The season began with a whimper, ended with a whimper, and next season promises more of the same. Nobody cares though, so we get what we deserve.

The season began with us losing to UC San Diego at home.
Yes, it's a great indication, although nothing we didn't already know, that Cal basketball can be summarized as any number of choice words and phrases.

An online petition won't do squat. Only thing that would be productive is if the largest donors to Cal athletics put up the money to buy out Fox.

They'd get it done.

Or, going back farther, Rickie Hawthorne and Connie White.

You're probably right, but I think there's potential for the local media to pick it up and once it's in the news, it could force the administration's hand. And it hardly takes any time to setup so there's no downside. I would kick it off, but don't want my name out there publicly as the leader of this movement. Hopefully, there's someone out there who wouldn't mind starting it though

I wouldn't underestimate Knowlton's reaction to this petition. He seems so indecisive that it could convince him to make a change. That Chronicle article was odd and seemed like a PR move to gauge public/fan sentiment. Which, like the state of the program, is sad.

Basically, a non-reaction to keep the status quo, or does he not mind empty arenas?

An on-line petition is good. I will sign and share. I also think taking the time to write a personal letter on real stationary, hand addressed and stamped might get a look. I must search for his actual address.
I labor under the illusion that I have some power.

Cal's basketball program is as bad as at any time I can remember in the last 30 years - maybe longer.

It might not be Fox's fault, but he's not showing any signs of being able to turn it around either.

Let's give someone else a shot.

Gotcha stu....Came in the Fall of '59 after two Final Four runs, one win. A bad loss then was to Ohio State and Havlicek and company. Since Cuonzo left, this is "the worst".

Even if these guys arrived through a time-warp, there wouldn't be scholarships available. Fox panicked his first recruiting season when he offered scholarships to four long-term projects. Kuany and Lars have sort-of panned out. Thorpe and Klonaras haven't. Maybe Fox was inspired by the phrase Oral Roberts University has painted on their court: "EXPECT A MIRACLE".

I believe Thorpe (along with Brown) signed his LOI when Jones was coach. With a 3-star rating and an NBA dad he wasn't as much of a project as the international players in that class.

But your point is well taken, it would be better if we hadn't used all 5 scholarships that year.

Makes me shudder to think what might happen if the same guy is running things when these 5 graduate.

Mark Fox, head coach, California

Fox isn't having the best of runs at Cal right now, as he hasn't had a winning season in three seasons on the west coast. But, at both Nevada and Georgia, he was a consistent winner, taking those teams to 10 postseason berths in 14 seasons. He gets the rough-and-tumble world of the Big 12, as he was a former Kansas State assistant coach form 1994-2000 and is a Garden City, Kansas, native. He's the riskiest candidate on the list, given the Golden Bears' recent lack of success.

There it is. Now that there is supposed "interest" by another program, it's the Cal way to give him an unwarranted extension.

Man, you saw the action! I started in '72. Nothing happened my 4 years. As close as I got was the 2nd Anniversary of People's Park Protest riots in Spring '71. A guy in my frat 2 years ahead of me said he took a rubber bullet and it HURT LIKE HELL!

Well, according to this there was a skirmish in the summer of '72:

My first two years I lived right next to what became People's Park, i.e. right at the center of the action.

I saw at least one major riot every year I was at Cal. During the worst National Guard troops with rifles were stationed along every border and wouldn't let anyone into Berkeley without an ID showing a Berkeley address.

During my last quarter there were incidents of cops chasing people through classrooms and releasing tear gas indoors. Many classes were moved off campus or suspended and of course we had no Internet. Worked out OK for me since I didn't get hurt and the requirements for my Rhetoric 1B class were reduced to a single paper.

My Dad took me to the Kennedy Games Track Meet in 1969 when The Guard occupied Berkeley. Yet another event where I thought, "I'm going to Cal. I want in on this sh@it!"

For those who say Fox is a good coach, I call BS. He repeatedly fails to target a defender in foul trouble. Admittedly, I didn't watch all the games this year, but when I did catch a game and an opposing team had a defender in foul trouble, rather than target that defender, he seemed to go away from that player.

In the last game, Tyrell Roberts had 3 fouls early in the 2nd half. The smart thing to do would've been to have Shepherd (or any Cal ball handler) attack Roberts off the dribble. Either Roberts fouls (and Shepherd gets a trip to the charity stripe) or he backs off (and Shepherd gets an easy jump shot)--either way, it'll result in something positive for Cal.

What's more aggravating is when the defender in foul trouble is a big man who's clogging the paint and shutting down Cal's forays into the lane. There were so many games when that occurred, but instead of attacking the defender, Fox insisted on staying away from him.

I just don't understand this strategy! This is not good coaching. If anything it's poor coaching and a lack of situational awareness. A good coach will change up his tactics and strategies based on the given situation. A poor coach sticks to the same strategy/tactics regardless of the situation.
