I think Cal is a difficult place to win. I don't think we will be able to compete with the top programs for the top coaches. However, I don't think Dykes is a top tier coach either. As such, while I would have been content with Dykes staying, if he is requesting top tier coach salary or Cal to commit long term with no exit options and he is willing to let his agent tell the world that Cal would be his last option, then I would rather roll the dice. I don't think we can perform that much worse that we have been the last three years, but, even if we could, I wouldn't be that much more miserable than thinking that we have hit the ceiling with a 4-5 conference record without a single win against any of the CA schools.

Cal not weak. Cal STRONG! Toughen up your thinking, NYCGOBEARS. You're better than that.

Be more like Cal, less like someone who posts the everyone come out of woodwork.

Interview at Missouri WEAK!

Someone please define top tier coach and then Cal as a top tier coached destination.

A good coach in the right fit can produce great results.

I think the "generalized" concept of a top tier coach is a mis fit at Cal bc of the unique aspects of our standards, admin, alums, expectations, bureaucracy.

Every U has these aspects our mixture is our own.

The "fit" we need vs what I hear people desire doesn't sound aligned to me.

You would hope he has plan B/C/D lined up. I would suspect MW is smart enough not to go into a negotiation without alternatives. I think it is Sonny who has left no alternatives for himself. If any of what is being posted is true (or he doesn't clear it up soon and, thereby, affirms by silence), he has already lost the fan base. Saying that Cal would be the last option while still being the coach at Cal is a crappy way to handle the negotiation and shows lack of integrity. Most of us would be willing to let this go if he denies the reports soon, but keeping it alive for much longer would mean loss of support from our fan base.

MW's has a Cal Econ degree, an MBA, and spent his career in corporate finance. At the very least he knows how to properly value an extension to protect Cal's interests and has an idea of what else is out there if Sonny walks.

MW's already taken away Sonny's leverage with both Cal and potential new schools. Was in both Cal's and JT's best interests to have his name linked with the Falcons. Doesn't do Cal any favors to have Sonny linked with Mizzou right now. Sonny needs to cut a deal quickly or come back to Cal. He's tolerated now, but far from beloved and won't be welcomed back with open arms if this drags on. Sonny and his agent aren't too bright if he interviewed without a very good chance of getting the job. If he wants out fine, but MW shouldn't get into s bidding war over a mediocre coach.

Sonny beat stanfurd, Sonny get STRONG money. Like Cal. And Cal Strong.

Cal STRONG!

I disagree if we get a pro-style coach that it will make the rebuild even longer. The pieces are here to have a decent pro-set team..big offensive line with experience. Solid WR core. Even the RBs here fit the pro-set far more than spread imho. Khalfani is a spread RB...Tre and Vic Enwere are very well suited to a pro-style offense. Offensively we lack a good fullback and Tight Ends..you'd have to hit JCs to fill those in imho.

Seems to me like this is our only option. New coach who favors a pro style and who gets the team fired up. We don't need a big-money type to do this.....the right Power-5 coordinator (more likely) or mid-major HC (less likely) could fit this mold. Even if the next two years are painful transition years, that may be necessary, and based on Minot's assessment, the transition may not even be that bad.

Staying with Sonny (or another Air Raid type) and watching our sad little gimmick offense eke out wins against Oregon State and Colorado and come up short against the real teams year after year while all hope is killed and our home crowds dwindle to 20k? Now that's bad.

Frankly I think Sonny Dykes is toast at Cal. The rumor mill says the staff, media and younger alum liked him...but the Old Blues wanted him gone for a very pragmatic reason: not enough winning. For many Old Blues, the clock is ticking and they don't have much time left to see a RB. Anyone who attended Cal from the 60s. Old Blue want him gone...and he gives them half of what they want...a foot out the door. Yup, and I guess I'm an Old Blue now too. I think SD is toast, or worst yet a lame duck coach without the good QB and WRs and a crap defense.

I'm guessing just the opposite....that most of our Old Blues think just like many here think the typical low-football-expectation-having Cal alum thinks. Maybe we can win 8 games once in awhile. Sonny has improved from 1 to 5 to 7 wins. We're never getting to a Rose Bowl anyway. He's improved academics. I'm psyched about a trip to the Las Vegas Bowl. We're Cal. We dare not compete with furd and UCLA and USC. This is the best we dare hope for. Let's just re-sign him.

Here's how this ends: Sonny ends up at Missouri. We reduce his buyout by half (so $500K). Everyone goes home happy, saves face, and no more Piedmont NIMBYs and unrealistic academic requirements. I'm sure Sonny wanted Houston, but Missouri's not too far. (plus he can recruit Texas, y'all)

I guess my treatise on why Sonny will never smell roses will not be published in January. Anyway, guys if he is gone - we caught a huge break. Now you have to capitalize on it by thinking outside the box. Go young, go aggressive , go where no one else is looking. Head Coach - UW DC Pete Kwiatkowski - currently making 485K. His defenses look pretty good to me. Now look at rushing team leaders past few years. New Mexico after 3 straight 1-11 seasons has made their way over four years to 7-5 running the football. Look at the OL coach - look at the guys he has put in the pros. His name is Lenzmeier and he is making 130K. Have HC look at him for OL or even rushing game coordinator. Then go hire Paul Rhoades to mix in a little gray hair - he can run the defense or special teams. Their kids love playing for everyone of these guys. The two younger guys have bright futures. Remember - a year ago no one knew who Tom Herman was. All of the above is doable and affordable.

Edit- run the ball and play defense. " yes I am certain I heard or read this somewhere"

Bad timing imo...I'm concerned as to how things play out I'd rather deal with know probable(dykes) vs the unknown probable (New HC system schemes...Oc/Dc.. ) and roster adjustment/team chemistry

For the Sake of the players and true fans/followers hope this works out for the best

But that would make Husky fans angry and bitter! Wait, never mind, that's their usual state.

I agree with the rest of your approach. It's very do-able to find a diamond in the rough that won't break our budget....which at Cal, apparently can't be broken.

Bob Gregory is on the UW staff. I wonder what he has had to say to Coach K about working at Cal, and whether it would help or hinder any effort Cal might make to hire him.

Christmas coming early? Buyout money and a new coach. If Mizzou wants him Cal needs to extract maximum buyout money.

One thing I wonder is.....where does Sonny end up if Mizzou doesn't want him? They're looking at other candidates and their fanbase may not be so enthusiastic about him. If he doesn't want to return here, where else could he go?

Good points, EXCEPT #1. Keep in mind, the threatened boycott actually reflects very well on the prior coaching staff, since the coaches were 100% behind the players. Had they stayed, they could have played the "we've got our African American players' backs" card.

Um, where do you get the idea that the threatened boycott could make the coaching staff look good in any way? Sure they might be able to claim "we've got our player's backs", but I can guarantee you that other schools would be using it as a negative recruiting tool. "If you go to Mizzou the coaching staff there is so weak the team nearly boycott a game. THink of what that does to your NFL prospects if you are dragged along as part of such a boycott?"

You also have the fact that the coaches had to say they supported the team. If they didn't would the players have stuck by them for the last few games? I'm sure that a huge part of why the coach suddenly announced that "I have cancer and will retire" was more of a case where he got called into an office and was told. "The players embarrassed the university with their boycott threat. Either you kick the leaders off the team, or you won't return in 2016." The coach decided to fall on his sword rather than admit that he had allowed the team to lose focus on football during the season.
