" Best matchups:

No. 11 Michigan State vs. No. 11 UCLA: The Spartans and Bruins will play in Purdue's Mackey Arena to conclude Thursday night' play-in games. Safe to say this is one of the best "First Four" matchups ever.

No. 5 Villanova vs. No. 12 Winthrop: This will be a popular upset pick for good reason. The Wildcats are without star point guard Colin Gillespie and the Eagles are an impressive 23-1.

No. 8 Loyola Chicago vs. No. 9 Georgia Tech: The Ramblers have the nation's best defensive rating, while the Yellow Jackets have lots of momentum after winning the ACC Tournament.

No. 12 UCSB vs. No. 5 Creighton: The Gauchos are one of the most talented mid-majors, and the Blue Jays may still be licking their wounds after losing big to Georgetown in the Big East title game.

No. 13 Ohio vs. No. 4 Virginia: The Bobcats have a stud point guard and nearly beat Illinois. Meanwhile, the Cavaliers won't arrive in Indy until Friday, with most of the roster in quarantine.

1-10: 1. Gonzaga, 2. Baylor, 3. Illinois, 4. Michigan, 5. Alabama, 6. Ohio State, 7. Iowa, 8. Houston, 9. Arkansas, 10. West Virginia

11-20: 11. Texas, 12. Kansas, 13. FSU, 14. Purdue, 15. Oklahoma State, 16. Virginia, 17. Creighton, 18. Villanova, 19. Tennessee, 20. Colorado

21-30: 21. USC, 22. Texas Tech, 23. BYU, 24. San Diego State, 25. Oregon, 26. UConn, 27. Clemson, 28. Florida, 29. LSU, 30. Loyola Chicago

31-40: 31. UNC, 32. Oklahoma, 33. Missouri, 34. Georgia Tech, 35. Wisconsin, 36. Maryland, 37. Virginia Tech, 38. VCU, 39. St. Bonaventure, 40. Rutgers

41-50: 41. Syracuse, 42. Utah State, 43. Michigan State, 44. UCLA, 45. Wichita State, 46. Oregon State, 47. Georgetown, 48. Drake, 49. Winthrop, 50. UC Santa Barbara

51-60: 51. Ohio, 52. North Texas, 53. Liberty, 54. UNC Greensboro, 55. Abilene Christian, 56. Morehead State, 57. Colgate, 58. Eastern Washington, 59. Grand Canyon, 60. Cleveland State

61-68: 61. Oral Roberts, 62. Iona, 63. Drexel, 64. Hartford, 65. Mount St. Mary's, 66. Texas Southern, 67. Norfolk State, 68. Appalachian State." Axios

Give Shantay a break. He has said leaving Cal was the worst decision he has made and he regrets it. I recall a 40 foot heave at usc which won the game for us.

For a supposedly terrible conference the Pac 12 got a decent number of teams into the Dance. Hopefully a couple make a decent run.

His 3 point shooting percentage had to be at least 90% in garbage time (when Cal was down 20). I never forgot the game where Matt Barnes knocked Legans unconscious and concussed him. He should have sued him for that.

Actually, ShanTay was pure money when left wide open. The best I can recall in a Cal uni. Problem was his lack of size and quickness forced him to take shots from further and further out when guarded.

Shantay was an okay PG for us... and we didn't get his senior season. He would've helped us this year, for sure: 25 mpg for him and 15 for Joel Brown. Nice complimentary skills. Mix and match. I remember him being very upbeat and outgoing with his team mates. Not surprised he's a coach.

I believe it was a friend of the family "Uncle", but yeah, that was the story. He (and his mother) also wasn't happy about losing minutes to a walk-on, and reports were he was getting schooled by the incoming Midgley in the summer. IIRC, ShanTay's (his preferred spelling) timing to bolt from Cal was not good.

It was Ray Lopes. He was sort of Shantay's father figure as his coach growing up in AAU ball in the Santa Barbara (Goleta?) area.

A.J Diggs was the walk-on?

I was fine with Midgley getting the job as a freshman instead of a would be senior Legans with Diggs as his backup. Midgley was an upgrade. I would have been fine with Donte Smith getting some minutes behind him too, but that never happened.

It is interesting that two of our guards from those teams, Legans and Gates, now are coaching teams that won their conference and are now in the Tournament.

Isn't it interesting that many commentators favor "free agency" for college players in general but are critical when one of their own (Legans, Sueing, Vanover et al) choose to exercise that option. I didn't like it when these transfers happened but, clearly, they worked out for Sueing and Vanover who are in the tournament on good teams but would likely be watching on TV with the rest of us had they stayed at Cal. There's no question in my mind that Cal would have been better if we could have retained these guys but maybe not enough so to make the tournament. In any event, it's a different ethos these days from what I grew up with and there is less emphasis on "finish what (where) you start". Our biggest issue is that we.ve been net losers in the transfer process recently.

I'm not sure who those commentators are. Personally, I am not in favor of players or programs breaking their commitments. Transferring out because the coach has left or been fired is different than leaving because you want to ditch your teammates to go play for a family friend, IMO.

"Made the Tournament and maybe had a run" is a very bold prediction. I wish we had a way to test it.

I do think that the talent Wyking left Fox was a lot better than Fox's apologists keep asserting. It was Fox's first job to recruit them and convince them to stay. Not sure which three on the current roster we wouldn't have (the transfers?) if we had those three.

Personally, I think with those three added we would be Stanford under Haase, talented players with no discernible offensive strategy other than let your best players take their guy off the dribble while you yell at them to play harder on defense.

Since I usually watch every Sweet 16 game (well, except to the extent they overlap, in which case I might be switching back and forth), I say "I guess I'll watch" because unless the idea of watching those two makes me avoid the game, I'll watch. We'll see if and when the time comes.

I always felt that of the two, Midgley was the better shot and better defender, but Legans was the better point guard. Legans' junior year was his least productive, while Midgley's first year might have been his best at least in terms of shooting accuracy. At the time, I was sorry to see Legans go, but Midgley worked out quite well for us. Still, I would have like to have seen them duke it out for playing time. Not only that, but Legans would have been a far better backup PG to Diggs, a good defender, but a one tool player.

Both Legans and Midgley benefitted their frosh years shooting percentage-wise where they only took open threes. I watched Midgley play some in HS where he ran the point very aggressively but dialed it way down and played much more under control his frosh season at Cal. It's hard to imagine Legans as the better pg as his first two seasons at Cal were basically walking the ball upcourt and passing around the perimeter for most of the shot-clock. He did run a nice fast-break on occasion though.

I remember watching Midgley one summer when Modesto Christian went up against Lebron James, Powe, Kately, Ubaka, and the rest of the Oakland Soldiers. Ubaka and another future Div I guard (can't remember his name) pretty much doubled and bird-dogged Midgley the whole game and the kid managed to hold his own, breaking Ubaka's ankles on more than one occasion. The worst thing that happened to Midgley was the McD All-American Ubaka coming in and being given the pg reigns from day-1 and having to slide over to the 2. RM was much more effective player with the ball in his hands, IMO.

Yeah, on paper Ubaka at the 1 and Midgley at the 2 makes sense. Seemed like it would be a great backcourt. Midgley just never adjusted to not having the ball in his hands.
