I disagree is way a "down year" for the conference. No single dominant team but USC and Furd easily could be in the play off picture minus fumbled snaps under center and Sark's drinking problems. Wazzu was better and we played UTAH when they were healthy and good.

Part of it was simply bad luck. If we play Utah when their overused RB was hurt and played Oregon prior to Adams return (like other schools we are comparing ourselves to) those 2 games might have been far different.

Not "MIGHT have been different" but "WOULD have been different".

Cal would be at 9-3 and looking at a very good Bowl Game. How would posters feel about Sonny under those circumstances.
1-11; 5-7; 9-3.

If he went 9-3 then no question he'd be extended and worthy of a nice raise. There wouldn't be much debate about keeping him.

This stuff cuts both ways, though. If we'd played WSU later in the season we might have taken a loss to them. If we'd played Texas in a "normal" year for them rather than a very down year that might have been a loss too (and we only won by 1 point as it is). Our record is probably about right based on how the team played and the schedule we had.

My best friend in Graduate school did a really interesting dissertation that looked at different governing systems for institutions of higher ed. The most they look like Mizzu's the harder it is to raise one's academic standards/reputations because the governing body is driven by short term thinking and responds to political winds. Systems like Cals (with Reagents appointed by multiple entities and with fixed terms) are the best for getting good academics (but interestingly, have the worst sports outcomes because bubba has no one to bitch to when the President prioritizes the library over the weight room).

What wasn't covered is the outliers (which in my opinion are often the most interesting cases) - such as UCLA - which I continue to believe emerged because of having Young in the Chancellor's chair for 30+ years.

W/o top faculty, a Cal degree would be worth as much as a degree from San Jose State. I would have gone to UCLA or stanfurd if it weren't for Cal's academic reputation.
