But If they get the yardage for the run they don't get to replay the down. It's one or the other. They either had a first down and it's now 1st and 15 or they get the yardage and its 2nd and 6. Instead it was first and 6, which makes no sense.

Spot of the foul penalty. Since it occurred 10 yards downfield, but before the runner passed the first down marker it becomes first and 6. If it had been 11 yards downfield they make it first and ten after marking off the penalty.

Sounds like a penalty you should TRY to get every down.

Agreed. It seems like we all noticed something weird. It MUST have been a mistake by the officials.

The D calmed down after the first series and has come up with turnovers. They have stepped up in the first half. SDSU hasn't scored since.

Encouraged by secondary. But d-line worrisome - allowing large holes for a smallish running back.

Are people seriously complaining about the D? 7 points and 170 yards? I'll take it.

The defense appeared to improve as the game went on. I'm still wondering what happened to the starting QB for SDSU. He was 6/10 and doing well. Chapman is 2/5 and averaging only 3.4 yards per attempt.

Yup. it is PTCD (Post Traumatic Cal Disorder). The past 2 years there wouldn't have been the capacity to adjust. I thought that whatever Kaufman did (I wish we had better commentators on this) started to work. One thing I noticed was that we started bringing edge pressure and that helped. Another seemed to be bringing up the safety a bit to support.

Exactly.....we aren't Alabama but a hell of a lot better than last year....we do not make that interception last year. We still have a ways to go, but guys are making plays and adjustments....

against the same QB who threw 5 INTs against USD last week?

sure, i'll take any defense where we can ultimately win the game, but lots of work to do here. hope to see improvements coming out of the locker room. not getting much pass rush, wonder if we'll try to be more aggressive on the ball

i'm sure the refs botched that up, should have been 2nd and 6 not 1st and 6

Still makes no sense...gives them the gain and first down over...might as well have called offside on the defense.

Yeah, I thought they had an extra down there, too.

The refs screwed up the spot on the penalty. It should have been enforced from where the assistance started in stead of where he ended up. It should have been 1st and 9

I'm still trying to figure out what happened to Max Smith. He was doing well, but disappeared and the new QB Christian came in. Christian hasn't been nearly as good.

We're trying to figure it out, too. It was WAY too early to pull Smith. Unless there's an injury that the Pac 12 Network guys can't be bothered to report...

Seriously, though, Smith's experience should give him the edge over Chapman who is a redshirt freshman! This may just end up being a bad call by Rocky Long. Midway through the 2nd is just way, way too early to pull a QB who had been decent up to that point. (Not great, but not bad.)

Tackling has been weak. Improve defense, but maybe not as much as we thought after Grambling. Kragen looks small, getting engulfed by the SDSU olinemen. Great to see Devante getting a sack.

You got it backwards. SDSU (who we are now playing) picked off USD 5 times.

I only would want Goff on my NFL team if he had the ability to virtually complete passes...its an underutilized skill in the pro's.

Pumphrey is deceptive - he's small, but plays like a bigger back (he's very strong for his size).

But your point about the line play is valid. We got a push on several plays, creating holes for Pump and Chase Price to run through. We just can't get our passing game together. If we had Goff and you had Smith & Chapman it would likely be 14-7 SDSU. Goff is the difference in this game. He's really good. Like I said before - he's going to be a really good NFL QB.

True - with 2 pick sixes. SDSU's defense looked great last week - but USD is a FCS Non Scholarship team and the game was only set up because one of our opponents dropped out and we couldn't find a replacement willing to come to San Diego.

Smith's last play was a 3rd and 8 pass way off target with about 11 minutes left in the 2nd qtr. Looks like he was pulled after that. Bad call by Rocky Long if that is the case. Smith was doing better than the new qb and I think is a big part of why our D is looking better.

Interestingly I just peeked at the stats. Officially Pumphrey is 12-49 so far, but he has one carry for 21 yards, so if you remove that he's 11-28, which is under 3.0 YPC. I thought he'd done a lot better.
