So the 9ers have issues with Purdy's signing, and are mentioning veteran pro bowler...Falcons backup Kirk Cousins as a replacement?!?

49ers could hit 'impasse' with Brock Purdy, replace him with $180M ex-Pro Bowler
This is all speculation and click bait. They already said they want him back and are negotiating a deal. Of course he wants as much as he can get and they want to pay him as little as possible. If this was leaked by the team it is just to put pressure on. There is no way Cousins is getting the keys to the 49ers. He is pretty much done. Purdy is the best of a bunch of mediocre QBs that the 49ers have had in the past 20 years.
If that's the attitude, then they already lost. That is so much more prevalent in other sports than the NFL, and the hard salary cap. You pay the QB's that are good, and work hard at figuring out the salary cap around that. Clearly why the Eagles are the World Champions, by doing exactly that....and as an Eagles fan who was most worried about the Niners going into the season, then yes, please mess up the Purdy negotiations....
I think the biggest question is precisely how good Purdy is. If the 49ers think he is truly franchise level and has proven that beyond a doubt, then he's going to be looking at something in the 50MM+ per year range (that's roughly top 10 in the QB world).

Personally, I think this past season had to at least make the 49ers ask themselves if he is at that elite level that makes everyone around him better as well.

Middle range salaries (say #15-18) include names like Stafford, Rodgers, Carr and Mayfield. That puts him in the 35-40MM range.

If he and his agent are really looking for something that is close to market setting, I would be surprised if the 49ers would do a long term deal in the 55MM+ range - like a 5 year, 275MM with, say 180MM guaranteed.

I think something in the 40MM+ range (maybe 170MM, 4 years, 130MM guaranteed) seems pretty fair. Its not a great QB year, both in the draft or in free agency - so that probably bodes well for a proven commodity like Purdy. But me personally, I don't see him as a market setting QB, yet.
I bet 50 million per year for 6 years average with huge signing bonus and 150 million guaranteed. Something like a 75 million signing bonus and then 25 million per year increasing by 5 million per year over the course of the contract.

If the 49ers believe he is their guy, I could totally see them paying him north of 50MM to be right in the thick of what top 10 QBs make. Its just my personal opinion that he hasn't shown he is at that elite level (doesn't mean he can't win a lot of games with the right guys around him as evidenced by his overall record) - but as others have said, there aren't a lot of great options out there and he certainly has shown he is very capable.

The 49ers may be one of the luckiest franchises out there from a QB standpoint. We see franchise after franchise mortgaging a future to move up and then NOT get the right guy and then they're hamstrung for multiple seasons after that. The 49ers traded up to draft Trey Lance who has been a bust so far and cost the 49ers multiple high draft picks ... then they fall into Purdy.

Failing so hard with the guy you actively traded up to get and randomly striking gold with the last pick is exactly why you don't let go of a proven NFL starter like Purdy. They'll pay him whatever they need to.

Purdy has a low ceiling, he is not a championship caliber QB, like all the other 49er QBs this century. The few times they've had really good teams, they were held back by lackluster QB play.

I agree. Its just a question of how much is "whatever they need to".

I am definitely not in the "low ceiling, low upside, average game manager" type narrative of some of his detractors - but that's just my opinion.

I don't think he deserves a market setting contract (ie, 60MM+/year), but realistically, someone will certainly pay him 35-40MM/year, which puts him into the capable starting QB range.

I'm actually not even a 49er fan at all - they are one of my two "always want them to lose" franchises alongside the Patriots. But I can appreciate what Purdy has shown and believe he is in the upper half of NFL starting QBs.

"Low ceiling" doesn't seem to make sense given his 2023, when he was basically the top statistical QB. Yes, that's with a lot of help around him but does seem to suggest the ceiling is not low.

Eagles wrote Hurts a contract that will be quite restrictive in the future. His cap hit for 2024 was something like 14 million, so they will get hit with the difference in the future. They have 1-2 more years in their window.

49ers can do the same type of deal too, but they seem to want to not mortgage their future as much. That's the big choice in the NFL - if you don't 'borrow' from the future and other teams are, it's hard to get over the top. The 49ers are kind of in a no man's land this year with Samuel and Aiyuk issues - they will likely have to cut Samuel and take a big cap hit, and Aiyuk is coming back from a major knee injury that could cost a lot of the season. Wonder what would happen if they just said Purdy is asking for too much, bring in a 1-2 year backup and franchise tag him. Overpaying is almost as detrimental as losing a player.

Rodgers playing for the 49ers short term at a non top tier salary would not be the worst thing ever.

Hurts cap hit goes up by just over 8 million for 2025. If Philly fans have to live with a down year or two for the Eagles, sure! But that also means ignoring the skill in which Howie Roseman has worked the cap: plenty of "panic" articles about the Eagles and the cap going into 2024, he is playing around with the Jason Kelce/Fletcher Cox dead money, and then they will have Brandon Graham off the books. Wasn't the Carson Wentz disaster supposed to sink the Eagles for years to come?
I will also take my chances on "the window" with a defense that started 2 rookies, had a 2nd year player as probably their best defensive player, and had a 3rd rookie contributing consistently in the 2nd half of the Super Bowl.
All of this is a lot easier to "worry about" when the words "defending champions" are in front of the team name...

Ps: don't doubt the number of Eagles haters on this board, so yeah, expect any and all hate...
