Wow, Cal students are puss now-a-days. Late afternoon and they are down for the count? Ridiculous.

I know, right? And they've never heard of hair-o-the-dog? That's the perfect reason to start at 9 like we do (not that we're recovering from the night before, but wine tastes as good at 9 as it does at 11 or 12).

For obvious reasons, many won't like it..But especially for homecoming vs Ucla..Even though its weeklong, there are alot of alums who come in on gameday and will now have to scurry/cram things in before kickoff. Cal students will also scowl since they sleep in so late and the stadium noise may suffer due to lack of refreshments for this vocal group! I hope the starting times change.

They've scheduled games around 12-12:30 for 90 years. That's the tradition. Why the kick back?

Cal games on TV were exceptionally rare.
Fans at Cal games were equally rare
[68Great: the non-student fans may have been rare, but the student rooting section was always packed even when Cal was 3-7 my first year.]

I am not sure what this has to do with modern times...
Now bringing in your own booze is much harder (bringing in your own water is is a 50-50 proposal). Therefore, everyone has to get their buzz pre-game. Not hard to understand..

[68Great: are you telling me that enterprising Cal students can't figure out how to get alcohol into Memorial. This isn't SFO. I have been able to get all kinds of stuff into Memorial over the past few years. A student should be able to put my exploits to shame. if the student's are lazy, all they have to do is read the United Airlines inflight catelog for plenty of ideas. ]

Go out Saturday night? The game IS the going out Saturday night. Plenty of time to get together and have a real tailgate pregame, get motivated, get to the game, leave, eat, sleep, read paper about how Tosh cried after his unit got abused.

Why not? Hotels, friends, family etc.
A day trip from Fresneck is a marathon event anyway. How does sitting in the noon-day sun make that block of time easier?
(I used to drive from Reno for every game; Noon games meant two nights in town - anyone who can drive 4 hours after a game do not do it right... I am exhausted after games for a good 8 hours).

[68Great: It is relatively easy to drive up and back from Fresno in one day. I have done it many times not just to Fresno area but to LA. The cost of the trip goes up exponentially if you have to add overnight accommodations. Then if you multiply that cost times 3 or 4 (for the 3 or 4 noon-time games) you are talking some big money in a tight economy. The cost of attending a lot of evening Cal games gets prohibitive - especially with kids.]

Simple: The student section makes most of the NOISE at Memorial..without them it sounds like..ATT..or worse. My three kids (all in their 20s now) did not need to get boozed for the games that they attended, but were all terrible starters in the morning..period. WE NEED THE STUDENTS at the games to be LOUD because we fans on our own, are not!!!! Noise in itself has become a big factor in recent years, and without a rabid fanbase, we need the students, and not because they are drunk!

What, don't our brilliant young'uns show up good-to-go for weekday morning classes too?

"picking TT won't be a problem with the sun because all the games start after 3:30 now" I suggest big Hats for the TT faithful and plenty of sun screen.

I'm amused at the aspersions cast by the old Blues on the non-existent students in this thread.

The students will be loud at Memorial regardless of what time it is. They have always been loud at Memorial. It's the rest of you they're worried about.

I'm with the minority...I like the afternoon start time. I wish it could be 12:30 or 1 like it used to be, but 12 is fine.

Chilling in the sun vs. huddling in the dark. Old school vs. made-for-TV abomination. Getting home in time to do something that night, whether it's going out or watching the 5pm prime-time game. And, yeah, less of a chance of having to deal with drunken a-holes who can't hold their booze (which gets old fast when one of them is 2-3 seats over from you)

I'm sure the student section, which already isn't that much worse for 12:30 games, will eventually be just as ready to go for those games as they are at 5pm - IF the team starts getting better. It's not like we're UCLA trying to get them to go to the Rose Bowl 25 miles away from school.

And for God's sake, this isn't Bay to Breakers where the event (aka the "race") is a joke and the whole thing is just an excuse for everyone to get sh!tfaced.

I'm cool with a noon start time. The only downside is that much of the student section shows up late, so you don't have that electrifying pre-game atmosphere you get at 5 PM. But the students do show up eventually and then everyone gets to enjoy a nice afternoon in the sun.

And now a national network audience will get to see a sun-bathed new Memorial in HD, on a channel they all get. I'll take it.

Since when was the traditional start time around noon?

I went to UC Santa Cruz, in fact. And I attended every Cal home game from 1981 to 1984 (save the 1982 Big Game because I was flew to New Jersey the day before).

Wow...bummer game to miss. That's a lot of losses to suffer through only to miss that one game during that period.

In hindsight, having been fortunate enough to be at there, I am not sure what I would have been okay with to miss that game!

Thanks Colorado. I was beginning to think that I was gonna have to scan in old programs or schedules to make the point. I don't know why people just assume that how it was when they were in school a few years back is how its been for even the last 50 years- let alone 90 or something.

As I said elsewhere in this thread, when I began following the bears in the late 60s, game time was 1:30. I hated it when it went to 1:00, and then to 12:30. Too darn early- no time to savor all the game day atmosphere, and especially hard on the tailgating. Those 2:00 and 2:30 kickoffs -in the days when passing was rare, and games went quicker because of fewer clock stops- would have been even better. Tailgating as a brunch activity, and getting done in time for dinner, were what college football *was* in the days before lighted stadiums and TV contracts.

Exactly. Noon versus 1:00 or 1:30 is actually a pretty big difference when it comes to enjoying the pre-game food, drinks and atmosphere that makes home games in Berkeley so great, even in the years when our team sucked.

That said, it is going to be great--I will establish some new "brunch" traditions for pregame to make sure I get to my seat by kickoff and then enjoy basking in victory with fellow Cal fans and some cold beers after the game.

Oct. 6th, UCLA at California, 12pm, Fox

Oct 20th, Stanford at California, 12pm, Fox

Nov 10th, Oregon at California, 12pm, Fox

Seems like Fox really likes the new stadium and also wants to party it up in SF at night. (It's going to be very awkward when ESPN gameday comes to town for 10-0 Oregon visiting 10-0 Cal on November 10th).

This would also mean the only home game left for pickup is ASU.

*though the PDF I saw has 'subject to change', which means of course if Cal starts sucking, who knows when we'll play.

1:30-2 pm would be best. Enough time to lollygag around in the morning and get out late enough to grab an early dinner in Berkeley

My thoughts exactly. Noon is just a little too early for pregame tailgating, and doesn't lend itself well to a post-game dinner nearby.
