We could have easily never been in this situation in the first place if we didn't squander so many drives. Spav's gotta learn that just because a certain play worked early on doesn't mean that it'll work the entire game. You can't just keep throwing deep over and over again and expect it to eventually work.

Agreed. If offense is gonna be our calling card then you HAVE to take advantage when the defense gets stops and takeaways and we just didn't do that at all.

But hes had four years to build a defense. If you cant even field a mwc level defense then its time to go.

We all feel that way right after a loss, but here's the thing:

It's not that he can't build a defense, it's that we lose too much. If the offense had been better, or if we hadn't given up the 102 yd kick-off return, we win and I could live with the defense if we won.

I think if we can win just one game against either furd, ucla, sc (i know, not happening) or uw and lose the rest and hire a new coach, then the season will have been a smashing success. (I know i know, how the hell will that happen. Well this team has the talent to beat anyone on a good day)

I think the right coach could turn this team around immediately. Theres a ridiculous amount of young talend on the offensive side. We just need someone who can field a competent defense and you tackle, not take bad angles and not over pursue on every play.

Sure they arent the most athletic defense, but its the fundamentals right now thats killing them. And that is inexcusable.

Thinking about it now, if a loss was going to occur early in the season, I actually like the idea of a loss happening right now. There were a lot of mistakes that could easily be corrected that hopefully are gleaned from this game. Will they be mitigated in time for Texas? Probably not.

Hey, if Stanford can **** the bed to Northwestern last year and still end up in a Rose Bowl, why not Cal? :axe

Cause our defense is poorly coached

All Texas had to do is line up in a power two TE formation and keep pounding the edges and throw in some jet sweeps

McCaffrey just saw this game and came all over himself

This is the worst. I'll forgive the offense for not getting that last TD - that's what happens when you replace Goff and our receivers. But it should have never come down to that. If we had even a serviceable defense we win this game going away. For all the missed opportunities on offense, defense lost the game, plain and simple.

I'm frustrated with Dykes. I'd like to see him go, and I've pumped him as hard as anyone. But at this point I feel we are in a better position than 2013 and can find a much better coach.

Barring that, Art HAS to go. Heck, if Sonny wants to keep his job he should fire Kaufman now, to show he's serious about addressing this problem. No excuses for this performance four years in and three years in for Art. Spav seems good and I like the offense but when you score 40 on SDSU you should win by a LOT. I'll give the O credit for scoring bunches on a tough SDSU defense, but our defense was atrocious. Hell, Hawaii last year only gave up 28. New Hampshire gave up 24. So this defense is appalling and "more offense" is NOT the answer. If Sonny cares about building a winning program, Art will be fired by Monday. (I know he won't, which means they might both be out of a job by the end of the season.)

Not a concern, all that mattered was the W, and droski disappeared!

I kept waiting for a old-style draw play with Vic, but whenever he lined up in the backfield, he went out as a safety valve. He never stays in for pass pro, so there's no threat of a draw.

And I don't think they ever attempted a screen pass after the pick-6.

Remember - these WRs are all new, still learning; they'll make mistakes and there'll be a few drops.

And despite the many complaints, the defense only gave up 31 points. Kudos to them for stepping up in the 2nd half, playing with heart, and getting big stops & turnovers.

Agreed.

We've been so conditioned at this point that when the defense makes a couple stops, and we dont win, then its all on the offense.

Sdsu is not good! Their passing game is non existent and their rb is good but nothing great. Theres no way we should be letting pumphrey run all over us.

We should not have to score 40+ points to just stay competive in games.

What makes you think we didn't? Quite sure we offered him, and as I recall, especially with the Troy Taylor connection, he would have liked to have been a Golden Bear. SD's first season didn't present a very compelling reason to come here...
