Before I went and saw it with my own eyeballs, I had no idea it went about 170 degrees around the stadium. Big is an understatement.

The think is almost goalpost to goalpost.

Thinking that we will still be 9th in terms of space per athlete makes me wonder WTF these other schools are doing... Whoa.

I would think that this statistic is misleading and could probably be calculated different ways;for example, crew has their own facility which is probably not calculated. I would guess the worse the rating, in terms of space, the more leverage Cal had to build the facility. I bet sports like volleyball, baseball,m&w tennis, m&w basketball and m&w soccer will rarely use the SAHPC, instead using the improved weight facility at Haas.

Anyone know about the complete construction schedule. Not only this season, but after.
Will the stadium be closed after the season. If so, for how long...etc?

Mitties, I waited for someone to answer you, but it is apparent no one knows the answer or people haven't seen your post. If you do a search in this thread and others in the SAHPC forum, you likely would find your answer. I didn't check, because I thought it would easier to find info on the official building website. However, they're as pathetic as Tedford in keeping up with the Jones's on the internet. January 8th was their last article.

I don't know the exact details of schedule, but I believe I read from several sources, especially JO and MB that the stadium will be closed for only the 2011 season when our Bears will likely play in Candlestick . I'd prefer Oakland with its ease of access with BART, but I think the A's won't allow a 2nd football team to trash their field.

Jankoski, Thanks for your reply. Yeah I hunted around, but didn't get the info. that you posted. So it's closed the 2011 season. I was thinking it might be next year, but knowing how slow these projects have been going Cal will probably be lucky it's 2011, and not 2012.

To me this project has been kind of backwards. The retrofit should have been first and foremost due to life safety. All other amenities (alterations, additions and Separate Structures) should have come after.
Great that the ball is rollin though.
Thanks again for your reply.

What would be the chances of a major earthquake hitting during a packed house? That only happens in the movies, but I'm sure a few present atheist would change their minds.

I believe the AD is actively negotiating for an alternative site, and there aren't any signs that the City is willing to block the retrofit and other improvements. That means the Pandas are on their own, and I doubt they fork over the cash to block "public safety". Basically, the fight was won and decided when the tree fell, but one never knows with our legal system...

Actually that issue has come up with some other buildings in the Bay area.
The De young is a good one. Rather than retrofit, a new building was built.
Insurance basically stepped in and ended the debate between the new versus retrofit/restore, saying they wouldn't insure any shows, and ultimately forcing the museum to close.

Stadium is a little different, but Tedford shouldn't be sleep there during the season. Maybe the insurance company could force him to go home for the night.

You are not the only person who feels this way. There was some discussion of moving the football team out of the stadium. The team felt that it had special needs (training facilities, medical, meeting rooms) that could not easily be accommodated by standard "surge space" that is used to relocate office workers during seismic retrofits.

It appears that the current plan is to rely upon the recently-completed retrofits at the stadium (as described here http://bearinsider.com/news/story.php?article=517 and discussed here http://bearinsider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=14737) to protect lives until the SAHPC is ready for the team to occupy.

SAPHPC is supposed to be a major feature of the seismic retrofit on the west wall. No?

SAHPC is not only structurally separate from the stadium, but the seismic retrofit of the stadium is a separate phase of the project to improve the stadium and associated athletic facilities.

Might I remind you that the 89 Loma Prieta quake hit during an A's - Giants WORLD SERIES game.

To add to the X-mas cheer, there are new pics of the SAHPC Center from the beginning of December till the 14th... The pictures start at the south end and proceed to the middle at picture 32 and end on the north end. You can see they prepared the site for the deluge of this weekend, and there is serious progress occurring with the foundation. Pics in the 40s show huge square rebars for the foundation. Moving on up!

If you thought those pics were awesome, you should see the site, today. I checked out the work from the rim of Memorial, and there were a lot of different crews going to town on different projects: rebar placement for the foundation, plumbing, more dirt removal near the ramp. The rebar is almost completely covering the entire area of the Big Hole and about 25% of the rebar has been covered with cement. It looks like the foundation will be nearly complete before New Years weather permitting.

I hope the band forms up at Sproul, marches to the patio, has the "concert" there, and then all the fans who like that stuff, AND the band can woop it up for TMTV when this is finished.

That would be awesome (but the band and fans would have to sit at the stadium for hours waiting for the game).

Nice pictures.
But it's pretty clear that the rock anchors go under the existing Stadium. So I'd say there is no way that these are separate structures and independent. Good thing for lawyers....because if I was the judge I'd have said they are not separate.

You're right about going under. I witnessed the the long rods being thrust into the ground, but did they make contact with the foundation of the Stadium? I'm no engineer, but I'd think that would be bad for the integrity of the Stadium. Therefore, I believe they would go under the foundation, and there's still not contact between the two structures. Can any expert clear up this difference in opinion?
DrDanger

...the stadium foundation. They are separate structures. The soldier piles (I Beams) support the soil nail retention wall that has tie back rods. But those rods are way below the foundations of the stadium. That soil nail wall is what is now being waterproofed with a sheet membrane, prior to the vertical building walls (which will be 24' thick) being poured up against that.

The job is right on schedule.

As promised here are some new pics of the SAHPC from earlier today. The site wasn't as busy as it was before the big storm. The pictures start on the south side of the project and proceeds to the north side.

Several things to notice in this set:

(1) The foundation is mostly complete except for a small area with yellow tarps. It appears there's been a delay in completing it and installing electric wires due to the latest deluge of the past 2 weeks.

(2) They're beginning to pour inner walls and support columns.

(3) 2 workers were drilling grooves into the foundation slabs that you can see as squares in several pictures. Perhaps, this measure is for drainage???

also good you aren't an architect or engineer, because you don't know jack about the building codes.:axe

apparently you do know enough about being a fan to be on this board, so kudus to you for that.........

There's better pics from the Construction Insider via Calfan's OP. I'm a little surprised that the walls of the SAHPC against Memorial Stadium haven't been poured, yet, while they're preparing the 2nd floor pour on the far south-side (photo 102).
