So wvit must stand for "Word - belieVe IT". Not that I have any reason for doubt.

I'd prefer to be at the point our assistants are consistently moving out to head coaching jobs,
but it is what it is and it's time to move on. Look at it as an opportunity to get a bigger bigs coach.

Well good, Wvit. That is plenty of verification. They may be waiting for $C to announce or to have a new assistant in play and just announce the new hire. Let's see who LG and Co. come up with. I mentioned some names somewhere above in this thread. But I have since gotten an idea into my head about a particular assistant not mentioned above. I'm gonna keep my idea to myself threadwise. I don't want to jinx her.

I can corroborate wvitbear on this, too. It is official, though not publicly announced yet. I didn't ask what they're waiting for, or why, or anything else.

Maybe there will be some sort of announcement tonight at the banquet. If anyone is attending please post afterwards as I can't make it.

Maybe Coach G is interviewing coaches too?

Well, the roster has been updated to show the departures of Sherbert and Park. Still reads 2011-12 on top, but unless they come back :skep: it should read 2012-13. I see another nit. Excuse me while I pick it.

We gotta add another assistant and we should add another player who can give some productive minutes at the 2/3. Stay tuned. Notre Dame is raking in 5 star recruits NOW. Hopefully we will see some soon.

Destinie Gibbs, a 4 star wing released from Ole Miss, is looking at $C, so I hope the coaches have spoken with the young woman about the possibility of coming to Cal. She could play this year.

I also see the name Peyton Langston coming up in conversations for 2014. 6'1" combo guard from Cal Sparks and Rolling Hills' Peninsula High. Bears watching. Hopefully. :acclaim:

Cal needs a shooter scorer at the Wing. Someone who can be a consistent 3-point scoring threat, as well as create off the dribble and finish at the rim. Cal's earlier decision to pass on the 2013 class may may definitely hurt their chances to land such an athlete to fill their greatest need. Of course, Foo could dial-it-up and, perhaps, become that player.

Even if Foo becomes all of that, who backs her up? We need some depth there. Gibbs looks good, but it's hard to get players to come from coast to coast. It was the 2012 class we passed on, not 2013. We are recruiting 2013 now. We really need a stellar 2/3 now to come in this fall.

And let's not forget the assistant. It would be nice to have someone who knew SoCal and the Oregon kids. I wonder if anyone's available. :p

Northern Cal had one of its weakest classes this year. Combine that with Lindsey just taking over an underachieving program and you know what happens. Plus, anyone who was recruited was probably going to sit on the bench for a year. The 2013 and 2014 classes up here are both much better.

You don't just start forming relationships with players during their senior year. Lindsey is already establishing relationships for years down the line. This year only Hannah Huffman was worth recruiting and she verballed to Notre Dame a year and a half ago.

Your point is well taken, but let us not forget that Charmin has been here for a long time and Kai has been in the Pac10/12 for a decade too. Lindsay has been on the left coast for 7 years. Only Daron was a bit of a newcomer and now he's a newgoner. So we were not operating completely blind.

And we can't expect to win while recruiiting solely from Norcal. We really can't get to the upper echelons with just Cali players. Besides, some of the Norcal players from 2013 and 2014 are nationally sought after. And a lot of these young women want to get away from home. Some stay and find the rigors of balancing family and D1 play very difficult. Nuff Said about that.

I hope Huffman succeeds at ND, but they are reeling in 5-star players now and she could end up with very limited PT there. Payne looked awfully good going in but will she get many minutes? I don't know. The only Cal recruit from Carondolet I remember from this century was Leigh Gregory. Seems that if they stay home, they go to Stanford. LG and Co. have to cast a very wide net if we want to stay right at the top and improve with each year. Satisfaction is guaranteed....to stop progress right in its tracks.

Actually, how much time would Hannah Huffman have gotten this year if she came to Cal. Remember, If Johnson and Lindsey hadn't transferred, they were going to be 11 deep.

So I think it was wise to go for 2013 and 2014.

Also, recruits don't come because of the assistant coach. They come because of the head coach. And the type of recruit that Lindsey was recruiting for Santa Barbara was not the same she would be recruiting at Cal.

Probably quite a bit more than she will get at ND. She comes to ND as the third guard in a 3 guard class at ND behind Jewell Loyd and Michaela Mabry. Loyd is rated the #1 guard in the land and Mabry #10 while Huffman is #20. And Lindsay Allen, a PG, has already committed for 2013. Where are her minutes for the next 4 years? Probably not a wise decision on her part, PT wise. And Johnson and Sherb are NOT here. Plus we have 2 guards Huffman would most likely have displaced right away. I know hindsight is 20/20, but even from Hannah's point of view, this can't look that good.

I'm not going to dispute that it WAS wise to focus on 2013 and 2014 last summer. Events have changed and we need to adjust our thinking to maximize the upcoming season. We need a 2/3. Defense and speed are a must, 3 pt shooting is highly desired and an ability to go the hoop would be a big help. A top line Juco might be a good fit here if no top line freshman is available through transfer. A player who has to sit for a year does not answer the more pressing needs..

And I totally disagree about who the players relate to during the recruiting process. If you're Geno, McGraw or Gary Blair, yes, the head coach is the major reason a recruit chooses a school along with academics, location and sometimes legacy. But let's face it, Gottlieb is not yet a household word in WCBB circles. The assistants are often the first contact with the families and continue the contact with the players. They spend the time, listen to the players issues, answer their questions and become the friend of the potential recruits and their families. Which is why the hiring of the third assistant in a timely manner is so important. Let's get her in place and then send her on the road.
