Congrats to the Braves!

They had as many injuries as anyone but beat some really good teams to win it all!

I still think the Dodgers would have prevailed if not for Roberts being a moron and using his starters in relief when he had one of the best bullpens in the majors.

Some of us thought them Brewers were the team to beat after SF and LA exhausted each other in the stretch run. Atlanta was an afterthought…

LA and SF played a killer NLDS, leaving the winner regardless of who it would have in a weakened state moving forward. Atlanta took full advantage of their opportunity taking down LA and, subsequently, Houston.
I thought the Brewers were the team to beat in the NL until the Williams injury, although even then, it's baseball and anything can happen. The Williams injury definitely made the Brewers a weaker team, the ripple effect through the pen matters. Although Williams was the 8th inning guy, Adrian Houser isn't pitching the 5th inning of NLDS game 3 if Williams is healthy. If Williams is pitching the 8th inning in NLDS game 4 instead of Hader, game 4 may have gone differently.

Meanwhile, the Braves quietly got their top three starters going, as well the setup guys in the pen. Although the Giants took 2 of 3 from the Braves in mid-September in SF, the 3-0 shutout started by Fried with the Rosario cycle were signs of where the Braves were. By the time Rosario was healthy, they had more than made up for the loss of Ozuna and Acuna. Nobody was paying attention to the fact that the Braves improved themselves more than anybody with mid-season trades, and if they could get by the Brewers, were a good bet to knock off either the Giants or Dodgers.

After the Williams injury, I thought the Braves had a very slight edge over the Brewers, with either one still having a slight edge over the Giants or Dodgers (with the NLCS favorite in part depending on how much the NLDS took out of each of the winners).

One can quibble about what Roberts did with the starting pitchers in the post-season, but the Dodgers starting pitching was starting to look worn out before the post-season. You posted back on September 26:

"Pitchers who have thrown 170+ innings in the NL…

LA has 3
Phil has 2

No other team has more than one."

Maybe it was more what Roberts did with his starters in the regular season than it was the post-season.

The worm started to turn for Dodgers starting pitching on Sunday of Labor Day weekend. With the Giants and Dodgers tied, the Dodgers had Buehler starting and the Giants had a bullpen game. Who thought the Giants were going to win that game? Buehler stank up the joint, the first sign of the Dodgers starting pitching getting worn down. Scherzer being lousy in his last two regular season starts wasn't a good sign, either.

When the Dodgers had to fight until the last day of the regular season but didn't take the division, it only exacerbated things because they had to use Scherzer in the Wild Card game. He gave up only a run, but the fatigue was showing, which is why Roberts pulled him early. He might have had a bad looking line in game 3 of the NLDS except the wind kept all balls in the park except for Longoria's shot off Scherzer.

By late September, it was clear that in order to have a strong shot at the pennant, the Dodgers needed to win the division, avoid the Wild Card game, and get home field in the NLDS and the NLCS. They didn't. Then they got further broken when they had to first win the Wild Card game and then use everything they had to win the NLDS.

If the Giants had been as predicted before the season and won 75 games or so, the Dodgers may well have won the World Series. But that wasn't the hand the Dodgers were dealt, and by the time the NLDS was done, they were too broken to beat a quality Braves team.
Well said. It will be interesting to see how Roberts manages his starters next year.

Note: SF had the #1 bullpen ERA in the game. That was the secret sauce to 107 wins….

I wouldn't leave the SF bullpen out of the discussion for potential change. By the end of the LA series, it sure seemed that Kapler really only trusted Rogers and Doval. Everyone else looked pretty shaky. They were really dependable during the regular season, though.

They already let Reyes Moronta go. Although he was injured all year, I thought he was going to be the future closer a couple of years ago.

Moronta - I also thought he was a future closer. Unfortunately, he never came back from the injury to his arm.

Posey was a stud from the start and going out on a high note is fitting given his impressive career. Always wished he were a Dodger.

Yeah, he looked like an experienced veteran hitter even as a rookie. Not many guys like that.

In some respects, it is more significant that he looked like an experienced veteran catcher even as a rookie. Not many guys like that. If Posey isn't like both an experienced veteran hitter and an experienced veteran catcher as a rookie, the Giants don't win the 2010 World Series.

Vogelsong told an interesting story from 2014. Buster was dealing with various aches and pains, including a hamstring, and when it was time to warm up for a game against the Twins at home. Buster apologized to Vogey and told him that he didn't have time to do his normal study of the hitters, he didn't have a report to give Vogey as he normally would. Vogey told him he had studied the hitters, and gave Buster a quick recap of the 8 position players in the Twins starting lineup. Buster absorbed it all, and Vogey didn't have to shake him off once during the game. Vogey threw 6.2 innings of shutout ball.

Kershaw personally knew mostly of Posey's skills as a hitter, but said that the Dodgers hitters would talk about how Posey's pitch calls always kept them off balance. Posey made it very hard to guess what was coming.

I'm happy Posey is going out on his own terms, selfishly wish he'd gone one or two more years, but happy for him and glad he remained a Giant for his whole career.

More from Kershaw…

I hope Kershaw also retires from the only team for whom he has played, whether it is today, tomorrow or whenever in the future. Adding his name to the list of true Dodgers would be a real plus for him and the organization….

Can't say enough good things about Buster. I don't know what the Giants will look like without him but we were extremely fortunate to have him for a decade. It will be really interesting to see how much of his magic is left on the team. I think his career also shows you just how punishing and physically and mentally demanding the catcher position is. If he had been a 3B, he would probably have lead the league in hitting a few times, hit for more power and his offensive stats would have garnered him a lot more recognition on sports center, etc. But he would have been less valuable and may not have any rings to show for it.

Buster Posey, who retired Thursday, is one of just two players in MLB history to win MVP, Rookie of the Year and three World Series. Axios

His first year, he struggled quite a bit in limited at bats and looked overmatched. He was much better when he was called up for good at the end of the following May.
Right, I'm not really counting the 17 AB cup of coffee he had in 2009, more his "true" rookie year in 2010.

Gavin Lux is the number two prospect in ALL OF BASEBALL, you moron.

LOL. Bro, chill. Hungover or something?

I know Lux is the number 2 prospect. Actually, he was. He graduated out of most prospect lists this year. He's not on MLB's list or FanGraphs' list for that reason.

Lots of top prospects fail though, and Lux has so far been pretty dang bad in about a full season's worth of at bats over two seasons. What does that mean? Hard to know, but calling him MVP caliber right now is pretty laughable.

As for Seager, I suspect he will not return after next year (unless Lux continues to struggle). He'll be 28 and looking for a big deal. Do the Dodgers want to pay him a lot of money for a lot of years for what is typically declining performance at that age for a middle infielder? I don't know (especially if Lux is MVP caliber, as you wildly suggest).

Well, look at that.

The over bet for 2022 isn't decided yet. Things can always go unexpectedly sour, see e.g., the Pads last year (or the 2016 Giants). Given the Giants model and the manager (in contrast, to, say, the 2021 Pads), it doesn't seem likely.

In my mind the biggest danger is the starting pitching falling apart. Multiple bullpen games will only work so long, and it will be tougher come May 2 when the number of pitchers is limited to 13. Having too many starting pitchers injured or faltering could cause things to spiral down, and the Giants have two hurt right now. Rodon doesn't have a great track record of health. Is Webb a shooting star who was really good for three months but will come back to earth?

But still, the 2022 overs was a really good bet. Not as good as last year -- you had to be crazy if you thought 107 wins was a realistic possibility, but beating 75.5 or whatever line you might have gotten for 2021? Sure, it could have gone wrong, but that was as close to a lock as you can find in sports betting. Even with an number closer to 85, the over for 2022 was a really good bet, just not as easy money as 2021. A friend asked me if he should bet the over this year, and I said certainly he should, but I have also told him not to put the money in the bank yet.

Thanks for that update.

It makes for a lot more thinking about the pitcher vs position player balance in May, with the overall roster limit coming down to 26 but the pitcher limit at 14 instead of 13. The Giants have been planning for a 13-13 balance, but with the option to go 14-12, what will they do? It may depend on overall health, but it does present interesting choices.

First half of the season is over. I'm a bit surprised the Dodgers have a 8 game lead. Kershaw added to the Allstar game. What are the chances he starts the game in LA? Based solely on this season, I would say no; however if you take into account his 15 year career - Yes
