I'd go with a young mid major coach or a young high major assistant. Both of whom need to be able to recruit and Cal needs to belly up to the bar and build a practice facility as nice as what they built the swim team.

Jeff Capel has been Duke's top recruiter for several years. Experience at Oklahoma and VCU. Needs a rehab assignment to beat out Chris Collins in the K sweepstakes. Pair him up with Gates or Theo as assts.

Cal Aquatics raised the $s and did the deal themselves. Won't get vetoed if hoops donors go the same route.

Hopefully they are names not speculated on here as it will indicate Williams knows what he is doing

Given Williams' track record, he doesn't know what he's doing. Likely a contributing factor in Cuonzo's leaving.

You didn't like the Dykes firing and Wilcox hiring? That gives me hope.

Eric Musselman would be my choice. He has NBA experience, comes from a basketball family (he has been coaching since he was 23). And he lives in the east bay.

I watch a lot of Mountain West Basketball and what he has done at UNR is amazing.

Did you really mean "has been in coaching since he was 23"? Or, rather, "has had 23 different jobs since he's been in coaching"?

Fwiw Eric Mussleman makes pennies at Nevada.

I agree with Musselman. Bonus: he's beaten SDSU!

Dream case would be Randy Bennett

Yuk, Bennett would be my third backup guy... my "safety school".

Don't ask me who my top guys would be, 'cause I don't know, but I know a backup when I see one.

Travis Decuire.

He's a very good recruiter. He started building a good program at Montana. His teams finished first, second and fourth in three years. This year's team was young. Getting Ahmaad Rorie as a transfer from Oregon was a good get - and a sign, again, that he can recruit.

Capel is the designated successor to Coach K, and while he may not be up to par with what is expected for whoever coaches Duke after Coach K leaves, he gains nothing by going to another school for a few years, and would just undermine himself in his path to replacing Coach K.

Decuire had Rorie committed and signed to Cal. That he got him at Montana wasn't some stellar recruiting job by him.

Here's a random name: Shareef Abdur-Rahim. Came back to Cal and got his degree, lives in Sacramento. Current job is in the front office of the Kings.

Kings assistant coach for 2 years. Would be a home-run hire.

Correction - apparently he got sick of the Kings disfunction. He now works for the NBA league office.

More like a Half-Court shot. A low percentage hire. Hasn't been a head coach anywhere, no info known about his recruiting ability, or ability to run a program.

If Bennett can't beat Gonzaga, what's the basis for thinking he can beat Arizona or Oregon? I just don't get it, other than he's the obvious local name. It's not clear to me that Cal is more attractive to recruit for than St. Mary's and may be tougher, given the academic standards. I'd rather go for someone outside the box, like Gates, to see if we can somehow break out of miasma we're in.

Bennett has beaten Gonzaga. He swept Gonzaga in the regular season just last year. So not sure what you're getting at. And if you think it would be easier to get an Ivan Rabb or Jaylen Brown to Saint Mary's than a Cal ... Regardless of academic issues, almost all big-time recruits will pick a Power 5 over a mid-major any year with all things being equal (i.e. scholarships to both schools, doesn't feel strongly or feels just as strongly for both coaches, both in the same overarching metropolitan area so you're not comparing Seattle to Manteca, etc).

That said, Bennett would never leave Saint Mary's for Cal just like Few would never leave Gonzaga for Cal. So it doesn't matter if he's your third backup choice if he wouldn't ever be interested anyway.

Shareef quit the Kings almost 3 years ago and sued the team. I doubt he's still in Sacramento.

I would like to see us hire someone with either a Cal connection or west coast one. At least that gives us a better chance of retaining them longer term.

That depends on what he's making at St Mary's. Common sense tells me he's not going to turn down a $500k raise for instance when he wouldn't even have to relocate.

That CSU Bakersfield coach is looking pretty good. Kicked Martin's behind twice at Haas.

I hope the Bozeman suggestion was a joke, because it should be.

Jim Les?

I wonder if Richard Midgley would have an interest in coaching? I believe he is now an NBA scout after leaving Modesto Christian. I imagine Cal will go with a coach with college coaching experience. I thought Travis Decuire would have been a good choice when Martin got the job.

Have you seen Davis play? Pretty much the ugliest offense I've seen00 uglier than Cuonzo. They basically all play like Coleman drive the lane and pray for a call.

This guy may show up at the Final Four again this year. He landed us Martin.

Who I want: Larry K. Send Monty to recruit him.

Who I think we get: an elevated current assistant. In fact, I think the only one going with Martin will be the strength coach. We do save the recruiting class.

I like the idea of Gates, I just don't think it will happen.

Eran Ganot, Hawaii Basketball, former assistant coach at St. Mary's. Montgomery's son is on his staff. He beat us with less right?

Webster would follow Cuonzo, I assume. Not sure about the rest but I wouldn't want to retain any of them anyways. A new coach will need to start with a clean slate even if it means losing some guys from the class. In basketball, a team can be built up much faster than in, say, football. Plus, I've been unimpressed with the staff. anyway. S&C has been a huge weakness imo. And this is a very fundamentally unsound team and that falls, in large part, on the current assistants.

Interesting. That only makes sense if it's really means saving the recruiting class. O'Toole's resume looks like he's Dick Kuchen's brother. Jones' resume (Louisville, New Mexico, Pepperdine, played at Loyola-Marymount) I find equally underwhelming. I guess Tracy Webster would be OK, if he's really not going with Martin, although he was with Martin at Tennessee, so it doesn't seem logical to me that he wouldn't make this move, unless Missouri is paying Cuonzo by going cheap on the assistants.

I like Larry K. also, but I imagine from his viewpoint, there's just as much chance of moving to an even better job from Utah as there would be from Cal. Also, not sure he's got enough recruiting chops to match the Xs and Os, which may make him Monty 2.0. If we were going back to the Monty tree, he'd be my pick.

WIF, I am with you. Let's make a run at Larry K.

Larry K. is a good coach. I was at the Pac-12 Tournament in Vegas four years ago when Larry K.'s lesser talented team beat Monty's more talented team.

Let's hope MW already has a short list ready.

Why would Larry K leave a program that has recently been better than Cal's for Cal?

Plenty of reasons. Maybe he feels he's maxed out what he can do at Utah and sees a higher ceiling at Cal. Maybe he hates SLC and likes the Bay.

Maybe he wants to be closer to Silicon Valley so he can finally work for that start up too? Oh, and Mount Diablo has always had a special place in his heart. C'mon....
