Atoe didn't have the units, and Lenui dropped a class that he was told he had to take to be UC eligible. Both had good GPAs and test scores for revenue sports recruits. My sense, after reading Moraga's posts, is that the kids screwed-up in both cases, but we don't know for sure since its all private.

FWIW, most schools are going through this right now where the find a few guys are not eligible when push comes to shove.

Thanks, WIAF.

i'm assuming Atoe was on track to have the right # units when we were recruiting him. did he not sign up for enough classes since then, or what?

players who haven't qualified in last 3 classes:

Bennett
Ford

As I remember both Atoe and DL Kelly were recruited as mid-year enrollees. Kelly made it but Atoe needed more units so he stayed at Mateo. You would think he could have made up any deficiency in the spring semester.

Just a while back we took in that MLB from College of San Mateo. When did the staff first find out about Chandler dropping a required course?

So, where exactly are both guys heading right now? Can they get the classes they need and enroll in January? Grey shirt??? Are they gone for sure?

Whether this is on Dykes or not is irrelevant. He is not the guy to turn the bus around. I say it's 65% likely we have a new coach before 2015 season. I just don't see this season being much more than 3 wins at best.

For the most part, very true.

Unfortunately, Dykes is responsible for the team and the team just took a hit.

One of these days we are going to get more good news than bad. Some day.

In hindsight, it now makes sense why a 4-star recruit like Leniu had only one other Pac-12 offer (WSU). His other options weren't very good either (Fresno, SJSU, Kansas, Nevada, Iowa State).

Because it sells season tickets. Remember, tickets are non-refundable. Lie, sell tickets, then let the chips fall later. That is standard practice. And it's been going on pretty consistently under SB.

I can't even imagine how many new season ticket packages were sold when we signed Atoe. 10K? 20K?

We did have a decent number of other LBs signed this year -- Tongilava, Anoai, Downs, Porchivina. But losing Atoe will hurt DB depth especially with Drew potentially gone.

Moraga talked to him and he said he just couldn't make all the units in the summer semester. It was widely know he has to take a lot of classes to make it. Usually academic info is privileged so I don't know if Moraga can comment on specifics. Moraga?

Leniu was probably the only true middle linebacker of the bunch though. various reports was that he was a tackling machine and the biggest problem we had last year with our linebackers was tackling people. was probably the most college ready of the bunch and would have contributed right away.

who offered the recruits? responsibility falls on both the staff and the recruits.

that's like asking why the staff is ever liable for results on the field when the players are the ones that are required to lift, eat, sleep, go to class, memorize plays, execute on the field.

staff usually keep in touch with recruits to communicate requirements, touch base, make sure they are taking the right courses and are on track to qualify. obviously in cases like Takk, where they are just short of the cutoff eligibility, nothing you can do. but let's not act like staff has nothing to do with getting players eligible, and getting eligible players.

sucks that we are seemingly only pursuing strong academic players, yet already have almost the same # of ineligible recruits as we did in 2012 (Takk [accepted risk], Ford, Bennett). we just have sh*t luck.

Almost everyone ends up with a few non-qualifyers these days. Not just the SEC. Even Furd has a couple from time to time. These hut because they were obvious position of needs. You have to remember these recruits often verbal long before they graduate or are scheduled to transfer in the case of JCs, and stuff happens.

From what I understand, they told Atoe what classes he needed to complete and what grades he needed to get this spring and he fell short so that ship has sailed.

For those that think the staff dropped the ball, they don't know this staff very well.

You can fault them for on-field results last season but when it comes to recruiting and to academic oversight with their players, they bust tail.

This staff has done a great job turning around academics. That does nothing to redeem the results of last season, but at least the program is improving in some respects. Now we need wins!

im sure the staff deserves some credit but the credit is also due to the AD on this one as well by just fixing some of the oversights as far as providing the necessary resources for the team. the planning for it started above Dykes pay grade, but the staff is responsible for putting the academic plan into action

Just got word from a friend on the team that Max Espitia just got kicked off the team for failing a third drug test, so the blows keep coming to our depth. Apparently he was really good after making the switch to LB too, so he would have been a potential impact player this year on defense. Hopefully, this is it for now.

I'm hearing also that since there isn't much summer school (if at all) for any of the players this summer, the fall camp is going to be that much harder come August 3rd, with many two a days in store.

According to my friend the team is better overall than last year but they are still so young that even though they will compete better, he doesn't see them winning more than 4-5 games. That isn't to say they won't try to do better, but the players themselves know how hard the Pac 12 has become year in and year out to compete in (and to regularly win games in). Let's see what unfolds after Fall camp though, any more injuries would be devastating.

Also a lot is up in the air regarding the defensive backfield. Safeties and corners and depth/starting positions will need to be clarified by the coaching staff as fall camp unfolds. The staff has multiple players preparing for both roles as of now.
