I'm also not in the industry, but the cranes for the SAHPC were also inside the structure, so there isn't a problem with building around it and filling the hole later. What is odd to me, is that they have had a rather tall green machine on site for sometime for driving deep support beams into the ground, but it doesn't appear they've used it at all. But, I'm guessing the new concrete is to support Memorial's outer walls, then this machine can rattle the soil with its pounding.

If I remember correctly, there are going to be four large stationary cranes, built by one mobile crane.

Thanks for sharing, but that has to be about 2 months ago. The 4 cranes make an amazing site right now. I swear our Bears were cursed by the presence of those 2 red cranes lurking over head. I don't have the time to post them, but I took a few pics from Piedmont the other day. I'll try and do that during the weekend.

As for the date of the photo, based on the archives at www.calbears.com/stadiumcam, it almost certainly isn't any older than March 9 at 7:00 PM. The last of the seating structure adjacent to the North Tunnel was still standing near sunset on March 9. The first image to show the area devoid of that concrete structure is March 9 at 18:45 (6:45 PM). There's also heavy equipment clearly in the shot. No such heavy equipment is in the photo taken from the South End Zone area.

Based on other distinguishing features and the archives, it's a certainty that the photo could not have been taken later than the evening of March 14. On March 15, the orange fencing and some of the sections visible on the left side of the photo have been removed and demolished, respectively. So, there's a 5-day period in which the photo could have been taken.

Its two years old, SHAPC is almost done and we are now into CMS building. How about a fresh start?

It's dated May 18, 2011. I would imagine that much progress has been made since May 18.

What's the plan when the facility is complete. You have to allow folks to see it. You don't add major facilities like this that often!

I would pay to have a tour. Not much.

The exterior mockup has been completed for the concrete repair and mineral staining of the historic wall. There are roughly two bays, full height, painted an off-white color near the north tunnel. The mineral stain looks good and provides a uniform appearance but can still be read as stone, which was the original intent and the reason behind the use of board forms and a pebble or dash coat. UC decided on the mineral stain over replicating the now obsolete dash coat due to maintenance reasons. Original dash coat can still be seen on other campus buildings, namely LeConte Hall, built in the same year and designed by the same campus architect (JGH) at that time.

Thats the description per specs, sorry no pictures, but maybe someone will take and post a few.

Question: On my visit up to the Bay Area for the USC game, I stopped by the stadium to see the construction progress (which was very cool). At the vista point, there are a couple of exemplars of the new seat-backs for the high rollers - a plastic, ballpark-style version and a plush cushioned version. As far the the cushioned version goes, the exemplar was looking a little weather-worn. So my question is, what will be the methods of protecting these cushioned chairs from the elements once the renovations are complete?

From the Construction Update;<br /><br />1. The exterior bracing is now fully removed.<br /><br />2. They will begin installing the treads and risers that go under the bench seats on Dec. 20.<br /><br />3. The last tower crane has been removed.<br /><br />I think they should paint some stripes on the ground and toss some passes.<br /><br />Its looking more and more like a stadium.

I was home in July and got to see the progress from the "Vista Point" on the East side, but I was amazed at how much progress there has been since then on my visit from Philly yesterday! The press box and club levels look like they are going to be really sweet! (I have memories of the old junky press box when doing game on KALX back in the 70s!) And with the big openings for new video screens, cannot wait to see what those look like!<br /> <br />And the SAHPC? Though I could not go inside, looking through the upper window down into the <b>massive</b> weight room facility... holy moly!!! I thought it interesting to hear recruits saying that Cal's facilities were the best they had seen - guys who'd seen Oregon, $C, Texas and many of the usual suspects. But now I see why! Does anyone know what the deal is with the crooked stairs leading up to the top of the bowl behind both endzones? There must be a reason for it, but it looks quite strange.

My guess is that they are temporary construction stairs that cannot have that long of a run without some secondary retention (such as a cable to tie into)...

Those are not stairs. Those are concrete ledgers for the precast risers to be placed on.

The "crooked stairs" are the risers as described earlier. The reasoning behind the "crooked stairs" is that between each section of these risers is a large foam section that provides movement for the section of the stadium that lies on the Hayward fault. So now that the new treads and risers are being installed on the west side, you can see a stark difference between the color of the shiny new west side concrete and the old east side concrete. I know the east side is not part of this renovation, but is there any plan to at least sandblast or spruce up the concrete on the east side before they install the steel bleachers? I'm hoping they can do some superficial work to make it least appear in tune with the rest of the stadium.

I see your point, but once all of the benches are installed how much of the concrete will really be visable?

My question is something that I have not been able to find on a Cal website, google, & Sandy didn't respond to my tweet either. Q: Has there been a final decision on the turf? Natural Grass or Field Turf? I really hope it is real grass.

Easy question. Field turf.
The stadium doubles as a practice facility, due to space limitations. Natural grass would not hold up for everyday practice and then be game-ready on Saturdays.
