First half of the season is over. I'm a bit surprised the Dodgers have a 8 game lead. Kershaw added to the Allstar game. What are the chances he starts the game in LA? Based solely on this season, I would say no; however if you take into account his 15 year career - Yes

Well Vogelsong has been out of baseball for a long time and last night Kershaw is perfect through 7. Snitker should hav given him the start.

Honestly, this is a little sad.

So, for 3 months he has a 120 OPS+. That's good! Solid! Not an all star but ya know, everyone wants a guy like that on their team.

So let's see what you said about Lux, that caused me to make fun of his very bad OPS+ two years ago:

Quote:

potential to be MVP caliber.

120 for 3 months is not it, man

But let's see my response that has you so angry two years later:

Quote:

And Rios and Lux are MVP candidates?! Lol. What a homer. Even Smith is a big stretch. All Star, yes. MVP? Highly doubtful.

Look, you seem to take this very seriously. And that's fine. We all have our things. Do I think the Dodgers actually suck? No, they are obviously a very good baseball team. But they are not my team. I am in this thread to cheer on my team (the Giants) with fans of my team. And I'm here to give and take good-natured ribbing with fans of our rivals (the Dodgers), who also are fans of another team that I love (Cal). Even when I am giving some sh, I hope it comes across as fun. I mean, my goodness. What you're so mad about is that I said two dodgers prospect were not MVP CALIBER, but merely All Star candidates.

It doesn't seem to me, when you start getting into literal toilet humor or calling me a moron, that you are capable of that. And again, that's fine. We all have our reasons and our boundaries. But if you can't just have fun talking baseball, without such obvious vitriol, please talk to someone else. I'll try to remember to do the same.

Yes, and let me add:

This thread was started ten years ago. I'm not going to go through every single post I've made in those ten years to make sure I've always held myself to the above standard. I'd like to think that I have, but I wouldn't be surprised if I said things that I now would not say. But I feel pretty confident that in the last few years I've been cheering for my team but respectful (e.g. giving Lux credit as a potential All Star but not an MVP is pretty gracious). And I think almost everyone in this thread is having fun, too.

But even if I've failed more recently - this is me just saying - let's keep it fun.

Ummm... You said the 45 OPS slam in a season where a 21 year old had about 60 at bats. He has 260 already this year. Please note I called you a moron a few years back because you were pompously saying the dodgers were old with poor prospects. That hasn't aged well. I didn't call you a moron just now but certainly mocked your trashing of lux. You also aren't a moron.

I said the dodgers had some potential MVPs coming up in the ranks, like Lux, Smith etc... That's different than mvp caliber. The hot dodger prospect right now is Diego Cartaya. The dodgers were able to get mvp caliber Trea Turner with their elite prospects. Many say Cartaya can get them Soto. As for your plea for decency, you gotta take it if you dish it. Yes, the giants are the color of poop, and they are back to playing like it despite your projections. Buster Posey was an awesome player.

Does anyone have an over the plate view of this pitch? To me it looked like it crossed the plate, and giants fans are a bunch of *****es. Batter needs to protect the zone with two strikes even IF it missed by an inch.

I have to disagree with the last part of your post. IF it was an inch off the plate, then it's not a strike and was a bad call.

That being said. I sure couldn't tell if it was a strike or not from the angles I saw, so no real complaining from me. Them's the breaks in baseball (although I do support electronic calls so the breaks aren't as wildly unpredictable as with different umpires night to night - and even inning to inning).

Besides, as I Giants fan, I suspect the only real enjoyment I'm likely to derive from this thread (which I enjoy whenever it pops back up) this season, at least, is watching Chapman_is_gone's head explode everytime it gets bumped.

Honestly, this Giants season is more like how I expected last season to go. They should still be in the middle of a rebuild, but last season they got unexpected bounce-back, last-hurrah type seasons from their old guys (Posey, Crawford, Belt) and this season they don't have that. Plus all the little marginal stuff that went well last year has been bad this year: defense and relief pitching.

The future should still be bright.

I've never umpired a baseball game and would appreciate it if those who have would chime in; however, I would guess the call is made where the ball is when crossing the plate. Thus, a breaking ball is a bit more challenging than a fast ball.

And not particularly concerned about Chapman's head.

Last time da bums swept the Giants in a 4 game series was in '95. As a life long Giants fan, i am fed up wKapler & his inability to properly manage the pitching staff - no matter how bad it is. And the constant, never ending of shuffling position players is so bad. Every at bat, every pitcher entirely based on analytics - not good.

Honestly, I don't think that's the problem here. The Giants' biggest problem this season has been defense.

Offense? They're 4th in MLB in runs scored per game. That's been fine.

Pitching? They're 18th in runs allowed per game. Must be that, right? Well, if you look at "fielding independent" pitching stats (strikeouts, walks, and home runs allowed) they're 4th in MLB. The problem is that they're giving away too many runs in the field. If you watched the Dodger series, this seemed obvious: the late Dodger rallies were almost invariably kick-started by someone on the Giants making an error and giving away extra outs and baserunners.

Why such bad defense? Lack of continuity thanks to injuries doesn't help.

They have old players who mostly stayed healthy last year. Not so much this year.

After the Giants outperformed last season (Kapler has to get at least some of the credit, right?), I'm not near ready to give up on him. You look at the roster, it looks like a team that wins 80-89 games, which we are on track to do.

Giants are so deeply flawed. They did a great job hiding them last year - were very applicable to the phrase, 'sometimes better to be lucky than good.' A guy name Buster had everything to do w/it. Zaidi & Harris new in the off season that they have the oldest position- player group in the N.L. Yet did NOTHING about it. They still have the oldest position-player group in the N.L. Majority of championship caliber teams play excellent up the middle defense. I.e.; catcher, SS, 2nd base & CF. They need a guy like Wilson Contreras behind the plate. Plays good D & would be huge help in developing the pitching staff. Can also hit. Getting him would be a good start.

Zaidi has been focusing on rebuilding the Giants through the farm system, just as he did at his previous stops in Oakland and L.A. That process is going to take time. That he's even been able to get any winning ballclubs out of the twilight years of the current roster is impressive.

Were you complaining about this when they won 107 games?
Dgoldnbaer
How long do you want to ignore this user?
As a matter of fact, yes I was. I was constantly saying, "This constant shuffling will catch up to them. Will not keep working." Sure enough, it has caught up to them. And my perspective is one who thinks Zaidi and Harris were not prepared for exactly that - and consequently have not done what is necessary to "rebuild" the Giants. In the off season they did nothing re; acquiring players who would greatly help w/the loss of Buster. i.e.; signing Marte - an excellent fielding & hitting CFer now w/Mets. A MAJOR improvement to Slater! There were other good hitting, power hitting outfielders available but they did not pursue. And they should also have greatly lessened themselves of "aged" and mediocre players. i.e.; Longoria, Belt, LaStella, etc ... Even Crawford - a franchise that can trade the Set Hey kid can therefore trade anybody. They should have the perspective that Crawford's play in 2021 won't be repeated (age) and at least acquired a good fielding utility infielder who can play SS, if/when needed. They could/should use these guys & more to acquire needed prospects - and give our system it's much needed depth.
Dgoldnbaer

Now - 7 games after the ASG - we are 2 games under .500. We have degressed so much it's a true reflection on management, on the field and in the front office. They were better in 2020 than they are now.
