Reports are that Wilcox landed on the new OC and its former Boise State HC/OC and former Auburn HC Brian Harsin, thoughts? Hopefully they're saving Davis Webb for next HC

I just hope for some multiple sets on offense and the ability to run downhill successfully and not just to a wall of defenders.

My expectation is a meh/below average offene

The only way this gets better is with oline improvement.

Edit: my two cents is this is as good a hire as Wilcox, who needs to win more or likely is out, is getting, Harsin has a solid track record developing offensives and QBs. None of that works w/o a decent oline.

would he bring in new assistants? that had to be a part of the negotiations.

Anyone know what happened at Auburn? Seems like he had a decent amount of success at BSU, but then faceplanted at Auburn. Is it a matter of SEC competition catching up to him, or he had really good assistants at BSU that carried him (like we saw with Baldwin?)

From what Auburn and Boise State fans are saying, sounds like a D level human being and recruiter, and a B level OC (pretty good).

Frankly, I don't think Wilcox could've done much better. Who wants to work under Wilcox? It's been an OC career graveyard.

I don't know about a d level person, but he'd better be able to lead and manage O recruiters.

Once again Wilcox is assuming we can't and won't fire him and enriching his Idaho buddies at the expense of OUR UNIVERSITY and OUR MONEY!

Remind me again how a guy whose downfall at his last stop was "absent on the recruiting trail"; "worst recruiting classes in program history"; "treated current and former players like dogs"; "wife is a right wing conspiracy theorist"; etc. is a good fit for this program?

Sigh. We will be relegated and it is on your watch! Yes I said your watch. You're the ones with the big boy money.
F'ing do something about this.

I followed the situation casually years ago. Basically, he was set up to fail because he was hired under a backdrop of a AD/booster power struggle that continued under his tenure, but his personality just fanned the flames and made it implode spectacularly. They (by they, I mean literally everyone, including the fans) absolutely hate him over there.

This is classic JW -- safe, buddy hire to rekindle the past. No attempt at upside risk with the next Lanning or Dillingham. For his sake and ours, I hope it somehow works out.

Great, Wilcox hiring a guy with a reputation for being a way-below-average recruiter with an abrasive personality.

LOL. Tell me Cal isn't serious about power conference football without saying Cal isn't serious about power conference football. What a joke this program is.

This 100%. I think the fanbase cares more than the actual university. Mediocre football for 60 plus years and counting. A complete lack of support at the admin level. They give us the "we want to compete at a high level" speech but show no effort. This has to stop! If you cared Wilcox and Knowlton would've been gone a long time ago. They don't care and never will

He drove Bo Nix out of Auburn. Forget recruiting, it would be nice if he can even retain the talent we already have

It's simply astonishing that we would hire another multi-year unemployed flameout that nobody else wants with a bad recruiter + hard ass to his players reputation. I get that we won't fire Wilcox because we're cheap, but do we have to let him completely trash the program before we finally get him out at a price we're willing to pay? Why does he get free reign to make obvious mistake after obvious mistake? This hire is going to be a portal disaster. Anyone can see that. Our program, or what little is already left of it, may never recover. So disappointing and depressing.
Please give to Cal Legends at https://calegends.com/calegendsdonate/donate-football/ and encourage everyone you know who loves Cal sports to do it too.

To be in the Top 1% of all NIL collectives we only need around 10% of alumni to give $300 per year. Please help spread the word. "If we don't broaden this base we're dead." - Sebastabear

A Mark Fox hire in the Portal era. Another of his buddies from Idaho. Horrible fit for Berkeley. Wilcox is again showing he has no clue and knowingly or not is trashing the program on his way out. We may not survive this.

Can we just bring in Ron Rivera NOW?

We at least need Rivera or someone like him in a GM role to handle personnel issues (players and coaches). Desperately. Wilcox does as much or more damage in the offseason as he does with stupid decisions during games.

Harsin is a right-wing, Trump supporter and conspiracy theorist from Boise Idaho accused of racism by his players and was considered to the right of fans in Robert E Lee County Alabama. How is that a fit in Berkeley?

Besides, his offense requires a very good OL,. That ain't happening soon.

It's no good to ridicule via political opinion, but ok when you do it? Keep politics out of football opinions.

No, we need to fire Wilcox and hire Rivera. Now.
A GM is not going to be able to help a guy that was considered to be a right wing racist ******* by the standards of Robert E Lee County Alabama. This is a friend of Wilcox, he knows what he is. That he would think bringing him to Berkeley is a good idea just shows what a horrible coach he is.

His political views are correlated with his world view which affects his ability to be an effective coach somewhere other than Boise Idaho. He has lived in Idaho his entire life and does not relate well with African American players, or coaches. Read this article:

Bringing in someone like this is not fair to the players or the program. How do we get support within academics for athletics at a time of increased budget pressure when a guy like this is going to be paid more than the chancellor much less the professors?

I wonder what checks and balances are in place when it comes to the hiring process for football? I honestly could not care less about Bryan Harsin's politics, but I care deeply about Cal hiring coaches with a reputation for being terrible recruiters or running players off the team.

Look at it this way, if he is indeed a poor leader or a tyrant who is going to antagonize players to the point that many will revolt and leave, this will only raise the chances of Wilcox being replaced.

Lyons might not fire JW for going 7-6, however severe personnel issues would give him just cause, and perhaps even some leverage over his buyout.

We can't afford that now. We will be dead for sure (assuming we aren't already). Our only hope is to do the best we can until we get rid of Wilcox, then hire someone good to match with decent to good players. If we lose all those players and have to start over again completely from scratch we won't have time.

Gotta play at least Devil's Advocate with most of you: Harsin's done some good things in his career; maybe he'll be really good for us.

Do I really believe that? No because I don't know him well enough to have an opinion, one way or the other, but some people are searching out the negatives and ignoring the positives.
