It's seeming less and less like the college football I grew to love, but maybe some more wins can keep that love alive.
Thanks to the California Master Plan for Higher Education we have an entire institutional operation for transfer students that we can utilize.

True but I actually think that the transfer portal and NIL has created much more CFB parity. Teams can't horde 4*/5* recruits for multiple years in loaded position groups where guys have to just sit and wait their turn and only get one shot at transferring to make it right.

Guys don't have to be as patient and can go somewhere else to showcase their talents. Lots of players who go to an Alabama or OhSt would rather go be **the** guy at a Louisville (who was really good this year), FAU, or Memphis rather than wait it out for their turn (which might never come) at the big programs.

If a guy isn't a starter and a stud their freshman year they can go prove themselves somewhere else and then transfer back to a CFP contender if they want. I'll take 1+ years of elite play regardless of transferring out
The idea of full time immediate eligibility for multiple transfers along with NIL does have the potential of evening the playing field some. But much of the supposed parity is related to the power of the collective. How much money do they really have and can they achieve it year after year.

We are already seeing some fatigue in that area. If you buy a player that player better work out. Some programs will just donate blindly regardless of the success of the team or purchased players. But the majority of donors want a bit more for their donations. Like wins and an idea that the staff understands what they are actually buying. If you spend heavily in the portal you better win. The coaches need a strong collective or they have no chance. But the collective needs wins to stay strong.

But this ruling almost certainly has the attention of the conference commissioners, University Presidents, ADs and coaches everywhere. The players want their cake now and their agents/lawyers are trying to make sure they can.

There has been talk (including NCAA President Charlie Baker) to create a new separate entity for college football. Pay the players directly and find some common ground with the players to negotiate things like compensation, player movement, insurance and medical. Create new recruiting rules, scholarship numbers (more seems likely) , 5 year eligibility with no redshirts, and form a real governance of these rules. And try and find a way to make NIL a more manageable system and not pay for play.

In the NFL there are salary caps, a draft, contracts and a set number of teams. And a TV contract that pays evenly. College has different admissions, no salary cap, different TV contracts based on conference affiliaition rather than success. Vanderbilt gets the same TV revenue as does Alabama. Indiana the same as Ohio St. And long time winning programs like USC and FSU are actively trying to move. USC as we saw was successful and look at the ramifications for Cal. The P12 is now the P2 and look at all the litigation and posturing that has brought.

If these college football power brokers do not get together and find a solution ASAP these players and their reps will tear down this current system via lawsuits. And they will win. Finding common ground that each side can live with is essential. It won;t be easy but must be done.

And these coaches and schools that continue to color outside the lines must face strict and immediate punishment for doing so.

Just look at how many top tier teams there were this year (8 deserved playoff spots at least reasonably equally) and look how the SEC had their weakest year in a long time. I think NIL balanced out talent across the Power conferences as much as it's been since pre-CFP era

SEC boosters have been handing out "NIL" payments for years. Making it legal just allowed others to narrow the gap.
It's funny. When the reality and complexities of NIL became more clear I thought the very same thing about U$C...I felt it would actually hurt them.

The Supreme Court, in a unicorn unanimous decision, has made it clear college football is a business and the antitrust laws fully apply.

Any attempt to form a cartel, control player earnings, restrict play to play, or punish non-confirming programs is illegal, with the potential for treble damage awards and prison time for conspirators.

The NFL and and NBA are able to institute rules like salary caps because the players had a union that represents ALL the players for the owners to collectively bargain with. I cannot see how forming such a players union is possible, there are tens of thousands of players and potential players (high school) and many are minors.

A coherent system would need to either be implemented by Congress (good luck with that) or would need to be market based (like English soccer, with results, promotion and relegation determining your level of play.

USC wide receiver Mario Williams has entered the NCAA transfer portal. He spent two years with the Trojans after starting his career at Oklahoma.

Williams was one of Caleb Williams' top targets at both Oklahoma and USC. This past season, he totaled 29 receptions which tied for the third-most on the Trojans' roster for 305 yards and two touchdowns. In 2022, though, he had the best year of his career with 40 receptions for 631 receiving yards and five touchdowns. That made him USC's third-leading receiver.

USC quarterback Malachi Nelson is expected to enter the transfer portal after just one season with the Trojans, according to 247Sports. Nelson was a former five-star recruit who has been intertwined with USC coach Lincoln Riley since July 2021.

Nelson was a blue-chip recruit consistently in contention to be the No. 1 quarterback in the Class of 2023. He ended up rated as the No. 5 passer and No. 13 overall recruit in the Top247 rankings out of Los Alamitos High School in Southern California. Nelson initially committed to Oklahoma but flipped to USC two days after Riley left the Sooners for the Trojans.

This seems crazy. He enrolled at USC knowing Caleb Williams was there for his first year. He seems like the heir apparent . . . or at least in line to earn that job next year.

Did USC not want to keep him (i.e., pay him)? USC's only qb right now is Miller Moss - who also could leave.

Rumor was he was 3rd stringer behind Moss so he probably wants to go somewhere with an easier path to start (also more money)

It will be interesting to see who pays "more money" for an unproven underclassmen. Cal did that with SMJ and he didn't prove he was up for the challenge. I'm sure this kid has potential, but I would like to believe that he has to prove himself at this level first before he can demand a larger NIL deal. But I guess some donor somewhere will throw money at him…..

What was expected to happen finally did on Monday afternoon. While the Georgia football news cycle was still booming with the Carson Beck news, the Bulldogs lost 5-star QB commitment Dylan Raiola to Nebraska.

The Cornhusker legacy made that flip after his official visit to Lincoln this weekend. That was the same weekend he had been planning to report to Athens and start going through early bowl workouts with the Bulldogs.

USC just brought in Will Howard as a transfer from Kansas State so they're definitely recruiting over their existing QB depth. And like someone else said if it's true that he was behind Miller Moss then he doesn't even have a line to the backup spot.

Because of the portal, teams that have millions in NIL funds to play with can always acquire a QB who is a proven college starter, rather than going into next season relying solely on QBs who haven't played or have played only sparingly.

Former five-star recruit (and the top-ranked recruit in the class of 2021) Korey Foreman is entering the transfer portal. Foreman was the crowned jewel of USC's 2021 recruiting class, but never really panned out as many had hoped.

The 6'4", 235-pound edge defender tallied 24 tackles, 4.5 tackles for a loss, 2.5 sacks and an interception. He appeared in 26 games over his three seasons at USC and only played in three games this season, his redshirt season. The talented pass rusher battled injuries for a sizable portion of his Trojan career.

The Georgia Bulldogs, 2023 season has come to a close as they have beaten the No. 5 Florida State Seminoles by final score of 63-3. With that being said, the Bulldogs have seen plenty of draft declarations come following that game, but the news today is a graduate running back, who has entered the transfer portal.

Running back, Sevaughn Clark has opted into the transfer portal with one year of eligibility remaining. The senior running back has seen limited, playing time with the Dawgs, not playing in a game since Kentucky, but got some carries against the Seminoles. Clark has totaled for 35 rushes and 145 yards with his time and Athens.
