Not too surprising. Franklin has been vocal about how he will always run "his" offense and it's been pretty clear Dykes has been deviating from it more and more. This is a positive move for our program imo, the only way it was ever gonna work with Franklin was if he was willing to adapt and adjust. Since he (apparently) wasn't, it was him or us.

Yes, and possibly --- and I highly doubt Sonny is this type of person --- to ensure the early enrollment peeps start school before Tony left. You don't want a FUD situation like Tosh caused. That being said, I never got the vibe Tony was much the recruiting type.

Likens would be my guess.

Whatever! I only want people at CAL who want to be here, that covers players, coaches and administrators! NEXT!

I like Likens, but I would be very disappointed if he's our new OC.

I remember a story about his hiring to the effect that he told Dykes his conditions for taking the job were that he be left alone and that he be allowed to run things his way, without question.

Pure speculation, but this doesn't look like it is about money or getting fired to me. My gut says Dykes started getting involved (vertical set, over ruling a play call/decision to kick in a late game last year) and that was enough for Franklin.

Yes, I'll be curious to learn the real story. Blocking scheme? Butted heads when his boss tried to give input? Other? (Only way he is leaving of his own accord is if he has a genuine family "situation" somewhere within a couple hundred miles of Murfreesboro, TN.)

As to negative impact on recruiting, I doubt it's a factor. Their primary recruiter is their position coach and Dykes is still there (and he knows offense).

As to possible changes on offense next year, I'd be shocked if the changes are anything more than "tweaks". Sonny = Air Raid/Bear Raid/TFS/whatever

I actually think this is good news. TF was not a good OC. He runs a simple HS offense (Campolindo's offense has elements of more sophistication than TF's). I don't think his offense works v. good teams. Hate that we don't use FB, TE or throw to the backs.

Actually the timing may make sense. There were a lot of recent follow up home visits to already committed recruits and their family where this may have been confidentially shared in respect to being transparent and answer any questions with the parents being present. This weekend has all the committed recruits not already enrolled, as well as the availability of those who enrolled early, where as a team they can go over any concerns or questions as a group. The real risk will be uncommitted offensive players like Brown who may be looking for continuity of a system that gives the receivers the ability to shine and share the ball. I would think not using the VS would be a positive to those linemen who are also looking for the best fit. Also the caliber of the offensive linemen recruits could dictate that a VS could be modified to a more traditional stance. All speculative on my part and completely wrong.

Reading some of these comments makes me feel better. My initial thought was, wow, how far have we declined that our OC would rather take a gig at Middle Tennessee State. This line of reasoning definitely makes more sense.

Agree. Those were my initial feelings. My only question is whether Sonny or Tony is responsible for the offensive fire power at Cal.
Everywhere Sonny has gone he has had great offensive production (lots of yards and lots of scoring) he also has brought out the best his QB's (regardless whether the were a Jared Goff or QB with lesser talent). Was that Sonny's doing or Tony's doing?

Wow. California's loss is MTSU's gain.

My guess is that the reason why this hire was made was because Franklin has been here before and is familiar with MTSU and Murfreesboro. Furthermore, the Blue Raiders would like to keep pace with some of the more prolific offenses in Conference USA, like their rival, Western Kentucky. The Hilltoppers destroyed MTSU 58-28 back in October, which revealed a glaring difference in the talent level and the skill of both offenses. MTSU wants to make sure they upgrade their offense, and Franklin can do that.

I'm sure the Bears can find a new offensive coordinator soon and not miss a beat.

Forgive me if this link has already been posted.
It also says that he is a native of Princeton, Kentucky, which is 131 miles northwest of Murfreesboro (101 miles northwest of Nashville). His wife wanted to be closer to family. So, it's a surprise, but then again, it's not real a surprise. Can't really blame him for that.

Considering that Tony had one of the best college QBs in the country and could only post a 7-5 season record sort of hints that he wasn't all that good. Changing the Vert set midseason which helped the team get to a bowl which wasn't his idea should support his being asked to go in a nice way.

Wow! Maybe they fired him, but to save face told him to look for a new job...didn't Tedford do that with our longtime DC?

If you look at the timing and the nature of Sonny's response, it sure looks that way.
I'm really surprised, but if Dykes makes a quick hire announcement we'll know this wasn't voluntary.
I'd even go so far as to say this was likely part of the discussion during Sonny's contract extension. One of these things that seems like a "WTF?" but might actually be a sign that Sonny believes the program has more upside with a different spread system. (No way Sonny goes to a pro set.)

But he wasn't the HC at AZ. Doing double duty as HC/OC is a very tough act.

Joined at the hip?
Not really.

UofA's offense under Dykes was arguably better than Cal's under Franklin, and with less star power. Apparently Dykes shared the frustration of fans here with the limitations of the offense, given the talent we had this year.

Just like when all the speculation about Dykes leaving was running through the media. Radio silence on twitter from current players and recruits. Tells me they're mature, respect him, and that he knows how to manage information and expectations effectively. I think he's doing a great job as a program steward, now he just needs some top tier results to cement that feeling into certainty.

Likens may not be that bad of a choice given that he's worked in the system multiple years, has a year under his belt at Kansas, has coach Dykes to mentor him, might come back for less that coach Franklin was making but more than he was making at Kansas (providing more flexibility for say a running back coach), is an enthusiastic recruiter, works social media well, and taught the receivers when he was here before.

Any chance Gould would come back as an OC? Not sure if that's a step down from HC at Davis or not...

He may be a good one, but his one year at KU was a disaster...offensive production was terrible...lost every game last year and it wasn't even close. IDK....would like to see him do more as an OC before we take him back.
