Dykes is no Tedford at this point (and I wanted Tedford gone).

Whatever a lot of you are smoking... I'll have some!!!

You got that right! Dykes at his best isn't much better than Tedford at his worst.

Oh, yeah, happens all the time. And it is fair and reasonable. If the school has to pay the coach to get out of the contract early, only fair that the coach has to pay the school to get out of the contract early.

As a general rule, however, the hiring school takes care of the buyout, it is part of the overall hiring package. For instance, when Bielema went from Wisconsin to Arkansas, he owed a $1 million buyout to Wisconsin, which Arkansas paid. His new 6 year contract with Arkansas then had an initial $3 million buyout that Bielema would have to pay if he left, that drops by $500,000 each year.

In Dykes case, the $2M drops to $1M after 12/31, so if he takes another job, he can just let the new school know he isn't taking the job until 1/1. Of course, to make everything clean, he can just negotiate with Cal and everyone can walk away immediately with the post 12/31 $1M buyout, rather than make an awkward transition.

Yes I would imagine the employer would take care of it (maybe it would effectively be like a transfer fee like in European football), otherwise why would you pay up front for a job where will be working to just break even for like a good portion of the year? So I guess what I am saying is that I've never seen a coach or player have to pay out of pocket to move somewhere else. No one would do it if it actually happened.

I think Mike Williams might have been played. Rumors force the "Sonny is my guy" talk which only increases Sonny's market value. I have to say Sonny's agent is winning so far.

He'll be money if Sonny bolts though because of a modest extension. No need to give him everything he wants. Stay the course Mike. If Mike said that (Sonny is my guy) for show to the recruits, yet provided Sonny with a pedestrian offer for a pedestrian job done, I would be impressed.

I really get tired of this coaching bull$hit. Every couple of years change staffs lose recruits have players who don't fit in new coaches system tell everybody how much you love Cal. Just hire Peeler.

Should just can him if that is the case.

The word is out now. It really should force Williams hand... a self respecting school just can't bring him back and have it look like we are some kind of last resort.

Or at least pull the offer and start lining up the interviews (and donors). Definitely can't extend now.

Amen! Now's the time to sh*t can him. Cal should be the last resort for no one! Bye, bye, Sonny, and don't let the door hit you in the a$$ on your way out.

Sonny to Mizzou and Cal hires Tony Franklin as head coach. Tony then implements his revolutionary TFS Defense, aka TFDS, which involves all blitzes, all the time. We give up a lot of points, but eventually wear the other team down and pull away in the 4th quarter. Cal wins the 2017 Rose Bowl over Michigan 97-93. Harbaugh meets Franklin mid field after the game, and says "What's your deal!"

Tony Franklin decides why fucking not and coaches QBs, RBs, WRs, OL, DL, LBs, and the punters.

I am amused at the posters who are predicting, "This could end up horribly for us..."

Always the negative slant. Never a chance that something really good MIGHT happen. Hey, Sonny could leave and Cal could hit a homerun. That is possible, you know? Maybe a new guy could turn out much better than Sonny???? You guys know that it is possible to upgrade...

If we really are his last resort we should make sure the offer of an extension expires quickly. Let him come back with his tail between his legs - he will still need to coach his ass off. It's not like he's going to be on anyone's list of coaches to hire if he puts in a half-assed job and leads us to 3 or fewer wins. And let's be honest, Sonny is only valuable as a WR coach or a HC. No one is hiring him to be an OC at this point - you would really just want TFS.

I'm not sure what to believe, but from a negotiating leverage standpoint, I don't like the idea of holding open an extension and letting him interview for an extended period of time. I don't think you fire him - if he's going to go somewhere else let's collect that buyout fee, but we should certainly not be overpaying to keep someone who is only here because he couldn't find gainful employment elsewhere.

That is not possible with Cal Football. It has been all downhill since Andy Smith.

I think we will be fine no matter what. I wasn't too excited about future prospects under Dykes but was willing to be hopeful that he could surprise us. Likewise, I can be hopeful that the next coach will be a pleasant surprise.

It depends what you mean by upgrade. I could be wrong, but the chances of replacing Dykes with another coach with Division I experience seem pretty small, given what Cal appears to be prepared to pay. Therefore, we're looking at Division I coordinators or FCS coaches looking to step up. On paper, that's not an upgrade. But we could hit a home run and end up with early Jeff Tedford redux. We will just have to see. I'm willing to roll the dice, because I'm in the camp that doesn't think Dykes can get us to the top of the conference, based on what I've seen in his first three years, and his prior coaching history. It's a guess. I could be wrong. If nothing else, we now have a better idea of how Cal is viewed in the football coaching fraternity, in the wake of the money spent to upgrade the facilities. I think we in the fan base overestimated how much of a difference that would make.

We're off the hook for Tedford and Buh. That and we'd get $2 mil back from Sonny's buyout. Take that $ and build a war chest a go hire a real freaking ball coach. No more of this buying Popov and passing it off like it's Grey Goose BS. We built a $430 mil house and we're always turning off lights and paying the electric bill late. Enough with this crap! Let's go all in.

It's more troubling for our coach to be doing this, in this situation. Or am I reading this all wrong? Is this just business and no big deal (and this could all be moot if he signs the extension)?

Maybe Sonny is self-aware enough to realize that next season is going to be pretty rough without Jared Goff and most of the WRs. So the idea is to bail now while he still can.

Kind of like how Pete Carroll bailed on USC for the Seahawks once he realized that NCAA sanctions were not just possible and far off in the future, but likely and imminent.

Maybe the decision-makers could decide to pay more now in contract with the idea that a great, experienced coach will build excitement and actually fill the stadium on a regular basis. Thus, money comes back...
Wouldn't that be nice????

If we go cheap again, it'll be because of a fear of a faculty revolt. Dirks is working to convince them that a good athletic program helps the academic side, but I doubt he's there yet.
