Cal vs pitts now on ACC live stream (via ESPN syreaming). After 1 rotation, Cal 49.175 (bars) & Pitt 48.650 (vault). 2nd rotation they switch routines. Bars definitely one of our stronger events but they have done better.

Cal wins the meet, but has a lot of work to do. Not a single 9.9 in any event.
Lee may have been a top recruit, but today she had the lowest/dropped score on vault and beam and a not great score on floor that normally would have been dropped except for Silvers.
Pitt outsccored Cal on Beam and Floor but Cal got big lead on Bars.

Cal had the lowest team score in quite a while: 195.550. The only strong event that the Bears had was uneven bars. In the other three events, they had two gymnasts score in the 9.8s each. Zero 9.9 or above scores performed by Cal on the day. Frosh Sara Lee is competing at a different level than the rest of her team. She was in the 9.5s on three events and in the 9.6 range on the other. Seniors Casey Brown and Miki Aderinto performed well, both scoring 9.8 or above on both of their individual events. Casey had the highest score on the uneven bars with a 9.875. Junior Annalise Newman-Achee had the best All-Around total of 39.2.

Florida is ranked number one with a 19 7.750 score. Nobody's cracked 198 yet. Are they scoring meets tighter this year. Our top score is 196.350. Hertz in Clemson are .200 more. Obviously a bit of improvement will be required, to win ACC. Coach back loaded the schedule (after the ACC concluded) with Quad meets with the cupcakes or
.194.xxx schools, so 20 wins is still achievable.

To be an NCAA qualifier, the Bears need to be scoring 197s.

Cal's former coaches are off to a rough start at Clemson with losses to Alabama (197.475-196.550) and to Cal's next opponent, NC State (196.125 - 195.925)
However, Clemson has had two home meets and is averaging 7135 attendance.

Stanford defeated NC state (our next opponet 197.225 to 196.400. NC score better than our best of 196.350. Our match with NCS will be at home, so hopefully we have some home cooking. Cal team is still very young and our frosh our still adjusting.

Florida has former Bear eMjae Frazier and she have had a number of 9.9+ this year in floors, bars, and beam.

Cal's team is not that young. Four freshmen, four sophomores, three juniors & four seniors. The loss of soph Ondine Achampong from England might keep the Bears from the postseason. She was projected to be Cal's top All-Arounder this season.

Btw-eMjae Frazier is not the best gymnast on Florida. She might be 3rd or 4th right now. Ella Cesario was the high scorer for Clemson when I checked one of their meets. The former Cal recruit that they have on their roster is not good enough, yet, to participate as a frosh.

They are young in terms of experience. Losing 4 all-around was a set back.

Experience from the CalBears website:

Scanlon - 5th year - but injured first three and a half. Only competed on beam last year.

Silvers - Senior - one meet as junior, 14 vaults as sophomore, no events as frosh. Only did floor against Pitt and had score dropped

Brown - Senior - 19 routines as junior. Had team high scores on vault and bars yesterday, Did not compete on floor and beam

Aderinto - Senior - one routine as frosh, one routine as soph, two routines as junior. Only did bars/beam at Pitt

Newman-Achee - Junior - 11 bars as soph, no routines as frosh - only AA for Cal

Mayhew - Junior - competed in all meets as soph

Kikuno - Junior - did not compete as frosh or soph nor so far this year

Wiley - Soph - 13 meets as frosh - mostly on vault + 3 bars routines. Only did vault/bars at pitt

Taurek - Soph - one floor routine as frosh and then injured - has not competed this year

Melkonian - Soph - only exhibitions as frosh

Keuneke - Soph - 10 Floor routines as frosh - only did floor at Pitt and not well

Achampong - Soph - injured out all season

Rest are freshmen.

FWIW, sounds like incompetence at best, shenanigans at worst with Pitts sound/music system that is supposed to play music for their routines. Implies that the mishaps only happened one way.

Thank you for your recap. Was hoping that Mayhew would be leading this squad but had not found her consistency yet.

That's what i thought ... Here is my tweet as i watched the meet

Yesterday was the first i watched so far this season. We should temper our expectations since this is pretty much a new squad and a new coaching staff. There will clearly be growing pains as gymnasts get comfortable with everything. This even more so with the loss of Ondine. She was training for AA. This squad is basically replacing all their routines. That said I thought they did relatively given all this context.

The meet was not close and Cal was doing well midway thru the meet. Then the whole music situation happened. Deliberate or not, it did rattle Cal. It opened the door slightly to Pitt. But this squad did rally. I think thats the takeaway. An inexperienced squad gained invaluable experience yesterday.

Go Bears! Hope to be there Saturday

Cal 196.050 NCS 195.575
Stats

Still no Cal gymnast with a 9.9 (no gymnast for NCS scored a 9.9 either). So, if Bears start hitting, it seems that a 197 might be attainable.
Lots of mixing - S.Lee reduced to two events and two exhibitions. Brown did two exhibitions as well.
Achee and Paulsson both did four events.

Cal pulled that meet out of the fire with four 9.8s on their worst event, floor exercise. Several gymnasts choked on events that they usually excel at this afternoon. NC State stuck virtually every landing. Cal missed the majority of their landings, taking a step forward or backwards. On uneven bars, the Bears had a couple meets when every score was 9.8 or better. Today, three competitors tallied 9.7s or below. I thought that was going to cost the outcome of the close competition, but Cal squeaked out on all four rotations. GO BEARS!

Think at the end Paulsson will be our best & most consistent gymnast. No major errors I could see but then again I'm just a novice. Sarah Lee much better this week. Good crowd ..maybe 1500-2000 people.

Choked? Even Simone Biles falls or doesn't get a perfect 10 each time. You're choking on your words ...again!!

Only saw the last half of the last rotation, but Stanfurd opened the door for Cal with some earlier errors on beam. Cal finished on beam but Stanford finished on its best team event - floor.
Cal comes up short scoring top team score for the year 196.825 to Stanford's 196.975

Cal got some 9.9 scores today -

Brown and Paulsson on Bars
Mayhew on Vault
Paulsson on Floor
and Newman-Achee on Beam trying to will Cal over the line.

But Stanford scores 196.975 overall.
Cal had season highs on Vault, Floor and Beam. Stanford won the meet by bigger scores on Bars and Floor.
Cal had #2 and #3 All Around
Cal had top vault performer and even floor performer.
But, it's a team sport.

Scores here: https://scores.virti.us/session?s=mAaey25UeT

Next up away at Clemson with their new familiar coaches, 7000 fans, and maybe some home cooking as Clemson scored 197.0250 tonite against North Carolina.

Cal improving with the best score for the year! Good showing especially on the road. Hope they will be sky high against Clemson.

I watched the meet last night. I would say that was Cal's best performance by far. Stanford has taken Cal's place as the #6 team in the nation. The Cardinal had three freshmen lead off their initial event that blew me away. They looked like future stars. Several Bears excelled last evening and that was good to see. I keep thinking that if only we had Ondine Achampong as an All-Around performer that we would be competitive.

I hope that Cal can upset Clemson in South Carolina next weekend. The Tigers scored 197 for the first time in defeating UNC. GO BEARS!

WHat? Stanford has always been ranked higher. The last time I saw the ranking CAL was #18.

I am referencing the last couple of seasons when Cal was ranked in the top half dozen programs nationally. Now Stanford's program has supplanted the Cal program as elite. The Cardinal is absolutely loaded with talent.

Cal with 49.400 on bars just off season high if 49.425. Melkonian and Paulson with 9.9+ scores

Clemson scores 49.175 on vault for a new season high
ncbears
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Ugh. Mayhew, Cal's top vaulter, falls on her vault. Cal only scores 49.075z

Clemson scores 49.350 on their bars rotation, another season high.

Clemson leads 98.525 - 98.475

But Cal goes to its two weakest rotations beam and floor. First is floor for Bears

Season high in floor 49.200 but could have been higher. Dont understand Paulson score

Oh no. Cal was headed to big score on beam for a 197+ overall when Newman Achee falls in anchor spot. 49.275 a season high and 196.950 season high

Major delay on final Clemson score on floor. But Cal hangs on with win 196.950 - 196.900.

It was a long wait for clemson's final score. She had to score a 9.925 for clemson to win but only did 9.850. Terrific win on the road!
