I poked over to Cougcenter.com to see what their fans were saying, came across an interesting bit that we'll relate to. They were talking about possible HC candidates and Alex Grinch's name came up. (He was the DC that actually put together a good defense there, their recent difficulties seem to be centered about no longer having a good defense). However lots of their fans (including one who purports to have heard this directly from Leach, and another who relates an anecdote about meeting Grinch's wife) said it is well known that Grinch's wife hated Pullman and there was no way they'd return.
And she is happy in Norman?? Yikes!

Didn't he just accept an extension? Does this mean he has to pay WSU?
The message is a wasteland in the SEC is far better place than in the Pac, even if you have to pay to get out.
Let's be real, Corvallis and Pullman are at the bottom of the PAC-12 in terms of coaching destinations, anywhere in the SEC is a step-up.

As for Wazzu, they are kind of screwed, although they were not winning any Apple Cups anyway, so it's a wash really, makes our already soft 2020 schedule even easier.
Except Mississippi. It is only there to make Alabama feel better, about itself.

That was my initial thought too, but I swear about 1/2 of the time after a school loses a "good" coach, they somehow end up in a better position. It wouldn't surprise me.

(I was about to add a couple examples of schools "failing up" but you know how it is; people will argue the example. "You really think coach X was an upgrade over coach Y ?!?!" ).

And yet, players cannot move from one school to another without sitting a year. The system desperately needs an overhaul to permit unfettered transfers......
The Leach extension was a contractual extension that came into place each year after he won x amount of games - I think it must have been 6 games. It was a one-year extension. That is just the thing you have when your coach is looking all the time like Leach was.

His buyout is 2.25 million - which is small potatoes for an SEC team.

He will I am sure be making a bit more there - although he already was making 3.75 million at WSU. So he will be making perhaps 4.5, which is what Dan Mullen was making at MSU.

I expect that he thinks he can recruit better there and get SEC castoffs instead of EW castoffs. Mississippi is a much better-recruiting ground than Washington.

To that end, some years back I looked at NFL rosters, focusing on birthplace, and on a per capita basis, MS had the most players in the NFL. So, something to be said for that the comment...

He won't have to go out-of-state, unless he wants to....

If Wazzu and Miss State just swap coaches, maybe they can work out a deal on all the severance and buyouts.

Quite possibly, but I'll wait to see who they get to replace Leach before writing their obit.
wow, that would have been a good gig for beau baldwin.
I would not be surprised if BB has been contacted.

Could deruyter be a candidate there?
I actually read some rumors that Graham Harrell (USC OC) is interested. That would be a fairly smooth transition offensively for WSU. If that came to pass, can't imagine USC fans will be happy (that Harrell is gone but Helton stays).
It's a promotion with little pressure, why not go for it?
His wife might kick him in the nuts for moving from LA to Pullman, so there's that.

Me too. WSU doesn't strike me as a school that makes spectacularly dumb coaching hires twice in a row. One Wulff was enough.

I would be shocked if Baldwin moved to WSU. He is currently in a situation where he can succeed and then call his own shot regarding his next destination. At WSU, he would struggle (as most coaches have over the years) because it is a small fish in a big pond - heck, even Leach never finished first in the North Division during his tenure there....

This reminds me of Larry Smith going from AZ to USC. That move reinforced the notion of a pecking order of teams within the conference. Now, in the bigger picture, this move reinforces the notion of a pecking order among conferences - the SEC just took another step forward while the P12 took another step back....

That's a bit deceptive. Our coaches can fly Business Select on flights longer than 13 hours.

I suppose my opinion of BB is higher than most here, especially as a HC. I get that...

About an hour and 30 minutes away from EWU, I'm sure BB would be interested, and I imagine the feeling is mutual. We shall see.

But seriously, Dykes was flown here in a private plane. I can't find the video or images. And there was no crowd.

Serious question: How did Wilcox get to Berkeley?

(I've posted this video, even though it doesn't show the plane.)

Guaranteeing him a seat would be an accomplishment on BART.

I'm surprised people don't mention this more often. There's definitely a pecking order in the minds of most (if not all) college FB fans and it becomes clear whenever a coach or a player picks a school lower on that ladder than the ones they turn down.

Funniest example of all time of the above:

This reminds me of an Alabama fan that posted for like a year and a half on another Cal board over and over that Cal destroyed Keenan Allen's career by promising he could play wide receiver instead of safety at Alabama and that Keenan was an NFL safety but would never amount to anything at wide receiver.

I also find myself LMFAO'ing whenever we get into these P12 vs SEC "debates", which reduce to...

P12: "The SEC states are crapholes."
SEC: "The P12 states are crapholes for people who are serious about college FB."

I propose that the halftime entertainment at the first P12 vs SEC Vegas Bowl be two fans having a proper debate over these fine points.
