yeah, I thought we had the 'all-hands' team in there

Also have to seriously question the coaching staff putting the same formation out there with the right side of the field stacked and only three players on the left side, especially after literally just seeing them kick it to the left side 15 seconds earlier in their first on-sides attempt. Throwing the ball out of bounds was bone-headed on the first attempt, but cowering from it on the second attempt was something I don't remember ever seeing on a football field. I feel bad for the kid but I think there may be an opening on the starting special teams unit.

Yah I don't get that one.

Why they were backing up on the rekick is a head scratcher. You can go get the ball you guys!

yeah, they looked like the ball was a hot potato
special teams coach has some work to do

Arguing about worst losses is a very Cal thing to do, but I'll bite. Oregon State game cost us the #1 national ranking, killed our season, and essentially marked the turning point in the death of Tedford's extraordinarily successful program up to that point, at least IMO.

Yes. Tedford was emasculated by that game. This game is as bad because it confirms what I will always know--if I wanted a Rose Bowl, Cal was the one sure thing wrong place to go to school. Growing up in an SC family. I knew better. Damn this sucks. Year after year after decade.

man, were you at the 07 Riley game? i ask only because that was a PAINFUL ending.

kudos to ua for getting the hail mary, but the feeling of not even being able to get a shot at a score because you ran out your own clock when in field goal range.........i would throw my laminated play book and headset.

I watched it on TV. I don't even put it in the same league as this. This was supernatural.

the sad thing is Goff, our WRs and RBs had an awesome game
just a shame that we could put up that many points and still lose the game

agree, but we put in Rubenzer (the play before) and he lost yards because all 11 AZ players tackled him

Lol. That really made me laugh!! So true...

Fully agree. Franklin should be fired on his use of Rubenzer alone.

don't get me wrong, this was really really bad. pretty epic debacle. how about we just say two worst plays we have ever seen. i've seen hail marys along with epic/exciting comebacks. but #1 ranking within reach and then running out your own clock to lose? i've only seen that once.

I think the whole point of that play, is that if we line up on the other side the first guy kicks it. There isn't much you can do besides field the ball.

Well you can at least put an even number of guys on either side rather than leaving three on one side.

The throws were there all game for Arizona. In the first half QB was just missing throws, WRs dropping them, etc. Our run defense was pretty solid, but DBs were getting destroyed. Not a single DB could go 1 on 1 with their receiver.

Goff was actually on overshadowed by the Arizona QB in the second half. He put up 36 points in the fourth quarter. That's pretty amazing.

How about the '90 Big Game. Stanford recovered the onside kick in that one. I forget if the kicker missed the first one, and then the penalty gave him a second shot, or if the penalty just moved him into range. That was the first Cal game I ever watched, and it seems to have set the tone ever since.

But this game featured the opponent recovering an onside kick when it was expected, and making a hail mary in the same game. Multiply the odds of both of those happening. Truly hard to believe this really happened. One in 500, a thousand maybe.

Sounds terrible, but was before my time. Attended my first Cal game when I was eight, on October 29, 1994 against the Cougs, losing by a score of 26-23.

Exactly. I think everyone on this board could name a half dozen plays we could have run on 3rd and whatever that would have put us close to the first down or made the first down. Then we could have gone for the fourth and short if need be. The Rube run up the middle was brutal. I think it worked once all night and it certainly wasn't going to work with UA stacking the box.

I was already having bad thoughts at the tipped-up interception. Seriously, we regularly have like 2-3 disasters of Biblical proportions which we perform in order to lose games which we have no earthly way of losing.

Let's put things into perspective, here. It's been awhile since we regularly are even in a position to win.

Of course, the other perspective is that we were up 22 and gave the game away through an onside kick, a hail mary, and 36 fourth quarter points.

When you put it that way I'm actually shocked they didn't deploy the Statue of Liberty on us for the 2 point conversion, a la Boise State in the Fiesta Bowl.

The only thing that made me slightly chuckle post-mortem, after I'd sobered up:

Fellas, regardless of any specific outcome, I'm happy to be a Cal Bear and wouldn't want to be part of any other college fan base or online community. Hope everyone can bounce back on Sunday to enjoy some good times with family and friends.

um ... two of their fathers are Hardy Nickerson, Sr. and Brian Treggs. Their teams were pretty good and fun to watch.

Why did the game take so long? 7pm kickoff, and it was close to 11pm by the time it was over. Unacceptable. I really wish college football got rid of the clock stopping on 1st downs.
