Yes, if I remember correctly, Quentin Richardson was Gates' teammate, and they won the Ilinois state championship as seniors at Whitney Young. I think there were others, too, on that team who got D-1 scholarships besides Quentin Richardson and Dennis Gates.

Your memory is way too good. I'm around the same age (a little younger) than Gates and I remember Whitney Young being one of the tops teams nationally along with schools like Mater Dei, DeMatha, and Dominguez (Compton). Those schools are still powers 15-20 years later (Dominguez not anymore, though). This was before the prep school era (Prolific Prep, Findlay, Montverde, etc.) that is currently taking place.

Gates only averaged 11 a game in HS. I don't think he was a 4 star.

I think who evaluates also needs to be taken into consideration. Ben Braun, was at best, a mediocre head coach at the high-major level. However, he and the staff that hired were good evaluators of talent. He regularly brought talented players into the program that were not highly-touted. Whether it was Lampley, Ryan Anderson, and others. Then you have late signees like Shipp, Theo, Tamir, and Rod Benson (should have had a better career). Sure, some of his gets didn't pan out, but he had a decent hit-rate.

Mostly agree, except that he was able to take other coaches' players to the Sweet 16 at both EMU and Cal. I agree that he was a good evaluator and was able to get on to players early (add Randle to you list) but he also had a lot of misses and bad luck with injuries that lead to too many imbalanced classes. That, more than his ability as an in game coach, held him back more than anything - at least up until he lost control of the Powe class.

Reading between the lines, Cuonzo had a really delicate balancing act this year. Wasn't sure Jaylen and Rabb were coming back, probably knew Yanni was getting fired, and had to keep tabs on multiple last minute recruits. Probably had to keep Yanni on a short leash because he wanted recruits to follow him not Yanni. Apparently Jolly was a Yanni guy.

Slight detour on Cal coaches granting releases. Cierra Runge was a key member of the 2015 NCAA champion swim team. Wanted out after her freshman year to train with a perceived better distance coach at Wisconsin. Runge was a key part of the 2016 team and Teri McKeever didn't grant her an immediate release. Runge would have had to pay out of state tuition at UW and been ineligible for a year, so she's spending the year at ASU training with Michael Phelps and her former Baltimore coaches. Whole lot of resentment toward McKeever because her teams clean up in recruiting and her training methods are too new agey. Lots of sniping in college circles and Teri's recruiting suffered. Was never able to replace Cierra's lost points and team ended up third behind Georgia and LSJU. Hardball tactics don't always work.

Jolly will eventually get a release, but timing should be on Cal's terms.

Jemarl Baker is a Yanni guy, too. He made a comment to "another site" that didn't sound particularly encouraging. He's a guy we want to keep. Can flat out shoot the ball, even off the dribble.

Yanni was the "West Coast" guy on the staff. He had good relationships with a lot of the coaches and program heads of AAU programs. He had us in with a lot of 2017's and 2018's. Right now, we seem to be going out of state with Martin's and Webster's connections (Chicago and the South, specifically).

Wasn't one of the first things Martin said when he got the job was that he wouldn't take guys just to fill out a roster? Admittedly, I haven't seen Robinson play, but the fact he committed to Indiana St. Does not leave me encouraged.

Might be a late bloomer, Wisconsin is after him too now. Like Coleman, where Iowa State was also after him late.

OAD complicates everything. K and Calipari scrambled last year to get Thornton and Murray to reclassify. Grad school admissions at Cal are tricky, so the staff has to do due diligence early. Gotta wonder how massive the target list is and how many contingencies are involved. Going to have to plug in some spots under less than ideal circumstances.

Unfortunately Cal will end up paying one way or the other. If they slow play Cuonzo, a more attractive opportunity may come up. If he gets pushed out, going to have to overpay for a lesser coach. A complete mess. Would like to see an equitable outcome for both Cal and Cuonzo, but not a lot of confidence in Cal or MW.

Not asking to prove a point as I legitamately don't know, but when you say Wisky and ISU were after those two, did they receive actionable offers?

No offer from Wisconsin yet. St. Joe's was his best offer before Cal.

I always thought it was "Who are those guys?" Funny Cal football-related story: Think it was my freshman year in fall of 1983, Coach Kapp had equipment guys and low level assistants handing out straw bowler hats to each player as we boarded the bus for the airport to an away game. The hats had the words "Who are those guys?" written on them.

Apparently, Joe also liked that scene in the movie.

Let's hope CM can bring this kid in and he is the real deal. Unless the 2017 class is very, very good the Bears will need this class to be major contributors two years from now.

Correct. The scene was - a group of trackers were chasing our two stars, who tried to evade and hide their trial in all sorts of deliberate manner. But they kept on coming.
As someone said above, the line was "who are those guys?" Butch and Sundance meant it as a compliment of their skills.
But I meant it as another suggested, "who is that guy?" As in "who is BBinLA?", a fella with skills.

No matter, keep it comin'.

Kenwood 2016 small forward Nick Robinson is a versatile scorer that is continuing to round out his game. The most impressive development is the consistency on his jump shot. Robinson was knocking them in from all over the floor with confidence especially pulling up off the bounce when we saw him recently at the Bank of O’Fallon Shootout. Can hit it from both mid-range and three. He is very comfortable working out of the mid and high post areas where he can back his man in, face up to take them off the bounce, or hit a jumper. Also sees the floor well and is a better passer than I thought. Rebounding continues to improve as well as he snatches them out of the air.

Did I miscount? If Rabb and Brown stay aren't all 13 schollies taken?

Correct.
As you can see, Cornell has taken the last available spot for next year.
We had one that went unused initially, but was awarded to Brendan Glapion mid-season. He graduates.
We also have a second one available for Wallace's graduation.

Those 2 are now to be taken up by Cornell and Coleman, leaving us no more spots open.
The only way that there is room for Robinson (and another) is if/when Brown (and Rabb) declare for the draft. It IS telling that Robinson is down to 2 teams when one of them doesn't have room available. Well, it would only be telling if you did not expect Brown and Rabb to go to the NBA. If you expect them to go, then this isn't telling. I'm banking on them leaving, and thinking that we need 2 adds for next year. Perhaps that will be Robinson and ?

If Brown and/or Rabb stays, we are fine next year:

PG: Coleman/Singer
SG: Bird/Mathews
SF: Jaylen/Davis
PF: Rabb
C: K/2

If they both go NBA, I'm looking at:
PG: Coleman/Singer
SG: Mathews (add Singer/Bird here interchangeably)
SF: Bird/Moute/Robinson
PF: Davis/Domingo/some transfer
C: K2
