I think Rock's right for cultural reasons. The TV demographics for baseball watchers skew older white male compared to football and the NBA. African Americans watch the NBA and NFL in that order. Kids grow up dreaming of LeBron and Marshawn not Andrew McCutchen. Black kids no longer grow up watching or playing the game.

This is the big thing. It's not an issue of baseball teams being "racist" exactly -- a player like Pablo Sandoval (for example) is just as "black" as Barry Bonds -- it's more that black Americans aren't following the game anymore.

I'm not sure if trying to make the game more "modern" is the answer either. That would make it seem like MLB is just trying to intrude upon the NBA's territory, and it would probably just look desperate. Actually, the thing that might save baseball among African Americans (and youth culture in general) is the concussion issue in the NFL. Kids might start to pick it up more because it's a safer sport.

But I believe the point is still the same. Link from the Boston Globe: Just one of the 50 players participating in the 2013 World Series identifies himself as African-American.
