Well done, LA Public Library. San Diego is still in third place in the division. Why all the excitement?
To perhaps make this thread momentarily relevant to Cal, Cal fans well know that, in part because of no outright conference championships in over 60 years, we will be even more excited by the good things that happen than we would otherwise.
Beating USC in 2018 was pretty great. I'm sure there plenty of SC fans who said, "Why all the excitement, you're still 3-4 in conference." The loss to Cal meant SC went from 4-2 to 4-3, and they were soon to finish 4-5, the same as Cal. Is it really exciting for a team soon to finish 4-5 to beat another team soon to finish 4-5? YES, especially when it is SC.
Beating Stanford in 2019 was pretty great. I'm sure there were plenty of Stanford fans who said, "Why all the excitement, you're still 4-5 in conference? You just beat a team that would have been 4-5 with a victory and with the loss finished 3-6 in conference. Big deal!!" Yeah, it was really sweet, and REALLY worth getting excited about. The 9 year losing streak made it that much more worth the excitement.
Cal basketball has taken down number one teams on a few occasions. And we get excited, in spite of the fact that we're nowhere near the top of just conference when we do it. Why all the excitement? Because that's what we're fans for!!
If we don't get excited about that stuff, when are we going to get excited? If I stop being excited by that stuff, well, then, what's the point? What's the point if I'm never having fun except when we're in first place, or when we win a conference championship? If I get that way, it is time to quit being a fan, life is too short to spend time on activities that will almost never get me excited.
If you're a Padres or Giants fan who doesn't get excited about a sweep of the Dodgers, even if the Giants or Padres are in 5th place and the Dodgers are in 4th, you are a loser of a fan, you don't get enough enjoyment out of it and it is time to quit. Such a sweep is worth excitement, period. And boy, if the Padres don't get excited about a sweep of the Dodgers, when will they get to be excited?
If you don't understand the excitement, then you definitely shouldn't be a Cal fan, spend your time on other things that will make you happier. It is generally an unhappy person who feels the need to tell others that they should be less happy. And clearly, the LA Public LIbrary is NOT happy today.
