recruiting is paramount. how do we keep baker ??

I'd go with a young mid major coach or a young high major assistant. Both of whom need to be able to recruit and Cal needs to belly up to the bar and build a practice facility as nice as what they built the swim team.

Hopefully they are names not speculated on here as it will indicate Williams knows what he is doing

Given Williams' track record, he doesn't know what he's doing. Likely a contributing factor in Cuonzo's leaving.

Eric Musselman would be my choice. He has NBA experience, comes from a basketball family (he has been coaching since he was 23). And he lives in the east bay.
I watch a lot of Mountain West Basketball and what he has done at UNR is amazing.

I agree with Musselman. Bonus: he's beaten SDSU!
Dream case would be Randy Bennett

Jeff Capel has been Duke's top recruiter for several years. Experience at Oklahoma and VCU. Needs a rehab assignment to beat out Chris Collins in the K sweepstakes. Pair him up with Gates or Theo as assts.

Travis Decuire.
He's a very good recruiter. He started building a good program at Montana. His teams finished first, second and fourth in three years. This year's team was young. Getting Amad Rorie as a transfer from Oregon was a good get - and a sign, again, that he can recruit.

Here's a random name: Shareef Abdur-Rahim. Came back to Cal and got his degree, lives in Sacramento. Current job is in the front office of the Kings.

Kings assistant coach for 2 years. Would be a home-run hire.

If Bennett can't beat Gonzaga, what's the basis for thinking he can beat Arizona or Oregon? I just don't get it, other than he's the obvious local name. It's not clear to me that Cal is more attractive to recruit for than St. Mary's and may be tougher, given the academic standards. I'd rather go for someone outside the box, like Gates, to see if we can somehow break out of miasma we're in.

That said, Bennett would never leave Saint Mary's for Cal just like Few would never leave Gonzaga for Cal. So it doesn't matter if he's your third backup choice if he wouldn't ever be interested anyway.

That CSU Bakersfield coach is looking pretty good. Kicked Martin's behind twice at Haas.
I hope the Bozeman suggestion was a joke, because it should be.

Who do people think would be on a list of potential Bear coaches?
TexWoodyGiants;842819966 said:
Jim Les?
I wonder if Richard Midgley would have an interest in coaching? I believe he is now an NBA scout after leaving Modesto Christian. I imagine Cal will go with a coach with college coaching experience. I thought Travis Decuire would have been a good choice when Martin got the job.

More like a Half-Court shot. A low percentage hire. Hasn't been a head coach anywhere, no info known about his recruiting ability, or ability to run a program.

Who I want: Larry K. Send Monty to recruit him.
Who I think we get: an elevated current assistant. In fact, I think the only one going with Martin will be the strength coach. We do save the recruiting class.
I like the idea of Gates, I just don't think it will happen.

WIF, I am with you. Let's make a run at Larry K.
Larry K. is a good coach. I was at the Pac-12 Tournament in Vegas four years ago when Larry K.'s lesser talented team beat Monty's more talented team.
Let's hope MW already has a short list ready.
Go Bears!

Why would Larry K leave a program that has recently been better than Cal's for Cal?
grandmastapoop;842820058 said:
Plenty of reasons. Maybe he feels he's maxed out what he can do at Utah and sees a higher ceiling at Cal. Maybe he hates SLC and likes the Bay.
