Was bound to happen. Seriously though.....you think Dykes will seriously consider this? How does he sell Baylor to recruits..he'll be going from a program on the upswing to one that is back in rebuilding mode. I'd be surprised if he wants to go through that anytime soon. Waco 'aint no Bay Area.

i can't imagine Dykes would leave unless they throw massive amounts of money for him to walk into yet another bad situation (and arguably a dozen times worse than Cal's in 2012).

and from Baylor's perspective, is Dykes worth that much?? but he does have a clean track record to speak of..

Doubtful SD leaves Cal for a sinking ship...on fire. Makes no sense. Baylor or a Texas job might be his ultimate goal but I can't see anyone with sense leaving one rebuilding job (in progress and over the bad part) for that. On the plus side, Baylor is a private school and it's in Texas and they take their FB serious...but not now.

I would be totally surprised if Sonny were to go to Baylor.
At some point you have enough money to not make that one's all encompassing first consideration. Sonny isn't ready to retire, but he certainly will be taking his own personal druthers into account AND the druthers of his family, who by all accounts, love it here.

How old is Sonny again?

$$$ perhaps, no state income tax, closer to his family? Maybe not a good career move though other than $$$ at this stage...

From the CNN article, "Donors helped erect a shining, new $260 million football stadium by the banks of the Brazos River"

This is why programs like Baylor and Penn St need to be hit hard with sanctions. The alums will cry that you shouldn't punish today's players for the transgressions of the past. Eff that. Today's players enjoy fantastic facilities built on the screams of women or children when the admins and coaches enabled them as long as they were winning and the millions rolled in. The universities sold their souls, they should be made to pay the price

Nope, not at all. Just recognizing the uDuh is a place that has positions for coaches that need temporary gigs.
Sark's lasted a few years longer than most but ended about the same. Never mentioned JT, that's just in your haid, easy

I agree. I was just saying that now multiple outlets are throwing his name around. I don't think Cal has anything to worry about...

"Despite a contract extension after the 2015 season, an opportunity to coach back in his home state of Texas could be appealing to Dykes."

Obviously, the writer isn't aware of Dykes' opinion regarding living in the Bay Area and for how long he said that was a goal for him. Or the satisfaction of turning around the program in academics, character, athletics.
Or maybe the writer thinks Podunk, TX is the equivalent of San Francisco, and GawdBlessedU is the same as Berkeley.

Baylor oughta raid Liberty U for their coach, as that place has a goal of being the fundy xtian equivalent of Notre Dame.

I think you guys are crazy for saying this isn't a threat. Dykes has a track record of turning around programs in current difficulties (our APR situation). He showed this offseason that he was interested in testing the market. Baylor can offer more money and bring him home. It wouldn't surprise me at all if Dykes made the move.

Maybe you missed Sonny Dykes and his agent putting his name up for a ton of jobs this past off-season, including Virginia, South Carolina. Missouri and Memphis.

Dykes' wife loves it here. He doesn't seem the type to jump around too much. I feel like he will give it a fair go here to see if he can win, and then maybe move on if he finds it too difficult to achieve his goals.

Baylor's been a top 20 team three years in a row. No way that Dykes is in that league if Baylor didn't have problems so, yes, for Dykes it might ramp him up to a higher level faster than otherwise

Let me say up front that I want Coach Dykes to continue on but the reality is that the Baylor change over will occur AFTER this upcoming season so there's lots of time for consideration on everyone's part. If Auburn was a program that Coach Dykes would aspire to, next year might be his only window of opportunity for at least another 4 years unless the coach who takes the position totally hoses it up. Would it take hard work and a repeat of the difficulties he and the staff went through coming to Cal .. of course BUT he might be willing to do it if it's truly a dream school for him. There's also the support staff and other coach's salaries to consider in this. I haven't heard whether the assistant coaches got raises at Cal or not but certainly Auburn will offer a very competitive package for the the new coach and his staff based on the position they're in. This might have some effect on considering whether to go or not. At best Coach Dykes would look at this opportunity to continue to negotiate for his assistants salaries here in the Bay Area.

Dykes talked about his interview with Missouri at the SoCal recruiting event a few months back. He admitted he interviewed, and said that he was a lame duck coach (a year left on his contract), and wasn't sure whether he was going to get a contract extension from Cal. You can't fault him for interviewing elsewhere given the circumstances.

Phil Bennett is taking over the Baylor job. If he does a good job in 2016 then likely he becomes permanent.

I don't fault him at all, but the reports that Dykes was interviewing at all those schools was erroneous, and ridiculous in the assertions that he's for sure gone, and is unhappy at Cal, etc.

Bennett is a good guy who has persevered through some personal challenges. You are tempted to say every single BU coach had to know what was going on , but I am open to the possibility Bennett did not - just can't see him going along with that sort of stuff - RC Slocum/ Bill Snyder protg. Having said all that, he did not win under difficult circumstances at SMU as HC. His work as DC is checkered. You can make case A&M's decline in mid 90's and K- States decline in 2001 coincided with his tenure as DC. Still, probably as good as they can do under circumstances - he will limit number of defensive transfers. His key decision is OC. Tough to find a good one now. I assume Kendall Briles is out. Todd Dodge is at Austin Westlake H.S. and wanting desperately to get another shot in D-1 after his rough tenure at North Texas and he might just take it.

Considering what's in the report, I'd say it's very unlikely that anyone associated with Art Briles will be retained after this season no matter what the on field results. Some of the highlights:

  • Football coaches took improper steps in response to disclosures of sexual assault or dating violence;

  • Football staff conducted their own inquiries and improperly discredited complainants, denying them rights to impartial investigations;

  • Reports prepared by football staff were not shared outside of the football department, prohibiting and hindering proper Title IX investigations;

  • Some players, rather than have their cases properly reported, were dismissed under the guise of violations of team rules and assisted in transferring to other schools;

  • Football staff were improperly involved in criminal and disciplinary matters and reinforced perception that "football was above the rules";

  • The football program operated its own internal system of discipline, which relied heavily on individual judgment and not clear standards, and was inconsistent with effective Title IX implementation;

  • The football program failed to identify and maintain controls over known risks, and unreasonably accepted known risks. Leadership in football and the athletics department did not set the tone, establish a policy or practice for reporting and documenting significant misconduct."

  • The football program, and University, did not properly follow protocol in regard to transfers, including failing to do background checks and risk assessments.

You obviously don't know anything about Texas or Texans. I hope you don't believe all that nice stuff Dykes has allegedly said about living in the Bay Area; that's just spin for the media, the Cal administration, and Cal loyalists. And as far as the Bay Area vs. Waco, the vast majority of native Texans can't stand the liberal politics of the Bay Area or the high taxes and cost of living in California. As much as we like the Bay Area, that feeling is far from universal, whether you choose to believe that or not.

He now has a contract that will renew forever with 7+ wins and decent APR, and he is not getting $6 million anywhere unless he got us to Pasadena or the Playoff.

Me neither. Baylor (like all the Texas schools) takes football seriously. The Cal administration and most Cal students/alumni don't. That difference might appeal to Dykes, as would a potential doubling of his salary and returning to his home state.
