Yes. Need to get they hype machine going. I think the students who went to Cal basketball for the first time v. Furd will be hooked for life.calbearsfan said:

Agreed. Isn't that the whole big picture. Have a compelling Football and Basketball program that is Student focused, so they are hooked for life. Then follow up and keep them engaged forever - building a strong community bond between School and Alumni.KoreAmBear said:Yes. Need to get they hype machine going. I think if you bring this to the attention of the Athletic Department, you will find they are in lock-step with the Student Body!HoopDreams said:
We play USC with Lebron James' son on Wed
We play Cal rival #2 UCLA for the last time at Haas
We should be heavily promoting these two games at Cal
funny thing is, it looks to me that we promote games 100% via social media
I get that social media is the best bang for your buck, but I can't tell you how many times I ask people playing basketball in the RSF before the game if they are going to the game and getting "what game?" as the answer
Can't they at least put a changable sign in the RSF and around campus promoting games, at least the biggest games?

While this is the obvious long term benefit of free tickets, Knowlton could give a rats a$$ about longterm benefits.BeachedBear said:Agreed. Isn't that the whole big picture. I would be curious to know from the Furd game, how many of the students that attended would have bought a ticket anyway and how much revenue would it have produced? Also, how much extra revenue was realized by concession sales from students that would not have been there if they had to pay for their ticket? A decent athletic department would have some type of estimate in answering those two questions. My uneducated guess is that at the very least it's a break even result. So why not continue to do it, especially for games against brand names like USC and UCLA?ducky23 said:While this is the obvious long term benefit of free tickets, Knowlton could give a rats a$$ about longterm benefits.BeachedBear said:Agreed. What needs to be stressed is that having a packed student section helps to win games. And winning games brings in more fans, builds hype, builds momentum, etc. For instance, we don't win the Stanford game without the student section being packed. How much did it cost to make the student tickets free vs. how much money did we make from winning the stanford game? Got to put it in terms that knowlton is going to understand.
Q1: 30% more than the number that already has season tickets...maybe.RedlessWardrobe said:I would be curious to know from the Furd game, how many of the students that attended would have bought a ticket anyway and how much revenue would it have produced? Q2: $0. Students don't pay for overpriced crappy concessions food when better and cheaper is 100' feet outside the gate.
The reason to give out free student tix is to enhance future sales.
Good point CB. I tend to avoid the crappy food there myself. And to your final comment, yes by having more people experience a good time, there is a goodwill asset that is being created.Civil Bear said:Q1: 30% more than the number that already has season tickets...maybe.RedlessWardrobe said:I would be curious to know from the Furd game, how many of the students that attended would have bought a ticket anyway and how much revenue would it have produced? Exactly and well stated! I have been pushing the Dept to close up the openings to the inside cafe (can still be accessed by the high paying donors, simply walking around by the restrooms to the exterior doors) which currently take away student seating very close to the court and thus detract from our "home court" advantage. Coach Madsen also strongly supports putting the student bleachers back to its original condition (Cuonzo/Monty years). The Dept needs to understand what supports winning the best - and having students attend in large #'s (free if need be) and be consolidated in one continuous bleacher seating, creates the optimal home court noise/support levels.ducky23 said:While this is the obvious long term benefit of free tickets, Knowlton could give a rats a$$ about longterm benefits.BeachedBear said:Agreed. If madsen is still taking suggestions, is it possible to move the band back to right behind the basket? I think it adds a lot when the band is more involved. Or is there some rule now that doesn't allow bands to be too close to the court?
Totally agree - I am one of the people who do use the cafe, and it is a nice perk, but its not worth hurting the game day environment and detracting from a needed home court advantage, On average about 30-40 people use it (donors related). But it can still be easily accessed via the main hall way with Both openings closed. Surprisingly its not a low cost capital budget fix, but well worth it. The more support/messages to the Dept, the greater the chance of this improvement and restoration to how it was, becomes reality for the next season.HoopDreams said:YES!4thGenCal said:Exactly and well stated! Even closing one of the entrances would be an improvement. Why do a few people need TWO doors to the tiny room, which itself isn't compelling as it is barren and has no personality.
It was a money grab that didn't work
If you want to bring more students, make it more fun and I guarantee sitting there is more fun, shows well on TV and helps win games

Correct. The two entrances break up the main floor student section into 3 separate sections.oskidunker said:
