Kirby Smart or Pat Narduzzi, call me crazy. Do it.

I like Smart, good mentors.
Narduzzi lots of enthusiasm, a bit out of control and plays the 4-3.

I attended a tailgate at the Ohio State game where I spoke with a bigger donor in the know, who told me without a doubt there is a donor or donors ready and willing to buy out the contract...that 4 and 1 not only pissed off the masses, but also many players from what I'm told.

As for a possible coach, forget about the big names...I was told we would be looking for a no name up and comer type from a conference like the MAC etc. I was reminded that many top level coaches came through that conference, including one of the attendees husband, Urban Meyer...

Dave Doeren, NIU and Pete Lembo Ball St.

What about the $10 million donation from the Goldmans? Is it just a coincidence that Tedford's buyout is roughly the same? Could this already be in the works?

The question of Tedford's coaching ability aside, I would have no interest in tailgating with "wealthy, influential, and well connected alums" because so many of them are self important pompous blowhards that should stick to what they know best: popping off in the Men's Grill at the country club, acting on insider information stock tips, and figuring out how to have the lowest tax rate possible. As was evidenced at the game today, as well as at basketball games, half the b*stards don't even show up for the games anyway.

Is the common view that short of a miracle, Tedford is a dead man walking? While it will be tough to endure this season, having a new coach that will instill a little attitude and get Cal back to its winning ways before the football program falls of the cliff into oblivion, is what Cal needs. I had a chance to speak with one of the more influential donors a year ago during the off season and we spoke of Tedford's need to win or the possibility that a change was needed. While he and his wife were both Tedford supporters at that time, they did acknowledge that a bad season this year was unacceptable. What ever is done, Cal needs to make sure that the next coach has ability to evaluate and develop QB talent, recruit players and bring in a coaching staff that knows offense and defense and have the ability to get this team to the next level. Too much money has been invested into the program not to see results.

Great article by Jenkins. Tedford is done. I'm glad that the big donors are FINALLY realizing this.

Without the least bit of irony or sarcasm, straight up, THANKS for my only laugh of this dark day Bearister.

I think we're seriously looking at 3-9. We may beat Utah and Wazoo. I don't think we beat anyone else. If this happens, I cannot see any circumstance where Tedford survives this.

I don't think even the Stanfurd game can save him. And as was evident today, the team seems to be done with him. The penalties and mistakes mean they either don't care, cannot be taught, or are now ignoring him.

Thanks for this bit of insight. Personally I prefer tailgaiting with self important, pompous blowhards that also happen to be complete losers. Say, what're you doing next weekend?

Can't help but daydream about how much better off we'll be without Tedford. Imagine when we get a real coach who plays the best guys. Just by replacing Maynard and starting Bigelow, our team should be vastly improved. Can't wait.

I don't even think we'll be beating Wazoo, especially in Pullman.

Allow me to be very blunt here: my knowledge of the inner workings of the AD and the Athletic Department are largely limited to things I research, observe, and understand. My contacts within the AD are limited; I do not consider myself to have "special inside" knowledge.

Having said that, any AD worth his/her salt will have a short list for replacing a head coach for any sport in the event it is necessary, for whatever the reason. It is pro forma, or at least should be.

John Kasser was famously caught unaware and unprepared when Steve Mariucci resigned in January 1997 to take the 49ers HC job. Kasser was left grasping and more than a little miffed. The timing of Mariucci's departure so close to LOI day played a role in Kasser's next move. Just 13 months earlier Kasser had wanted to hire Bob Davie to succeed Keith Gilbertson. But a number of alums on the search committee insisted on hiring Steve Mariucci, so much so that Kasser told Davie that Mariucci would be offered the job. Davie withdrew his candidacy and Mariucci was named head coach.

Kasser's reaction after Mariucfci left was to offer the job to Tom Holmoe because he was on staff and Kasser felt he could best salvage the recruiting class. Kasser might have offered the job to Hue Jackson, but Jackson had already left for the OC job at USC under John Robinson.

In short, Kasser was left with a Hobson's Choice: (1) hire the remaining (defensive) coordinator and probably salvage what was left of the recruiting class or (2) start a quick search for a new head coach with less than 3 weeks to LOI day. Great choice, right?

I simply can't imagine that Sandy would be caught so unprepared.

actually, money played a much bigger role in highering holmoe. It had very little to do with 1 recruiting class. The dynamics of the department were MUCH different back then.

Is dead on. It also works the other way when you need to find a coach quickly because someone stole your coach. All ADs have a short list. Whether or not that list pans out is another story. Schools like SC and UCLA had long searches recently, ending up with Plan D or more (Pete Carrol was the best Plan D I have ever seen)

It's like Tedford wants to be bought out - I was at the game Today

1. No Bigelow - you can't get him five touches per half? Really?

2. Maynard missing receivers all over the field (Allen deep, Harper deep, wide open and Maynard just missing by a mile). Put in Bridgford or put in Hinder - someone who can throw a pass.

3. Having to call a TO right after receiving the kick-off

4. Going for the FG still needing two scores when your offense has done nothing the whole game

5. Not taking the holding penalty (twice) - really, that's when you try to be aggresive?

Let's move on - Tedford is done. Not sure what happened but every decision he makes is like the 100% wrong one at this point.

I remember this sequence of events and always wondered why we didn't hire Jackson back; he should have been able to return since the move to HC would have been a promotion.

Hiring a new coach on the cheap is furd envy. They found hairball cheap. Since we are just as smart we can do it also must be the thinking. The only problem with that is the FB TV $ fueled arms race is just starting. Cal will not have a competitive FB program unless the money is invested in FB operations starting now.

I don't think the defenses failure today was due to poor coaching/preparation but, execution. The middle of the defense is very young in class and experience: Sebastian(So)/Lowe(So) at S and Jefferson(Fr)/Forbes(So) at ILB. Sebastian and Lowe both excelled last year on ST but, injuries ended their seasons. This is the first significant PT for all four, over-pursuing I can expect, the DL unfortunately, has been under-performing as a stand alone unit. The blitzes today were effective, in-fact many of the players got through.

This. The defense, while having letdowns, is not our main problem. We need an offense which holds onto the ball, sustains drives (or at least scores quick TDs w/ Bigelow), and keeps the defense fresh.

I am too lazy to look up but I bet you would find it SHOCKING how few times in the last 5 years we have sustained a 10+ play scoring drive. One would need to go back and look at ESPN scoring play summaries. Compare it to, for example, a team like USC and you will get VERY VERY depressed.

Haha! Well said, bearister!

I think rational people can see that while Cal has struggled, this team is probably 5 plays from being 4-1 with a win over Ohio State. Jeff Tedford has simply done too much, including the new facilities, not to be given a chance to turn it around. It starts next week against UCLA, a team we will beat soundly.

And LOL at the people throwing out names like Kirby Smart and Manny Diaz.

I'm pretty sure that AD Sandy Barbour has been reviewing possibilities for at least a season. I suspect that the only reason Tedford has survived the last 2 seasons has been the work on the stadium and the fact that the contract didn't have a proper "buyout".

The only question is who she's looking at and if any ambitious DCs or OCs have quietly sent her resumes. THe fact that Tedford has been on a hot seat for the past 2 seasons hasn't exactly been a secret.
