This is why the playoffs are so fascinating. It's entirely about strategy and adjustments. Just the simple decision to play adams and plant him in the paint has changed the entire series.
So what the griz are doing is pretty simple and I'm surprised they didn't go to it earlier. The dubs like to run their offense thru draymond and place him at the top of the key and let him play traffic cop, while the four other players are running around cutting and screening.
This usually works when the paint is open, as teams have to either choose to overplay the 3 point line or allow for back cuts.
What the griz are doing is just completely ignoring draymond and sitting adams in the key. So essentially there are four warriors running around with five grizzly players to guard them. They can both overplay the 3 point line and have adams/JJj as a back line defense to any back cuts. This has predictably led to a mountain of draymond turnovers as he keeps trying to pass into traffic. And the turnovers simply fuel the Memphis offense. Which results in a 60 point blowout.
Now this is where it gets interesting. The counter to this is simple and obvious. But it's something that throughout Kerr's tenure, the warriors have been too stubborn to do.
All the dubs needs to do is spam the pick and roll with Steph and draymond. Like completely spam it. Like vintage harden. Every time down the floor. Just take the ball out of draymond's hands and just let steph do everything.
If you continue to pick and roll, You force adams out of the paint and isolate Steph on adams. Or if they trap, draymond has a 4 on 3 (with adams out of the paint) which is a hell of a lot better than than playing 4 on 5.
Every other team would spam the pick and roll in this situation. Especially if you have a player like Steph.
But the warriors are arrogant. They are stubborn. They run the least pick and rolls in the entire league. But they way the grizzlies are completely exaggerating their defense to completely ignore draymond, this is the only way. I'm so fascinated to see if the warriors cave in and actually go away from their normal offense. It'll be interesting.
If the warriors lose this game (and most likely the series) it will be cataclysmic. I think it could very easily lead to some serious reshuffling, like getting rid of draymond. That's how important this decision is as to whether to spam the pick and roll. Cause I promise you, if you see draymond playing traffic cop with adams camped in the paint, the warriors will lose and probably lose big.

Since adams isn't really guarding draymond at all, it's been pretty easy for him to just step in and out of the paint.
Little known fact. Since Adams is from New Zealand - he is using three metric seconds.calumnus said:ducky23 said:

Yes, As long as Adams is moving around and gets his foot out of the key regularly, it isn't going to be called, even if he is in the key longer than 3 seconds. He just can't camp out there.
Congrats.ducky23 said:

The Warriors have run nine high screens at Steven Adams in his two games back. Didn't always produce points, but regularly produced a good/great look. Would expect it to be a bigger emphasis for GSW tonight. Here's look at the nine possessions. pic.twitter.com/WQ2pu63Q6m

Warriors -8 seems pretty aggressive. Especially considering Kerr is out and Otto porter is questionable. If and when the warriors are inevitably down 5-10 points in the first 5 mins of the game, that's a lot of points to make up. Hopefully Vegas knows something no one else is seeing

Memphis seems to play against the Warriors better without him, but if he sat entire game till half way through 4th quarter, it would be a big problemducky23 said:

It's funny. I was thinking the exact same thing. I think Memphis is generally a better team with Ja. But I think they're a much tougher matchup for the dubs specifically without ja. Their defense against the warriors is just night and day without ja. Rather than having a layup line, with adams in there instead, it's been really hard for the warriors to get to the rim.
So yeah…in a perfect world, if I were memphis, having Ja just to close the game would be pretty ideal.

This is the best basketball analysis post in a dozen years.
I will watch the game with this in mind.
And it's funny, because the reason my buddy and I initially picked Memphis to win the series was simply because of size. And size appears to be the way they'll have to win it. And what the W's need to overcome.
Thx.

Before the series I wasn't worried about their size because I assumed adams was unplayable. His own coach even thought he was unplayable in this series as he said that he didn't play in game 3 because of basketball reasons (not health)
So the key for the warriors is making adams unplayable and getting him off the court. They need to isolate and attack him relentlessly. They need to make Memphis pay for having him out there. If they don't do that, then you're just playing into the grizzlies' hands
This article is a bit too rosy. The Warriors didn't dominate game 6. They were just staying even with the Grizzlies until the last 6 minutes.concordtom said:

It's great that the Warriors found a way to get past Memphis, though getting 70 rebounds in one game is not something that they can replicate. They are not back to the level of the title years. Realistically, they are a flawed team that has a good shot because their next opponent, whether the Mavericks or Suns, is also vulnerable.

There is no dominant team this year. Anyone can win, anyone can be beaten.
It does seem like the Warriors went to a steady diet of high screens for Steph down the stretch when they pulled away, not exactly what ducky called for but a modified version of it. Basically did the trick, plus Memphis missing shots and turning it over.
