Actually, how much time would Hannah Huffman have gotten this year if she came to Cal. Remember, If Johnson and Lindsey hadn't transferred, they were going to be 11 deep.
So I think it was wise to go for 2013 and 2014.
Also, recruits don't come because of the assistant coach. They come because of the head coach. And the type of recruit that Lindsey was recruiting for Santa Barbara was not the same she would be recruiting at Cal.
Probably quite a bit more than she will get at ND. She comes to ND as the third guard in a 3 guard class at ND behind Jewell Loyd and Michaela Mabry. Loyd is rated the #1 guard in the land and Mabry #10 while Huffman is #20. And Lindsay Allen, a PG, has already committed for 2013. Where are her minutes for the next 4 years? Probably not a wise decision on her part, PT wise. And Johnson and Sherb are NOT here. Plus we have 2 guards Huffman would most likely have displaced right away. I know hindsight is 20/20, but even from Hannah's point of view, this can't look that good.
I'm not going to dispute that it
WAS wise to focus on 2013 and 2014 last summer. Events have changed and we need to adjust our thinking to maximize the upcoming season. We need a 2/3. Defense and speed are a must, 3 pt shooting is highly desired and an ability to go the hoop would be a big help. A top line Juco might be a good fit here if no top line freshman is available through transfer. A player who has to sit for a year does not answer the more pressing needs..
And I totally disagree about who the players relate to during the recruiting process. If you're Geno, McGraw or Gary Blair, yes, the head coach is the major reason a recruit chooses a school along with academics, location and sometimes legacy. But let's face it, Gottlieb is not yet a household word in WCBB circles. The assistants are often the first contact with the families and continue the contact with the players. They spend the time, listen to the players issues, answer their questions and become the friend of the potential recruits and their families. Which is why the hiring of the third assistant
in a timely manner is so important. Let's get her in place and then send her on the road.
