Do you think the Bears winning record so far is mainly due to the influx of talent regardless of the change in coaches? Would they be
worse if previous coach and Grote and others had stayed but with the new players added in?

Last year we were 7-3 before pac-12 started. We didn't win another game after league started. Still need to see how the team perform against better competition but definitely Maggie Li seems to be a good one. Let others evaluate the depth of this team.

Based on the limited sample of 5 matches, we have two starting OH (Maggie Li and Sam Taumoepeau) who can play 6 rotations with Ashley Li as the other starting OH/Opposite). So far, our serve receives have been much better than last year with Tara DeSa, Annelea Maeder, DS Sophia Johnson, and the back row OH playing well.
The coaches have let all four MH/Blockers play, and hopefully, two will stand out soon to be the starters.
Quite the second set against St Marys. 16-0 run. Bears will go for sweep.

In my opinion. the MVP for Cal was frosh DS Sophia Johnson whose serving led to 14 straight points for the Bears in the 2nd set, and then whose serving led Cal from a 14-15 deficit to 19-15 lead in the crucial 4th set.
I thought Cal continues to play well defensively, but offensively we need to reduce the number of unforced hitting errors. Friday, they have two tough matches against Southeastern Louisiana and Texas State that would test our young Bears.

They took away the outside hitters, but the middle hitters had 1 on 1 and a field day. the 3rd set they had a hard time in staying in system with too many poor serve receive passes. thus setting was inconsistent compared to the other sets. johnson also had 11 digs. great playing. Cal's passing has improved alot. Of course their weakness was schmidt and everyone served to her. They can only get better.
For the 6 matches this season, our serve receive percentage is .945 compared to.920 for the 2022 season. Sam Taumoepeau has gone from .921 (2022) to .955!
Also, OH Maggie Li had 16 digs today, keeping the ball in play on numerous occasions.
At times, i thought I was watching the Hawaii Wahine volleyball match!

Although the Bears are 6-0 to start the season I am concerned about the hitting percentage.
Tonight's top three offensive contributors for the match were Maggie Li hitting .057 on 35 attacks, Taumpoepeau .095 on 45 swings, and Ashley Li finished with .000 on 35 attempts.
That rest of the team had 38 attacks. Going into conference play something needs to improve.

Depth really going to be an issue for this team. Thought setting was so & so tonight. . Bears helped out by a bad SM receiving team. Saw the first 2 sets tonight but left after the 1st false alarm. Only playing 3 outside hitters. Need to play others with the long season & need to give experience to others. Btw did see coach Billy Allen tonight.Baygbear said:

there are only two other outside hitters in ava and dejardin. I am surprised peyton is not playing. she has only been in two games. either she is not ready, ( injury??) or coach is going with the two freshman to get them to jell with other team members. She is also only playing two middle blockers, hayden and hamm. scott played only in two games early. the freshman middle blocker played early as well. libero is desa and johnson. does the coach move scott outside? probably not. have to find out why dejardin is not playing. maybe savannah can suit up and play outside !!. Saw Ashley Li vs Southern Utah tweak her ankle as she gingerly walked around. Saw coach talked to her & she probably said she was fine. She stayed in rotation but at some point need to get other OH more involved if something seriously happened to one of the starters.
An early early morning start for Bears - 8 AM Pacific against SE Louisiana who won 25 games last year and made the NCAA tournament. Not video - just live stats.
First set was close all the way - Cal had the biggest lead at 17-14. Cal did service for set leading 24-22, but SEL got 3 points to take 25-24 lead, Cal never regained the lead and eventually lost 30-28.

Also, Ava Mehrten who had played very little in her first two seasons as well as in this season is playing extremely well with 8 kills in 13 attempts and no errors!
Bears win 3-1!
Maggie Li finishes Game 4 on a tear - 5 kills - add in a Desa service ace and a final SEL attack error - and Bears remain perfect on season.

I definitely did not have us at 7-0 to start the season. Huge test against TX State. If we pass this...we probably go into conference undefeated!
Just noted the attendance was ZERO! I know it was early, but ....
Southeastern La. had beaten Texas State 3-2 yesterday evening before playing Cal this morning. Tough turnaround for them. Of course, we traveled yesterday after beating St. Marys on Wednesday. Hope we can beat Texas State this afternoon. Go Bears
