Monty with his dry humor!
Thank you for posting a fun and informative Monty interview. I am fortunate to know Mike well and am always thankful for what He accomplished at Cal (Conf. Title and winning teams) Attention to detail, preparation and putting the players in their best position/shot location/attempts etc to succeed. Feisty, competitive for sure and a HOF college coach. Always straight forward and His teams maximized their talent. Loved the Mad Dog stories as well!HoopDreams said:

He's right about passing. I scream these sorts of things while watching my Kings during their regular season.HoopDreams said:
One of the best things about Monty besides his coaching and humor was his post game interviews. Most coaches talk in coach-speak during interviews, but Monty would just say it like it is and give real info about the game. He wasn't worried about giving future opponents important info about his schemes, plays, game thinking, etc.
He also talks about the type of schemes he ran would not be successful in today's environment of roster churn (I agree).
I always remember one thing he said that for some reason stuck with me when ever I watch a Cal game ---
you should pass with a purpose ... passing to a player who is not capable of doing anything with the ball in that place is just wasting clock, kills the flow, and risks turnovers
he always wore dress shoes and my brothers and I used to hate hate hate how he would stand on the court and stamp his foot repeatedly and loudly as he berated the refs. uggghhh and then we would often losebearister said:
My favorite sentiment that was often expressed about him here:
When Monty was at Furd he was an a$$h@le that loved to run up the score against Cal and he was a chronic ref baiter.
Then he became our a$$h@le and we loved him.
Speaking of post-game interviews, my favorite was after a game Montgomery said something to the effect of "we've got to approach things with more alacrity" which got everyone looking up what alacrity means! :-) I now use that word frequently.HoopDreams said:

I was a fan of Montgomery when he was at Stanfurd. I hated he beat us all the time, but I always liked him and wanted to poach him back in the 90s.
I always thought Harper Kamp ran Monty's half court offense exactly how he wanted. Ball on the high post and directing the offense whichever way was needed. I recall then Arizona coach Sean Miller said of our half court offense was like a buzz saw. It was a joy to watch.4thGenCal said:Thank you for posting a fun and informative Monty interview. Separate add on to Coach Madsen roster this coming season (and have not seen first hand any of the new players) but there will be some "addition by subtraction" with the departure of Andrej and Jeremiah. I believe winning will become a true priority - vs stat grabbing. Yes sorry to lose such talents, but the guys coming in will share the ball and shoot collectively better. Hearing our team will be tough, deeper, better 3 pt shooting and perimeter defense, but yes, not the top end talent the Program had in the first two seasons under Coach Madsen.
Once I get a chance to see a practice or two live, then I will offer up some concrete opinions.

I especially loved the way Monty "owned" Dana Altman and his Oregon teams.
Your memory is better than mine. Wasn't Sim originally a Ben Braun recruit, but Monty decided not to offer him, and took Jorge instead? Or was it Sim's choice to bail on Cal, and attend Oregon instead? Something else? I think we would all take Jorge over Sim any day of the week.KoreAmBear said:And Garrett SimSFCityBear said:

Ben Braun was competent and a good guy but not as good a game coach as Monty. Whenever Cal under Braun went up against Stanford, I always thought to myself, "We may win, but we'll probably get outcoached."
Yeah, Monty recruited Joge after Sim used Braun's departure as an excuse to get out of his commitment.SFCityBear said:Your memory is better than mine. Sim is still playing pro ball, and has played 10 years for various teams in France, after spending a couple seasons in Germany. Not sure where Jorge is now.
I still love Monty for never losing a game to Altman and Oregon while Monty was the head coach at Cal.
Actually, I believe Monty was 7-6 against Stanfurd when he was at Cal, 6-6 during the regular season, and 1-0 in the Pac-12 Tournamentcalumnus said:HearstMining said:

When Monty was coaching, Stanford usually won, whether he was their coach or ours.
What would you say this?calumnus said:HearstMining said:

Jorge played for several NBA teams for short stints (including Brooklin Nets), in a Chinese pro league, and for Mexico pro leagues, and for the Mexican National team. He recently retired from playing basketball, but does some community coaching and fund raises for a mexican youth programSFCityBear said:Not sure where Jorge is now.KoreAmBear said:And Garrett SimSFCityBear said:
