As to Yogi specifically, he and I have had run ins. I think at times he can be a complete jackass. Maybe too many times. If I'm honest with myself, I can be a complete jackass also. However, you don't need to be on my Christmas card list to be a Cal fan. If Yogi is being an jackass, and I happen to care, I'll tell him what I think. If he's not, I'll treat his post accordingly.

As for the post I responded to, and the response I got, I'm sick of the attitude. You see this all the time. There's the "Who's going to the game post?" and the purists come out of the woodwork breaking their arms patting themselves on the back. Oh me! me! me! I'm flying in from Tibet and walking from the airport through sleet and hail to watch the game in a driving rainstorm while breathing wildfire smoke and warding off earthquakes to watch a certain 80 point defeat because no ticket price is too high, no level of commercialization or *******ization of the college athletic experience is too great to stop me from my sworn duty to support the kids. It's all about the kids and no matter the lack of support or the taking for granted of the fan base, I am ever so loyal and if any of you don't see this as the most important duty in your life you just suck and we don't care about you anyway.

I went to football games for 30 years. Never thought I would stop. Ever. Couldn't ever have imagined a guy like 71Bear stopping. Now oskidunker. I know lots of Cal fans that I could never have imagined stopping that are gone. There are tons of die hard fans that were here with me almost 20 years ago and well, it might have been hard, but their fandom died.

And as I've said before, the holier than thou are always such until they decide they've had enough. There is a breaking point for everyone. I predicted this with Shocky and look at that guy. One minute excoriating people for not being acceptable in their fandom, the next minute out the door.

Fact is, the ever so loyal "fans" can sit in an empty Memorial and Haas with the other 3 members of the People's Liberation Front of Berkeley decrying the rest of us as splitters, or they can realize there is a problem and the problem isn't that every alum doesn't feel they have a duty to attend sporting events. So what I see in Redless' post is the usual cycle. Poster starts to get fed up. Poster criticizes. Poster is then criticized for being negative. Argues. Then gets accused of being over the top and told they can leave if they don't like it.

Cal may not need me. Or Yogi. Or 71Bear. Or Oskidunker. But they can't lose all of us and all of the people like us, and that is what is happening. When Fiat is questioning, that is disaster. So Redless can look at Yogi and say "fine. go. I don't care". And then he can look at the next guy and the next and the next. The water is getting hotter little froggies. You want to keep sitting in the pot, don't blame the rest of us when it boils.

Wow Oaktown, your post is way too heavy for me. I'm just a guy who's been a Cal fan for about 50 years (Season Tickets Off and On). I just wonder why so many posters come to a basketball board and then don't really talk about basketball. I'm not "blaming" anyone for jumping ship, I just don't care. The pot will truly never boil. Cyclical history tells us Cal basketball will still be around and at some time they will have a winning team again, regardless of whether or not me or anybody else is "sitting in the pot".


BTW, top priority should be picking up a grad transfer big man this summer.

We all want Cal to do well. And no, our top priority is buying out Wyking and wishing him well. Our next priority is finding a coach that is the best fit for us. Our third priority is then picking up a grad transfer big man this summer.

Koream, I respect your opinion about the coaching, although I'm on the fence about it. Regardless of whether there is a coaching change or not, the team needs a decent big man added next season to make any kind of significant progress in the W/L column.

Disagree about the order. 1st priority is finding a coach. 2nd priority is buying out Jones. Buying him out only to replace him with a mediocre coach would be really disastrous, especially as we couldn't fire the new guy probably in less than 4-5 years.

For sure that's our #1 personnel need. And keeping all or most of our guys (but not at the expense of keeping our coach - that was the very reason he was hired, to keep the current roster and recruits -- didn't happen).

Ok, fine. How does this thing get fixed? Are our current guys going to make a big jump? I just don't see that happening. Are there grad transfers ready to come and make things happen in a major way? Doubt it. Are the incoming freshmen THAT good so as to make a difference? Hardly. At best, with Jones, we are a 500 team. So we find the new guy next year that is going to get us over the hump and back into the top half of the conference. Ok. At least I know what to expect.

I think you're right Alkiadt. The Bear Insider board has become an information post where we can tabulate how many Cal fans are going to throw in the towel at any second. Not sure how folks like you and me survived without this information before.

With current players and staff plus known recruits Cal goes above .500 in league next year. With all the warts this year, they still beat Washington and Stanford. People should just stop the fantasy of "supercoach" coming in to save the day. Additionally, all the talk how we need to go out and get a big and a point is silly: there is no draft, one can't just go out and get someone.

I agree that the current winning percentage is a long way from .500. I believe, from watching and listening to people who are supposed to know about college basketball, that the end of season Bears (meaning the last 10 games or so) were immensely better than the early season Bears. We can disagree on our predictions civilly as a pair of Golden Bears who disagree a bit. Let's remember this conversation next March.
