I'm going to respectfully disagree. If a team just gets run over due to a lack of talent, so be it. That clearly wasn't the case this game

What I saw was lazy pass after lazy pass. Absolutely no effort to protect the ball. No effort to go after loose balls. A failure to win a single 50/50 ball. Lazy defense that resulted in foul call after foul call.

I get they're shorthanded. Fine. But play hard. Care about protecting the ball. Don't just throw it around with zero care in the world. That's all about effort and focus and "want to."

Utep is not that good of a team. I'm sorry…but there have been past Fox teams that would've won that game.
Not sure if you can blatanly state that UTEP is not that good of a team. I realize their early schedule wasn't impressive but they're now 5-0, what are they supposed to do?

While our amount of turnovers was completely unacceptable, lets give UTEP a little credit for getting out on us from their end. And until the marathon time out before the final 2 free throws they were 30/35 from the line (86%). Yes, I know they're FREE throws but that stat by itself indicates they have some good shooters. And they appeared athletic and in great condition.

Have you forgotten already the basketball we had to watch the last four years? A past Fox team wouldn't have come close to beating these guys. They couldn't have kept up at that pace for 40 minutes.

The first Fox team (with Jones' players) at the end of the season when they had time to gel. But not in their 5th game.

Post game Madsen was very happy with the team's effort. Said it was much better than vs Montana State. Two or three fewer turnovers, a little better luck on 50-50 balls and we would have won, he said. Insisted this team will be winning a lot of games, especially with improved health. It surprised me how positive he was after all those turnovers and fouls, but I guess that's the kind of guy he is. I think it's good coaching strategy to build up his players' confidence after some tough losses rather than being super critical.

Ducky has it right: these guys have some athleticism and skills, but don't know how to play the game. The lack of hustle and effort is inexcusable.

I don't agree, the hustle is definitely there. The big mistake with them is turnovers. Two games in a row with so many. They are a poor passing team and Tyson tries to do too much to makeup for the lack of cohesion.

So if I'm following correctly, we can't pass, can't shoot, can't hold on to the ball, can't rebound, can't play D, have no offense strategy, and we are soft…..

…..but as they used to say about Charles Manson, other than that, pretty darn solid.

ATTENDANCE

…75 more than at Cuonzo's NIT swan song.
On tv it looked like about 22 Cal fans there. That was embarrassing

I'm not sure how fair everyone's being here. Cal's missing their starting PG, who played really well the last game before he went down. They're missing the guy who competed with Tyson in camp as their best 2-way player and likely starting 2 in Kennedy. They're missing one of their best shooters and depth players in Celestine. They're a radically different roster under a new staff with a revolving door of healthy personnel so far.

They lost to a team that seemed to be pretty good, though we'll see as the season progresses. They outshot UTEP 49 to 38% and 35 to 28% from three. They outrebounded them 31-30 despite UTEP being a fairly long athletic team that crashes the boards well. They fell behind several times but kept battling and tied it with seconds left.

Lots of bagging on Cone but he scored 15 (tied with Tyson for 2nd most) and hit half their 3's including the game-tying shot at the end.

The turnovers are bad, no question. But it's no coincidence that their two worst turnover games were the games their starting point guard has been out. Tyson's had 13 the last two games and he only averaged 1.7 per game last season so I assume that number will come way down.

Absolutely hated the loss to Pacific and the one to Montana State was not good either. But until they get back their injured players and play together a bit, they're going to lose some games like this one tonight. Doesn't mean Madson sucks or they aren't trying or clueless or not playing hard enough or without passion.

What we're looking at his head and shoulders above what we saw under Fox. I'm willing to take some lumps and see how they come together.
Maybe I was being too harsh last night but when the ball is between 2-3 of our players, and a guy from the other team hustles to grab it or forces a jump ball, that is a problem. This happened not only last night but also against Montana State and Pacific.

I don't think having Askew would have made much of a difference on the amount of turnovers. The ball wasn't being turned over bringing the ball up the court. I remember Cone throwing it away around midcourt on a fast break when we had numbers but otherwise, I think we did a pretty good job of getting the ball into the front court without incident. We generally lost the ball when we were trying to run our half court offense. The ball can't be in Askew's hands all of the time nor do we want it to be. I would like Fardaws to give it up to a guard instead of dribbling it up. That was a turnover waiting to happen.

UTEP plays a very physical brand of hoops. They imposed their will on us last night. We felt them. I'm not sure they felt us. Lots of holding the grabbing but you gotta play the game the way it is being called. They have an identity. 5 games in, I'm not sure what our identity is as a team.

We panicked when we had the ball and threw way too many lackadaisical passes. It sure looked like we were intimidated. There were too many times where we picked up our dribble after going nowhere, and were making contested passes. Our OOB plays are no bueno.

My worry is that we don't have enough time to get everyone healthy and playing together. Yes, Celestine and Kennedy and Askew would help, but we had Askew and Celestine for Pacific and still lost, though that might have been the game where both Tyson and Newell sat out most of the 2nd half with cramps. I also don't want to use the injury excuse. That sounds too much like Fox.

I do believe Kennedy is the key. During huddles, he is the one talking to the other players. He appears to me to be the leader of the team. I'm really hoping that helps once he returns.

During Fox's first year, they started 4-0 with wins over Pepperdine (16-16, 6th in WCC), UNLV (17-15, 4th in MWC) and Prairie View AM (14-4, 1st in SWAC).

Now its possible UTEP improves greatly, but last year they were 7-13 and finished 9th in Conf USA.

I think there were at least 50 of us at the game and possibly more but you're right that is not enough. Rod Benson was also there with his brother, chatting up the alumni. He is very personable, honest and engaging. Hope more will go to San Diego State game.

I think there were around 100 Cal fans present.
Besides Rod Benson, Akili Jones was there

That's statistically unlikely.

Ok now you're going to make me say somewhat positive things about Fox…which I hate. But in his first season, they were not very talented but were fundamentally sound. Almost immediately. And he had some decent wins.

Fox failed for several reasons (mainly a complete failure to recruit) but his teams were much more fundamentally sound than this.

I get that this is a whole new team of players and there's going to be growing pains. But you can't just throw the ball straight to the other team. You cant continually reach, bite on fakes, etc.

Authoritarianism can be very effective in the short run, but always fails in the long run. Sure, the team looked disciplined quickly under Fox, then got worse year after year as the talent fled and all joy was extinguished.

Madsen is a teacher, not a disciplinarian. Losing is a natural consequence. Nobody likes it, the players most of all. As I said in another thread, we will see what we have in him. Can he keep this team together? Will his rah-rah positive personality be effective? Does he have answers? If he can turn this team around, his positive attitude will only grow the program year over year. The next ten games will tell.
I agree 1000%. No one is arguing Fox is a good coach. The only point I am making is that, at the very least, Fox knows what basic fundamental basketball looks like. When Fox initially took over (first year), his team played much better fundamental basketball than the previous year.

Its very early (and there's lots of time for this team to improve), but as of now, there is no evidence that Madsen is able to get his team to play basic fundamental basketball.

I believe very much in Madsen. I truly believe he's going to turn this thing around. But right now, whatever he's teaching is not translating to the court. There are extremely basic things that this team is having trouble with; basic inbounding, running down the clock before halftime, making basic passes, boxing out, being strong with the ball, moving your feet on defense, playing with your hands up on defense, stopping your dribble in no man's land, not biting on every fake. These are things you learn in CYO. And its not like this team is made up of a bunch of freshman.

Again, I'm still a huge believer in Mark Madsen. I want him to succeed as much as everyone else here, probably more. But we cannot just turn a blind eye to glaring red flags that have popped up already. I don't need to see a well-oiled machine in the next 3-4 weeks, but I would like to see some improvement in the basic fundamentals.

Madsen does not need to be Mike Montgomery when it comes to strategy. But, at the very least, he needs to get them to just play fundamentally sound.

My hyper-critical comments fell under the category of "venting during the game or shortly thereafter", acceptable on the game thread according to Bear Insiders rule 24c.

But this team has a passing/facilitation/ball-handling problem. It always, IMO, looked to be our weakness, now made even more acute by the loss of Askew. Defense was better last night and needs to continue to improve. It will be interesting to see what Madsen and his staff can dial up. These guys (the coaches) are professionals: They will look at where we're at and figure out ways to make things better. And hopefully that will work!

I was at the game, and I didn't see a lack of desire or hustle. Tyson in particular went full out, and candidly with all the injuries he probably is being asked to do too much. What I saw was some horrible passing, often with guys not making sharp passes or using that weird thing called a bounce pass, and just way too much dribbling and one on one. There a bunch of new guys, they don't really know how to play with each other, or that the other can do or not do, etc. They also don't have a reliable point guard due to injuries. Given the number of turnovers it was amazing Cal came within a second to two of putting the game into overtime.
