time winning programs like USC and FSU are actively trying to move. USC as we saw was successful and look at the ramifications for Cal. The P12 is now the P2 and look at all the litigation and posturing that has brought.
If these college football power brokers do not get together and find a solution ASAP these players and their reps will tear down this current system via lawsuits. And they will win. Finding common ground that each side can live with is essential. It won;t be easy but must be done.
And these coaches and schools that continue to color outside the lines must face strict and immediate punishment for doing so.
