Huh. I applaud the initiative to support Cal Football, but this seems pretty misguided if you ask me.

I may be alone here, but it would seem to me that FB ads directed at ACC football team pages would be more targeted than a billboard. But I'm not the one investing in this, so that is just an idea.

The real issue is the choice to put our absolute worst asset front and center on the billboard next to our best asset. I doubt anyone in the world is scared of Justin Wilcox's 21-37 conference record.

Perhaps the purpose is to scare them with Ott but relieve those fears with Wilcox?

Otherwise why would anyone put that man on a poster? He isn't even on a poster in BART or on University Ave. Why would he be on a poster in Charlotte?

You might be over-analyzing this. We made a good move to introduce ourselves to our new conference.

Wilcox looks good on a billboard. If he doesn't succeed on the field pretty soon, he'll be gone.
Wilcox looks like he came from Central Casting for a football coach.
that's really true! And this is branding and marketing not an analysis of his record, ability, or any of the other stuff....this was a smart, and sophisticated campaign, 2024 thinking....we have some smart ****ing alums from Cal!!! Makes me more proud to be associated...

Yeah, would you rather have Sonny Dykes' mug up there?

Thank you to SB and the other Bears that made this happen. These are people that are doing this on their time and on their dime while the people that are actually paid for this type of output put up roadblocks. Persisting in the face of such frustratingly intense laziness and stupidity would make my head explode. Thank you.

Wilcox looks good on a billboard. If he doesn't succeed on the field pretty soon, he'll be gone.

Could be. But I think someone needs to point out the other possibility - that the guys who put this up under-analyzed this.

Billboards should promote things you are proud of and/or want others to know about.

Dirty laundry is best hidden in a hamper, not hung up on the line for all our new neighbors to see.

Justin Wilcox is simply not a strong pitch for Cal football. Cal has a lot of tradition, 5 national championships, a bunch of NFL players, etc.. And Ott is a really, really good running back.

So why put Ott next to a coach who precisely no one fears?

How is that a good introduction to Cal football?
I think it's a bit silly to think that there's a huge audience of people who are somehow both unaware of Cal football, unaware of Cal entering the ACC, but somehow have a negative opinion of Wilcox as a coach which makes them then dislike the billboard.

This is targeted at building awareness of Cal in ACC country and showing that Cal has dedicated fans who want to take football seriously (as evidenced by the billboard's very existence) in the ACC.

Anyone who already had an opinion of Justin Wilcox as Cal's head coach isn't getting anything new from this billboard and isn't who it's trying to reach. It's, at worst, an inclusion which doesn't move the needle for the intended audience and at best will start to build some recognition for someone who will likely appear in football media during the season when Cal plays.

Only if you were TCU trying to troll Cal fans with a billboard on 80.

But if he were the Cal coach, sure, which is why I have no issue with Wilcox being on it even if I don't think he is a great coach. You can't leave Ott up there by himself and who else do you put up there?

The reality is, their National brand is stronger. You show up in a few Rose Bowls and big Bowl games in the last 20 years, and that tends to increase awareness...

The best part of this is that it shows the folks at tip of the spear and the Louisville crappy pizza fund that unlike them we have donors who donate irrespective of whether or not they are able to write off said donation.
To put that in context many of these schools are still running 501c3 collectives.
And accordingly their fans and alumni run around like they're these big swinging dicks. The reality is they aren't. What Kevin and everyone else has done is very admirable especially considering the fact that if they were FSU, etc alums they would get to write this off. As an aside I pray that loophole goes away soon.

A number of folks who are going out for the Auburn game who are staying in Atlanta have asked about the location of our Atlanta billboards. I gave it my best shot here but note this is way, way outside my wheelhouse and if you drive there and find yourself staring at an empty field instead of a billboard, you were warned.

See (some of you) in Atlanta!

Earlier in the thread, Sebastabear included photos of the two billboards, and I wrote a post here and here figuring out where the billboards were located in relation to businesses or landmarks. The relevant portion:

brevity said:

The billboard in the first picture, as I mentioned earlier, is above Motorvation Atlanta, next to Interstates 75/85 South. The billboard in the second picture is not far away, but in the opposite direction of Interstates 75/85 North, after Anderson's Olympic Torch and adjacent to The Standard at Atlanta.

These were appreciated by most GT fans I know, especially as two of our erstwhile "brothers" are suing to leave.

Looking forward to making a trip out there. Never been to Berkeley, though I was at a conference in San Jose some years ago.

Those billboards, assuming they are still up, are visible along I-75/85 through midtown adjacent GA Tech. The "torch" near one sign is located behind The Varsity restaurant on North Avenue, two blocks east of GT's Bobby Dodd Stadium across the interstate. The second appears to be a couple of exits north along the interstate.

Yes, sir. Very much still up. . Didn't realize how prominent these truly are. Not only are they massive, but they are located right on arguably the major highway going into downtown Atlanta. And triple bonus the traffic seems gridlocked on that thing 24/7 as far as I can tell. So you get lots and lots of opportunities to look at them. . Our group alone has probably seen it a dozen times just since we've been here. Snapped this yesterday

LOL, not arguably, certainly… I-75/85 is 12-14 lanes wide for most of that stretch. Great locations. No doubt mucho denaro to purchase those. Yes, it is mostly clogged 24/7 these days, though most I see are fiddling with their mobile phone.

Somehow I missed this project until today! I actually learned about it from some random non-Cal fan commenting in r/cfb that they see the billboard every time they drive into downtown Atlanta, and it always brings a smile to their face.

I kept an eye out for it while driving from Atlanta to the game and back last week (didn't exactly look up the location, though) and unfortunately didn't see the billboard. Told my wife about it and she was ready to take a photo! Very cool, though!

GT fans will love the billboard, though! At the ATL airport a GT fan saw me in Cal gear and walked over to welcome us to the ACC, and congratulate us on the win. He said it's always a good day when Auburn loses.

We got off the fan buses at the Atlanta hotel after the Auburn game, and a wedding party started chanting ACC at us and giving us high fives. Some guy in a tux said to me: I didn't even know you guys were in the ACC? The guy next to him responded: "haven't you seen the billboards all over the place".

This is just soooooo cool!! That noise you hear is me clapping.
