Not a good sign regarding Alex Shakell which was posted in the comment section of the 2024 ranking story (Cal #11) by the admin of swimswam Braden Keith
Quote:

But worth acknowledging that Alex Shackell removed Cal from her bio (though she didn't take down her commitment picture).

Still a year away from signing but Texas's money talk is loud & clear.. I'm just saying.8-(!

Boo Hoo looks like Alex Shackell has decommitted from Cal! Wonder what happened to make all of the Shackells leave.

I might be overly optimistic, but I took Alex's announcement as her sitting out on college for a year and exploring her options. At least, I'm glad that she's not indicting the program or staff in her statement (and clearly tried to do the opposite by saying this wasn't a reflection of her initial verbal).

Maybe she follows her brothers to Texas, stays closer to home, or who knows, ends up at Cal -- she was the first domino to fall (at least in terms of announcing her commitment) with O'Dell, Weinstein, and the rest of a highly loaded class (McDevitt, Scott, Cosgrove, Aquino, and Jia), so maybe she's still interested in building a program back up with the team. But if not -- and not to discount the impact of a talent like her -- hope the future is still bright for the program, what with 2026 recruits starting to verbal now as well.

Freestyler Martin Wrede from Germany (SwimCloud profile, #50 in the class) has announced his commitment to Cal. He's ranked among the 2025 class, so assuming he comes to Berkeley next fall (but not certain). Welcome!

SwimSwam write-up: German Sprinter Martin Wrede Verbally Commits to Cal for 2025-26
Quote:

Wrede's 100 free is the 2nd-fastest LCM time in the class of 2025. Only Maximus Williamson has been faster, and that was in 2023 at the World Junior Championships. Wrede ranks among the top 50 freestylers in the cohort, too.
Best LCM times (converted):
  • 50 free 22.71 (19.73)
  • 100 free 48.75 (42.47)
  • 200 free 1:52.33 (1:38.31)

Wrede will join Caiden Bowers, Dar Lavrenko, Ian Platts-Mills, Julien Rousseau, Kenneth Barnicle, Matteo Palmisani, Norvin Clontz, Ryan Erisman, and Max Goettsch in Berkeley next fall.

Another international commitment in the 2025 class - cheers and welcome to Casper Puggaard from Denmark. Ranked #16 in the 2025 class from SwimCloud.

Camille Henveaux announced her commitment to the Bears last week. Former postgrad Lucas' younger sister, has represented Belgium on the international stage and seems to focus on mid-distance free (2:01/4:17/8:52 best times across the 200/400/800 distances).

Thanks for the info. Do the men's and women's teams announce their respective signing classes like the other sport's teams do? Just curious. GO BEARS!

Perhaps even a "way too early" thread for the 2027 recruiting class lol - at least on the girls' side, a few early standouts are Rylee Erisman and Audrey Derivaux, both competing in the 2024 Junior Pan Pac Championships that's currently in progress...

All domestic recruits have signed and are recognized by the Cal Swim social media. Usually a bit trickier with international recruits as they undergo additional compliance checks, visa clearance etc.

Welcome Casper. After Dare Rose leaves this year, we need additional help in the fly events.

Possibly Daniel Wiffen (Ireland) will be joining twin brother Nathan in 2025-2026. Who is Daniel Wiffen? Only the reigning Olympian Gold medalist in the 800m. He is currently visiting Cal with brother and when approached he told others if he attend college "only CAL" was his reply. The peanut gallery is going bonkers if he gets in because he has swam 'professionally' however that didn't stop Tomac (Cal also) from being eligible this year because he swam in the same professional league!

That would be amazing. If the NCAA allows him to swim, pretty sure Daniel will join his brother at Cal. The main difference between him and Tomac with the NCAA is money earned.

Daniel liked my tweet immediately

The addition of Tomac and the return of Lucas Henveaux this spring put Cal in a solid position to grab another national championship in Federal Way in March, despite their current #5 ranking.

Moraga,
I spoke to the Irish Wiffen twins at the USC meet, and they both appeared excited about the opportunity to attend Cal starting in the 2025 Fall. I happened to mention my golf related visits to Ireland and they revealed they are members at Royal County Down and Royal Portrush, two of the top golf courses in the world. Very well-spoken young men. Lucas Henveaux is also a keen golfer, having played on scholarship in the US before returning his focus on swimming.

Thanks for sharing. LOLz how casually they crank out 8-9k swim, and still have energy to move in, and still have energy for a round of golf, and all while dealing with jet lag.

SwimSwam #13 Elle Scott announced her commitment to the Bears. Breaststroker from Charlotte coming out of SwimMAC, with sprint free relay potential and adding additional depth in fly and IM. Welcome!!
CAL RACKS UP ANOTHER VERBAL COMMITMENT FOR 2025-26: THE HIGHLY VERSATILE #13 ELLE SCOTT

Quote:

Best SCY times:
  • 100 breast 1:00.19
  • 200 breast 2:10.04
  • 200 IM 1:57.39
  • 400 IM 4:14.57
  • 200 free 1:47.82
  • 100 free 49.73
  • 50 free 23.36
  • 100 fly 53.41
A 2022 National Select Camp attendee, Scott will join #1 Alex Shackell, #3 Claire Weinstein, and "Best of the Rest" Gracyn Aquino on the Golden Bears' roster in the fall of 2025. She would have scored at the 2023 ACC Championships in the B finals of the 200 IM, 100 breast, and 200 breast.

Very promising time drops from #9 Elle Scott!

The quoted times posted by HBear above were from a Swimswam article published back in October 2023.

As of February 2025, Scott has improved as follows:

100 breast - 1:00.19 -> 58.56
200 breast - 2:10.04 -> 2:08.62
200 IM - 1:57.39 -> 1:56.25
200 free - 1:47.82 -> 1:46.94
100 free - 49.73 -> 49.23
50 free - 23.36 -> 22.92
100 fly - 53.41 -> 52.41

Elle Scott's 58.56 in the 100 Breast handily outdoes the previous "best in class" time of 59.33 by incoming furd Addie Robillard, 59.53 by UVa commit Raya Mellott, and fellow baby bear Teagan O'Dell's 59.73

Would rank #2 on Cal's All-Time Top 10 list if Scott had swum this time in the blue & gold uniform! (behind Ema Rajic's 58.45 set back in 2021)

Elle Scott Breaks National High School Record in 100 Breaststroke at North Carolina State Meet

https://swimswam.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/478065276_18453705172068893_8480726176837824805_n.jpeg

"US Junior National Team member Elle Scott was the star of the meet, setting a new National Record for independent high school swimmers in the 100 breaststroke final.

She swam 58.56 in prelims to break the record before marking 58.93 in finals at the end of a long day of racing, with both prelims and finals coming on the same day.

Her heats swim broke the record that was set in 2018 by Alex Walsh of Harpeth Hall School in Nashville, done when she was just a sophomore.

She also picked up wins at the meet as the breaststroke leg of Charlotte Country Day's 200 medley relay, where she split 27.42 on the breaststroke leg.

Scott also won the 200 IM in 1:56.60, and anchored the winning 400 free relay at the end of the meet with a 48.87 closing split.

Scott is committed to swim at Cal next season and is already almost a second clear of the Golden Bears' best breaststroker this season Margaux McDonald, who swam 59.53 at ACCs last week."

==========

Men:

"With Ravenscroft and Charlotte Latin the heavy favorites on paper, whichever team won the boys' 400 free relay would take the meet.
The two teams used very different lineup strategies. Ravenscroft led off with their best, Mattaus Rammel, and jumped out to a big lead. Charlotte Latin did just enough to give their best swimmer, Junior National Team member Norvin Clontz, a shot at the end.
But ultimately, Ravenscroft senior Drew Davis, racing from the front, had just enough to hold off Clontz's 44.58 split at the touch.

Charlotte Latin started the meet off with a win in the 200 medley in 1:32.07, with a team of David Sammons (23.50 backstroke), Clontz (25.08 breaststroke), Bryce Spangler (22.66 fly), and Thomas Greathouse (20.83 free) winning by a second-and-a-half over Ravenscroft

Clontz, meanwhile, picked up a win in the 200 free in 1:36.67, an All-America time, over Charlotte Country Day sophomore Santi Alzate-Celin (1:39.00).

In the 500 free later in the session, Alzate-Celin got his clapback, winning in 4:23.83 to Clontz's 4:25.93."

"Durham Academy's Ian Platts-Mills won the 200 IM in 1:47.34, setting a new NCISAA Record. That was his first individual state title in his last meet before matriculating to Cal in the fall. He also finished 2nd in the 100 back behind Bartee."

As of now Swimcloud still shows Alex at CAL. Maybe they just haven't updated her status but wondering if anyone has heard anything. Is she going to sit out the year before deciding? Still hoping she has changed her mind back and will be coming to CAL

Here is the article on swimswam. Looks like she will have a 'hybrid schedule' at Indiana...taking on-line classes but still training back home in Carmel. My guess bro might do the same, if they are so hot about training at home.
