First off, both of these guys were 4-star recruits - so they have plenty of talent - regardless of what many on this board think. Garbers spent the better part of a year, before Ol' Miss, as the worst quarterback in the Pac-12 - all under the 'tutelage' of BB. He had one good game against the worst - er, second-worst (Arkansas) - team in the SEC - and you call that a turn-around? I actually think Garbers can be a good quarterback, but he needs good players and a good scheme surrounding him.
Modster is good. He throws a good ball, has very good mobility and, as he gets more comfortable, a little bit of poise. The main reason he looked especially good against WSU is that he didn't have someone in his face all night, and he had a running game to make his life easier.
The WSU defense is bad - historically bad - and we only managed to score 30 points against them. Make no mistake about it, we won the game because our defense held a potent offense to one meaningful touchdown. Giving BB credit for 'turning around' any of our quarterbacks is absolutely ridiculous. It was one game where we had a modicum of success - that's it.
The bolded above is false.PtownBear1 said:

Good game, but are there seriously people still advocating for our OC when we've consistently had the worst offense among Power 5 teams? Wow. Hope you folks don't run companies.

This season, Colorado only scored 10 against WSU. Oregon's offense also scored less than Cal's offense against WSU (Ducks got a pick six contributing to their total of 37).
Your points about the Cougs' defense being bad or Baldwin's track record at Cal being bad are reasonable and don't need bad info to support them.
And wasn't it reported here that his wife/family moved back up the the Pacific NW? I'd say that is a strong argument for him not staying. I think the alternatives are:LACalFan said:

My mistake, I must have transposed the CU WSU score when looking at UW's schedule. So we didn't have the worst in conference offensive performance, and may even have been about average when you break it down further as you did above, although turnovers would also need to be factored in if diving deeper.OneKeg said:The bolded above is false.PtownBear1 said:

I do agree we shouldn't overreact to one pretty good offensive game when Baldwin's body of work at Cal has been terrible. But facts matter and this is how BS gets spread.
* Colorado only scored 10 against WSU this season.
* In addition, if you want to just talk about the offense only, Oregon's offense scored 30 or 29 against WSU this season - exactly how many depends how you count the ensuing 2-point conversion on the defensive TD by the Ducks.
Cougs defense against Pac-12 opponents this season:
1. UCLA's offense scored 53 (+14 from special teams = 67) in a 63-67 WSU loss.
2. Utah's offense scored 38 in a 13-38 WSU loss.
3. ASU's offense scored 38 in a 34-38 WSU loss.
4. Colorado's offense scored 10 in a 41-10 WSU win.
5. Oregon's offense scored 29 or 30 (+7 or 8 from defense depending how you count it) in a 35-37 WSU loss.
6. Cal's offense scored 33 (would have been 35 except for Cal's special teams failure on the first extra point, without which Bears wouldn't have gone for 2 later) in a 20-33 WSU loss.
This was a good win. Cal was in a rut and many were predicting 4-8. Cougs were favored by 7.5.
(Yes, again, pretty good offensive performance does not make up for Baldwins nearly 3-year poor track record at Cal).
In fairness, as a "math teacher," you should know we scored 33, not 30, and it would have been 35 had our kicker not sh-t the bed (that's not on Baldwin, btw). We easily could have scored at least 49 had receivers not dropped passes or Modster missed 2 wide open receivers. Again, that's not on BB, who called perfect plays in those instances.MathTeacherMike said:Are you kidding? 'turned them around?'GivemTheAxe said:Another Bear said:

Agree that we need to beat Stanford. As for coaches who never beat 'furd, there's Bruce Snyder who was otherwise pretty strong.Cal Strong! said:

Cal no weak. JW and BB need to beat stanfurd to save jobs. Otherwise, Cal Strong call for them to be fired. Too many losses in year 3. Cal need a strong coach who can beat stanfurd every year and eventually lead us to Rose Bowl.

Oh, I'm pretty sure the AD doesn't care at all if Cal Strong calls for them to be fired or not. Especially since JW has an extension through 2023.

It just feels out of bounds to be talking about a staff member's private life. If the speculation is my observation, he might want to stay, if given the choice. North Texas is #83 giving up 5.9 yards per play
WSU is #116 giving up 6.5 yards per play. Their DC quit/was fired a month ago. This was the fewest points they have surrendered to a PAC-12 opponent.
We averaged 5.9 yards per play against UC Davis.
The WSU defense is as weak as we have faced AND the play calling was MUCH better last night. Both can be true.
