How many coaches are there, though, that would fit our offensive scheme and are from California? I like the hire!

SI reporting the same, too:

GREAT hire! In fact, this is an upgrade from Franklin - success at the high level, great recruiter, potential to move into HC role should the opportunity arise. Too bad they couldn't get this finalized a week or so earlier, but very happy with this.

Go Bears!

This guy must make a helluva impression. Age 30...grad asst. in 2010...OC in 2014 at 28...that is one quick ascension. This is actually a pivotal job for him to keep this trend going. Succeed and he is well on his way to a HC position, fail and it will be two in a row. I hope he is a good coach and recruiter.

I'm good with this hire but find it odd that Sonny went out of his way to say the hire wouldn't be on board until after LOI day because he was still recruiting. Of course, I know better than to expect transparency from a coach but would prefer not to have the misdirection. Maybe Sonny missed on his top target? Looking forward to having another good recruiter on staff. Can't have too many of those even if they are all on the offensive side of the ball right now.

Great news! Spav is a dynamic recruiter as well as one heck of a coach.

He seems to have done well on the recruiting trail, which is great to hear. That said, the data reflected in this chart at the bottom of this page is not exactly encouraging with respect to offensive results:

I imagine he's not hell-bent on the vertical set, which will be nice...

This is an upgrade IMO. Also the fact that he worked with two great college qbs is a good thing. Who cares if geno and manziel are struggling in the nfl, they wre great in college.

I honestly don't have a clue about how good he is, but if NYC is on board, I'm in as well. Go Bears.

Aside from what I'm assuming to be his acumen of offensive football Sonny style, I like the hire from the standpoint of his youth which should bring enthusiasm and energy all the way around, but particularly in recruiting and relating to recruits and players. He should have solid recruiting connections and cred throughout Texas and SEC country.

his recruiting prowess at at TAMU speaks for itself. very impressive hauls under his watch, especially at the QB position.

what do you know--maybe people will finally expect OC/DCs to recruit at Cal?

Uggh. Sounds like the fan reaction when we hired Ludwig. Maybe he learned from his being let go at TAMU to not be so conservative. I guess we'll see how good Sonny is at coaching his coaches.

A&M's mess wasn't his doing as shown in the OC revolving door there - which is on the HC.

Jones has taken over the OL, it's HIS unit and he's no longer burdened by other people's blocking scheme, like stupid VS.

The OL will run block and pass protect as Jones wants ... and he's very well liked and respected ... because he's tough.
Once the VS was diminished, then cast aside, the results have been very noticeable. 2015 showed increasing OL results. Now, with all of 2016 ahead, four starters returning including a solid Cochran at LT, experienced reserves ready to compete, and recruits coming in, OL battles will be fun to see and hear about. Uluave foregoing his mission is like getting him as another recruit again, with his 'shirt year in Jones' system under his belt.

I like the hire -- of all the possible air raid guys out there, Spav stood out to me since he's from Holgerson's side of the Air-Raid tree.

Dana and Sonny have a long history, and I prefer the direction that they have took their versions of the air-raid (namely their emphasis on the vertical pass game and building nice complimentary constraint components to their schemes).

He's a young guy w/ a nice recruiting background (he brought in some studs to WVU, and likewise did the same at Texas A&M).

If you go back and look @ the tape of his TAMU offenses, there's a lot of similarities between what they do, and what we did w/ Tony in terms of route concepts, play action, and RPO -- Spav should be able to work within the scheme that our offensive staff has put together, and possibly add some new wrinkles that will compliment what we already do.

The transition (scheme wise) should be relatively seamless -- the reps we have invested in our Roster will not be wasted.

From watching some of TAMU film, its clear that a huge part of their offensive philosophy was to attack presnap leverage w/ spread formations w/ a mix of the inside zone run game paired w/ the screen game (we were more outside zone / power paired w/ the vertical pass). They would catch teams in nickel personnel, and were able to attack overhang slot defenders in run/pass conflict -- so the bubble-screen game was a huge part of what they did (so the TAMU fanbase crybaby action about the bubble-screen may have been warranted -- but in the end, when I see guys who attack that, I know they "get it" -- Football is a game of numbers and spatial geometry).

A lot of what made the TFS BearRaid great is that emphasized a mix of RPO and Play Action to go vertical on dudes over the top -- which played to the strengths of Jared's game. It's all about adapting your scheme to the strengths of the personnel you have on hand. As far as I can recall, Spav did a nice job of featuring his playmakers, but I think the whole Sumlin-toxic-voodoo action w/ his QB's kind of messed with that collective mojo of the entire TAMU offense.

Anyone know what their QB deal was last year? Why couldn't they make up their mind and why ultimately did both QBs transfer?

I hope we pick one QB in the fall and just go with it.

If you want to get some kind of idea on how Spav might use a shiftier/speed type guy @ H (someone like M.Stovall) -- take a look @ this

& how he might use a big-frame/downfield X/Z guy (like say Carlos Strickland, or Duncan) --

Spav's background says that ours will be Sonny's offense, executed by Spav, and not an offense that Spav might be bringing with him. I'm not worried about an excess of bubble screens (of course, the first bubble screen that gets stuffed will bring out the "told ya so's" like crazy.).

Good to have youth, recruiting enthusiasm and smarts.

PS The Aggie faithful hate anyone who doesn't have them in the playoffs. Look what their "fair-haired boy" did in the pro's after playing sandlot for them.
