At least they've still got a sense of humor. After starting the season red hot with an 18-22 record the Diamondbacks now find themselves mired in a 2-28 freefall that includes their current 0-14 "slide." They finish the first half against the Dodgers, Brewers, @ Padres, @ Cardinals, Giants, Rockies, @ Dodgers. Better "get well" in that Rockies series to bank some extra wins.

2-28?! I thought the 23 straight road losses was bad. Holy moly. 2-28 seems impossible.
Yeah it's brutal. That was my quick count including today, but check my math. That's why I'm wondering if they get to 40. Over under on wins before the break has to be 2 or 3 max given the opponents and the cliff they've fallen off.

"Wild Ohtani stat to go ... Only eight of 142 qualified hitters have an OPS over .950, and only 23 of 121 pitchers with at least 10 starts have an ERA under 2.90. Shohei has both." Axios

The average exit speed of an MLB home run is between 103-104 MPH. When I was watching him the other night against the A's he jacked one out at 115 MPH. He scary.

The Giants are feasting on an incredibly favorable schedule, as they should. So far they've played an astonishing number of their games against teams below .500 (35 out of 54, or 65%). Against .500 or better teams they're a below .500 team. Against the only team they've played with a better than .600 record (Padres) they're a .400 team (although an admittedly small sample size). Contrast this to the Padres who entering today find themselves a half game behind the Giants despite playing only 22 of 55 games (40%) against teams below .500. They're a winning team (.545) against .500 or better teams, and a .600 team head-to-head against the Giants. Setting aside common opponents the Giants have played the Marlins, Phillies, Reds, and now Angels (sans Trout) whereas the Padres have played the Brewers, Cardinals, Astros, and now Cubs. This is great news for Giants fans, as this was essentially the blueprint for their World Series winning years. It remains to be seen whether they can get hot again in the postseason and make a run, but the easy schedule should at least give them the chance.

3 weeks later...

vs. .500+ teams:

Giants: 19-13
Dodgers: 18-21
Padres: 26-23

LOL.

LOL indeed. You sure have an interesting way of showing just how "not upset" you were by that post of mine.

So what you're saying is that the Padres have played 17 more games against .500 or better teams and have a slightly worse winning percentage against them? You find this persuasive?

Nothing has really changed in those 3 weeks, except (as I predicted) the Giants' increased lead over the Padres. The Giants' schedule sure hasn't gotten any harder. They won 3 of 4 games against the Cubs, the only winning team they played, after golfing while the Cubs played the Padres and flew to SF. But you already gloated about that in another post. So how did their record against .500 teams suddenly get so much better? Answer: When I posted that the Reds were 24-29 (.453). They are now 35-35. Exactly .500. The Giants are 6-1 against the Reds. Incidentally, the Reds were 35-31 (.530) a few days ago. What happened since then? The Padres swept them in the only 4 games between the two teams so far. Put another way: almost 25% of the Giants' games against .500 or better teams are against the Reds. Under 10% of the Padres' .500 or better games are against the Reds. The Giants still have not played even back-to-back series of any kind against .500 or better teams. As I outlined above, the Padres recently played back-to-back-to-back road series against the Brewers, Astros, and Cubs. They started that stretch 4-2 but lost the last 4 to finish 4-6. It's almost as if consistently playing quality teams on the road is hard or something crazy like that. The Giants meanwhile just went on the road and struggled against the Rangers and Nationals, managing an overall 3-3 split. Their reward? A four game home sweep over the hapless Diamondbacks.

So I guess if you want to hang your hat on the Reds managing to climb literally to .500 to add those games they'd already played against the Giants and use that as an opportunity to say "gotcha" that's your prerogative. They are technically a .500 team, at least today. I'm not really surprised, it fits your MO when it comes to the Giants perfectly. Meanwhile if you're counting (and I know you are) the Padres still haven't had an off day that didn't involve flying from SD to NYC since May 20. The Giants will enjoy yet another off day today to travel all the way down to LA (and another to come back on Thursday!) while the Padres keep playing, against the Dodgers (a .500+ team). Maybe they need it because they're driving instead of flying, I dunno. But the Angels aren't playing today either so...

Like I said, it's an easy schedule.

I'm not jumping on the Diamondbacks bandwagon until they win another road game.

Of course, when the bandwagon is, "this is a 100 loss team, not a 120 loss team," it isn't necessarily worth jumping on. However, until more people hop off the "this is a 120 loss team" bandwagon, the Diamondbacks may be a good betting value for a little while.

I don't love the Padres. Perhaps it is nice that they sweep the Dodgers, but I'm not sure sure they aren't the bigger threat to the Giants this season, especially with the foreign substances crackdown that may hurt the Dodgers more than a lot of other teams. The Dodgers are winless since the crackdown began. Hmmmm. . . .

I don't love the Padres either. Machado is a little btch, but a good hitter.
And they are absolutely the bigger threat this year.

To perhaps make this thread momentarily relevant to Cal, Cal fans well know that, in part because of no outright conference championships in over 60 years, we will be even more excited by the good things that happen than we would otherwise.

Beating USC in 2018 was pretty great. I'm sure there plenty of SC fans who said, "Why all the excitement, you're still 3-4 in conference." The loss to Cal meant SC went from 4-2 to 4-3, and they were soon to finish 4-5, the same as Cal. Is it really exciting for a team soon to finish 4-5 to beat another team soon to finish 4-5? YES, especially when it is SC.

Beating Stanford in 2019 was pretty great. I'm sure there were plenty of Stanford fans who said, "Why all the excitement, you're still 4-5 in conference? You just beat a team that would have been 4-5 with a victory and with the loss finished 3-6 in conference. Big deal!!" Yeah, it was really sweet, and REALLY worth getting excited about. The 9 year losing streak made it that much more worth the excitement.

Cal basketball has taken down number one teams on a few occasions. And we get excited, in spite of the fact that we're nowhere near the top of just conference when we do it. Why all the excitement? Because that's what we're fans for!!

If we don't get excited about that stuff, when are we going to get excited? If I stop being excited by that stuff, well, then, what's the point? What's the point if I'm never having fun except when we're in first place, or when we win a conference championship? If I get that way, it is time to quit being a fan, life is too short to spend time on activities that will almost never get me excited.

If you're a Padres or Giants fan who doesn't get excited about a sweep of the Dodgers, even if the Giants or Padres are in 5th place and the Dodgers are in 4th, you are a loser of a fan, you don't get enough enjoyment out of it and it is time to quit. Such a sweep is worth excitement, period. And boy, if the Padres don't get excited about a sweep of the Dodgers, when will they get to be excited?

If you don't understand the excitement, then you definitely shouldn't be a Cal fan, spend your time on other things that will make you happier. It is generally an unhappy person who feels the need to tell others that they should be less happy. And clearly, the LA Public LIbrary is NOT happy today.

Sweeping a series when you play six of them a season v. an opponent within your division is a lot different than winning the one game you play v. your opponent each year.

Besides the Giants sweeping LA is not a big deal. It has certainly happened often enough over the years. Now, sweeping Detroit in the 2014 World Series - yeah, that was a big deal.

You can argue that the Giants sweeping the Dodgers is not a "big deal" But if we aren't excited about it, then we are not capable of living in the moment and getting excited about the good things in front of us. If we don't do that, then again, what's the point?

If we're only living for the "big deal" moments, then the amount of time we're excited will be extremely limited. If being a sports fan gets excitement only when there is a "big deal," then all of us Cal fans are wasting too much time.

Yep. It has been a fun ride so far this year. The ups and downs of a 162 season includes sweeps (both pro and con), winning streaks, losing streaks, hard losses and surprising wins. In my opinion, even keel throughout is the best way to enjoy the games.

Where was he? I thought he has been with the team all year.

Man, who doesn't love the Padres.
Hmmmm. . . .

5 and 0 since this post, including a 2-game sweep of the Giants. I think they will be okay.

Padres have won 9 of 10 and are still in 3rd.

NL West is amazing this season!
