Do transfering redshirts count against the limit? There is a strong upside of essentially writing off next year and stockpiling with kids like Ryan and the Dukester and then try to get some impact 2018 Frosh. Solid transfer wins will make be happy (and could be part of the Jone's secret plan laid out in the interview to make Cal Successful in the current environment)
(BTW - which could absolutely work if you believe that some of the kids most likely to transfer have proved, with a year under their belt, that they can handle the load. Here is an interesting question - for a kid with say 2 years done who transfers - will admissions look at JUST the college grades (aka like they do with CC transfers) and thus they could have UNDER a 3.0 in HS but OVER a 3.0 from another university and thus get the green light. Moreover, those kids will be older and more mature than the Frosh of the world - we saw how Ball wore down a bit and how it "hurt" UCLA in the tournie....and of course continuty cause the red shirt got a year of practice prior to even hitting the course....and a year to get used to CAL without the grind of travel if they need to stay back in Berkeley/slack off in practice).

SCT - I'm interested in the potential strategy of somewhat writing off next year, and building towards 2018. My worry is that if we have a REALLY bad year, would that potentially scare away important targets like Jordan Brown? I guess both USC and Utah had horrible first seasons with their last coaching changes, and both Enfield and Krystkowiak were able to recruit off those seasons.

Kendall Smith update:
Apparently, Cal is "in the mix."

more on Smith ...
In addition to posting a .375 mark from 3-point range, Smith averaged 4.8 assists this season. Overall, Smith averaged 4.1 assists over 51 games in two years at Cal State-Northridge. During those two seasons Smith posted an assist-to-turnover rate of 1.6.

I wonder when they're going to start offering some Cali kids. JK.
CalEnviroLaw;842833493 said:
I got the JK part, but my guess is that the staff is just keeping all/almost all of Martin's existing offers open and it seems that Martin did not cover Texas well.
tsubamoto2001;842833496 said:
Why would Martin cover Texas? It remains to be seen if Cal can even land any players from there.

Coach Walker gives Cal a Texas connection. Cannot link it, but it is easy to confirm from various sources.

I'm aware of that. I pointed that out when he was hired. But you stated that Martin "did not cover Texas well". California and the West Coast is obviously the main feeder to our program. If Walker is able to get a pipeline to Texas, then that would be good, but I find it unlikely that he consistently beats out the in-state schools and other Big XII and SEC schools for the best players in that state. It would be great if he did.
