In high school I was 6'3" and weighed 165. I was pretty lean for years after that but age caught up and the amount of food I ate when I was young didn't cut it when I got older. In 2010 I was 59 years old and weighed 305 lbs. when the doctor said I better get some nurtitional advice. After less than a year I was down to 222 Lbs. without using any particular diet but just cutting out certain foods, eating less (especially cutting down considerably on fast food) and peddling on a stationary bike. My cholesterol, etc., numbers improved considerably too. Now, 9 years later, I'm up to 255. I probably eat more than when I was losing the weight but I'm also 68 years old. I go to the gym five days a week, 5 days cardio and 3 days weights and cardio. I haven't lost weight but I tell myself I'm just gaining muscle mass. We'll see. My point is that it isn't always necessary to use some fad diet to lose weight. You just eat less calories than you burn. To maintain a certain weight you need a certain level of caloric intake. If you weigh 300 pounds that's a lot of calories. When I started eating less the pounds flew off. When I got down to 222 the weight loss stopped.

I'm not too surprised:
Quote:

His regimen: "After I got done playing, I stopped hitting the weights because I didn't have to do that anymore. Now, I do infrared saunas, cold showers every morning, and intermittent fasting. I do a lot more walking and some pool exercises. I used to do visualization before games, but now I'm meditating every day. And the nutrition is always what it's been, very paleo: a lot of vegetables, organic grass-fed meat, and just really clean sources of food. I'm looking for ways to feel good and have a clear mind."
I adopted cold showers 5 months ago.
What are the cold showers for? Anything to do with the UW cheerleaders? I thought they were pretty hot!
Cold showers (could, not proven though) upregulate cold shock proteins(they are highly conserved in all cells on this planet) that may(or may not) increase gene pathways that are known to drive gene repair and fat metabolism(as does fasting and exercise). Note, the up regulation of fat metabolism is not to lose fat but to increase mitochondrial density through a process called mitophagy. With mitophagy you may also get pexophagy(recycling of peroxisomes) which is there to help keep ROS(reactive oxygen species) in check so as to mitigate DNA and protein damage. For some people the accumulation of this is called aging, for others it's cancer, alzheimers, blah blah blah--->medicare for all will fix it....

Calories in and out is important for weight loss. But not all calories are created equal - not even close. The blood work of someone that eats a Twinkies only diet at a caloric deficit vs someone that eats mostly plants and animals at a caloric deficit is massively different. Blood markers, mood, do you wake up with morning wood and hormonal levels are much better indicators of health than pure body fat measures. Plenty of "skinny fat people" out there that are pre-diabetic and have T levels that are 10-20 years older than their biological age. Getting great sleep is actually one of the biggest performance and life enhancing things that people can work on. The best podcast on health by far is by Peter Attia - it's called "The Drive" - highly recommend becoming a paid member - the show notes are incredible and actionable

Yes it is . . . because people don't maintain their regimens and go back to the habits that caused them to gain weight in the first place.

That's the hard part, finding something you can maintain.

For the record, I heard from a reliable source (Boston Market) that not only is JW intermittent fasting, he's spending every free minute training intensely in the deadly martial art of Krav Maga.

By this time next year, anyone who dares mess with our coach will be dealt with in a brutally efficient manner.

Cal fan base is eclectic - and we usually make fun of the knuckle-dragging SEC fans that have nothing else in their life but college football. Are you looking for a bunch of cheerleader post? Here you go.

Cal is definitely going to the Rose Bowl! Our D will probably not give up another point this year! I wonder what Wilcox has planned for Clemson? Can Weaver win the Heisman?

Seriously, what exactly do you want to hear? Whatever it is start your own thread. Problem solved.

I have zero problems with this thread... if it were on the OT boards. This is a Cal Football Board, to discuss Cal Football. Honestly, it's deflating that this topic is what some of you would come here for.

Doesn't really matter how you do it, if you don't consume more calories than you burn, you'll maintain your weight.

People are just really bad at calculating those things, if they are trying to do it without some tool.

Actually, it does matter. Some recent research shows that 2 people eating exactly the same food and exactly the same calories will experience different results if one eats all that food in a 6 or 8 hour window versus the other eating throughout the day. The 6 or 8 hour window person loses more weight.
Small correction, the windowed eating person loses more fat.

Losing fat is great and all, but cumulative periods of fasting is said to promote health benefits beyond just weight loss. Apologies if it sounded like I was promoting a fat shaming agenda. Not my intent. It's just that I noticed that J Wilcox was skinny. While most player coaches aren't necessarily obese, very few are skinny.

It's been demonstrated that while fasting, you're fooling your body into thinking that it is entering a starvation period(note, not eating for 16-20 hours is not starving). A whole host of BDNF's(brain derived neutrotophic factors) is produced to increase neural plasticity and heighten cognition abilities. (You know, so you and your fellow primates can figure out how to find food) This is why all the major religions have promoted it since the history of man. Allows you to see the light. But if that light that one sees permits you to out think your coaching peers, why not?

It's a thing with a grain of truth to it that gets blown out of proportion by people who want to believe weight loss is impossible.

The body DOES try to stay at its current weight. I know that when I first started losing weight I was getting ravenously hungry within the first week or so, even though I'd hit my calorie limit for the day. Then my body adjusted to the new normal and got used to the smaller daily calorie amount. Now if I try to eat like I used to when I was almost 270 pounds, I feel like crap. And yes, that's an anecdotal personal example, but I've seen a lot of such stories from other people online (not paid ads, just random people on message boards). That's what happens: it's very hard at first, but it gets easier if you stick with it. There will be plateaus, but over the long run the calorie reduction works.

Psychological factors are another matter. Some people have all kinds of other associations with food that are hard to break. But I'd argue that's the brain more so than the body that's making weight loss hard. I've seen some of the articles where people claim they now eat less than 1000 calories a day and still can't lose weight. I suppose it's possible that such genetic abnormalities exist, but in general when you actually investigate their intake you find they are massively undercounting their calories. The issue is psychological, not physiological.
