As long as coaches can make generational wealth by comprising whatever morals they may have we will continue to see this. Art is probably very sorry. Art will probably not do this again if he gets another job because now he doesn't need to do this again. He's provided for his family even though he got fired after a few years as head coach. It's a big price to pay but obviously some coaches are willing to pay it. Rationalization is a wonderful thing.

generational wealth bingo
The thrill of victory and the "agony of defeat" as a few tears are shed on the way to the bank, or sitting on their yachts, or a year off in the Caribbean, or other life style choices of the rich and infamous (but memories are short).

Saying someone from Texas would prefer Waco because they're originally from Texas is as dumb as saying a random Californian would prefer San Bernardino because he's originally from CA. I doubt kate has any problems fitting in in Piedmont or whatever Country Club Cal paid for.

Does seem like Waco pd sure tried to help them out. That said, I don't think anyone here has.

How about this one: Branch Davidians, biker shootouts, murdered basketball players, serial rapists on scholarship- I am just going to bypass the place in future.

While I think Cal gets a the occasional "hippie" comment, I have not seen much about things Berkeley does being directly tied to Cal, but then again I don't follow these things that closely.

In any event, the program deserves to take a huge hit.

absolutely nothing in that quote places blame or condemns the city of Waco for what happened with Art Briles. I assume there are places you would avoid for various reasons.

great site: two homes intermixed on one sequence; meh staging pics (flowers?) because the houses are nothing ...
Waco metaphor that's says it all.
One can only wonder what kinds of intellectual power is attracted to live and teach in Waco.

Maybe you missed Sonny Dykes and his agent putting his name up for a ton of jobs this past off-season, including Virginia, South Carolina. Missouri and Memphis.

It's called leverage. It is not an indicator of Dykes wanting to be here or not. He got more money by playing the game, bravo.

I work with sales at times and I've found that the easiest way to know what a company is about is how sales is compensated. Sales reps will do whatever gets them the coin. Coaches are no different.

Let's be honest with ourselves here. We can deride behavior all we want. But the bottom line is being virtuous in college sports rarely pays and being scumbags rarely costs in the long run. USF absolutely set the standard for dealing with an out of control program and they've gotten tons of praise from people like me. That and $5 will buy you a cup of coffee and a perennially crappy mid-major basketball program that no longer has access to the big money their top-20 program would have gotten them. How many programs are going to take that route instead of a few mea culpas, fire a coach, wait for things to blow over, and then keep on keepin' on.

Within a year or two, Baylor and Art Briles will both be way better off than USF. As was Penn State. The system doesn't benefit the virtuous.

Wouldn't this be a perfect place for Sarkisian? Could bring in Lane Kiffin and Tosh Lupoi. That trio would clean things up!

... and yet Bruce Feldman has Sonny Dykes on his short list of possible replacements for Art Briles at Baylor.

Sonny Dykes: The son of former Texas Tech coach Spike Dykes, Sonny knows the state of Texas -- and its high school coaches -- very well. He's a good offensive coach and has done a very nice job straightening up a messy Cal program that had all sorts of issues off the field and in the classroom. The support at Cal is pretty sketchy, and my hunch is he could be tempted by Baylor.

I'm sure Feldman would be very, very touched if he knew that you held his opinion in such high regard that you'd quote him. How nice. :p

I agree. I was just saying that now multiple outlets are throwing his name around. I don't think Cal has anything to worry about...

Nice that apparently Baylor is interested in Dykes. No indication that Dykes feels the same way and I sense he's had enough of looking around.

Nice to see the worm turn from "How can we get rid of Dykes?" to "How can we keep Dykes?"

An insult to Sonny by Feldman, et.al., thinking that Sonny would throw away his reputation by going to "save" Baylor.
I'm sure there are some, maybe Feldman, et.al., who would jump into a tub of pigsh!t and swim around to make a few extra bucks.
Hey, betcha to$h would go for it. :p

Am watching Big 12 Baseball Tourney. Just had commercial for Texas Sports Hall of Fame in Waco. Show Tom Landry area, Darrell Royal area, etc then cut to Art Briles Exhibit of his championships at Stephenville. So there is another good thing about Waco. Also There is a very old 20-25 story office building which just stands out among smaller buildings. Was told when built tallest building between St. Louis and San Francisco. Also they have not had a deadly tornado since 1950. Seriously I was popping off on response to notion any Texan would want to live in Waco. The real reason I do not like the place is I spent way too much at a VA hospital there 8 years ago dealing with incompetence after one of boys was retired from Army. I think they closed or are closing it down. Thank God. All good with you guys- all of you.

These reports mean absolutely nothing either way. It is just speculation and since Dykes is from Texas, his name will come up for any job there. Doesn't indicate interest from Baylor or Sonny. Baylor has a coach for this year who they may go and hire permanently. Sonny has a job for this year. No one who matters at Baylor is discussing the job with anyone outside the school. They probably haven't even made a list yet, other than the usual list any competent AD always has in a file "just in case"

If he leaves he leaves. Basically, this board discounts whatever success Dykes has had because of the 2013 fiasco, and because many think he should be able to do more with brand new facilities, the fabulous weather, the academic reputation, blah, blah, blah. On the other hand, the football coaching fraternity, and some of the media pundits appear to overplay the success, because of the whatever they think they know about the problems Tedford left, the academic requirements at Cal, the bizarre relationship with the City of Berkeley, the anti-sports faction in the faculty, the tepid student support, the fickle fanbase, blah, blah, blah. The truth is probably somewhere in the middle, not to be discerned until we either break out into the top echelon of the conference, crash-and-burn and Dykes is fired, or he leaves for people who think more of him than we do.

If he were to add a "Y" after "B" and "U" it would show that he is willing to negotiate with all potential takers in keeping with the SEC's dominant philosophy.

These guys are either moving up or out. If a top 20 program with lots of money had interest in Dykes, he'd be crazy not to at least listen. Whether he stays or not has little to do with the ice cream at Fenton''s

Never really thought of Mizzou football as a mess. Nothing actually happened to the team, made a decent hire and no major defections. The administration in the other hand.
