Butte legend declares Return of the Jedi the best Star Wars film (scroll to last minute).

Honest Question -- I'm and old fart and have never seen any of the Star War movies. This doesn't come up often, but when I mention this people can't believe it; they seem to think I'm an alien who's only just recently arrived and taken on human form.

My question: Are these worth watching if you don't have the nostalgia of seeing them when you were young going for you? If so, which ones and in what order? Are there any you should avoid?

I saw the first one (I'm sorry, but it's called "Star Wars") the third night it came out at the Coronet in SF. Guys in my college house had gone the previous night and came back raving. Very good, broke new ground in many ways, but maybe a tad overrated and simplistic.

The Empire Strikes Back remains one of my all-time favorite movies. Great scenes, great lines and lots to talk about afterwards, especially in relation to to the first one. "Good", "evil", "black", "white": May not always be what you think. Curiously, Mick LaSalle, a film critic whom I really respect, didn't like this one. That guy writes ten times better than me, and knows film a thousand times better, but, sorry, he's wrong and I'm right, in this one case.

As Dajo9 said, Return of the Jedi made me realize that the main focus was rapidly becoming selling product.

I saw the 5th one, then passed on the two most recent ones.

Mick Lasalle says this one's great, so who knows? I'm not rooting against it, or anything. One thing I do know, I'm already sick of all the product marketing. Guess what EVERY little boy is getting for Christmas this year? I wish I had a piece of that action...

I'm not so sure it's not true. I have a theory that I won't share because I think it will end up being right and a big spoiler.

I grade ROTJ down for this reason. Ewoks were created solely to sell product. That was evident even back in the 1980s.

Yep. Lucas lost his touch, or his grip on reality, sometime around 1982-83. Went from American Graffiti(1973), Star Wars(1977), Empire Strikes Back(1980), Raiders of the Lost Ark(1981) to Return of the Jedi(1983), Temple of Doom(1984), multiple Ewok spin-offs(1985-86), and Captain EO(1986). That is quite a fall from grace. Those before 1982 = American classics. Those after = confessions of a troubled mind. My guess is cocaine was the culprit, and that he got sober sometime in the late 80s, and managed to churn out a few more American classics in Willow(1988) and Last Crusade(1989), before falling off the wagon for good, with Beverly Hills Cop III(1996?) as his high-point since before the beginning of the Clinton presidency until now. His greatest achievement later in his life has been to hand the reigns to someone capable. Still, whoever above said Attack of the Clones is superior to Return of the Jedi is out of their mind.

What about his buddy Francis Ford Coppolla's downfall?

(Speaking of which, I finally saw Godfather III in the past year or so, and it wasn't that bad. Though, as some have said, Al Pacino is playing Al Pacino as Michael Corleone.)

Too bad a Bay Area guy like Lucas, who grew up watching KRON, is a USC alum. Hopefully the Trojans won't get a big chunk of his fortune.

Lucas handed off the Star Wars franchise, yes. But it was more in a passive aggressive way.

I highly recommend the Star Wars fan film series "Pink Five" (found somewhere on the Internet) about a valley girl pilot/Jedi whose story hilariously parallels the original trilogy (and is the true hero of the epic).

That was me. I'm down on the Ewok's, and there's not a whole lot else in that movie. Luke's crowning Jedi achievement is defeating Jabba the Hut's crew. meh.

With AOTC, there's something about a movie with the courage to have its central character that you are rooting for, commit genocide. It's sort of like Breaking Bad to me. Anyway, I enjoyed that movie.

It's odd that Asia and the UK would get it a full 24 hours or more than the United States.

A lot of people tweeting about it last night and early this morning.

I was re-watching parts of Return of the Jedi last night and man, aside from the space battle stuff, a lot of that movie was Ewok fluff and father-son crap. The conclusion is satisfying but a lot leading up to it is actually kind of disappointing. Attack of the Clones though, good Lord that had some horrid writing but does drown you in some decent special effects, so it's a push.

I got duped into buying tickets for tomorrow night months in advance by Fandango when they advertised the 18th as "opening night." I still see the 18th on lots of ads and signs as opening night even though it's clearly not.

My daughter beat me to it and is in the middle of it now. I'm watching Return of the Jedi to get ready for it.

i don't get too caught up in the outrage over ewoks or any of that other stuff. I just enjoy the franchise. Looking to get blown away tomorrow night, though. Totally pumped about JJ Abrams directing it. Big fan of his work, especially lost. Has to be a huge upgrade to the storyline.

Didn't quite feel like Star Wars to me at first because of the camera work, but I thought the dialogue was reminiscent of the original trilogy.
