Gotta finish off 2016 recruiting and reassess future needs then, but two new names emerged from Juniors for the future: Marta Ciesla (2017) and Izzy Henig (2018). Bears need to replace Farida and KV in the 2017 class and Lauren Pitzer and Marta look like the two best sprint prospects. Henig is local (PASA-Acker, Grima, Campbell) and could replace Hull.

Katie is swimming really well, but what was she thinking by pulling a back to back 100 Fly and 200 IM double? I expected Megan Small to make the A Final, but she might be worn out from Juniors. Interestingly, in the 100 Fly C Final, Veronica Burchill beat out Beata Nelson. Katie came in fourth, and Cassidy Bayer made the big girls A final. Tomorrow will be exciting with the 100 Back (Amy, Claire Adams, Megan Small) and the 200 Free, which in Katie's prime event.

Small's coaches made the same mistake as Any's did last year. Should have focused on Nationals rather than trying to swim both Juniors and Nationals. Small's still a beast, but that was a mistake.

Would have liked to see Drabot in the 400 Free rather than the 100 Fly. Voss scratched the 400 Free. Chenoa looking good in the 400/500. Beata may be overrated. Crappy LCM swimmer, but a lot of versatility.

Teri should build around the Dream Team. Would still like a breaststroker to free up Baker, but think Teri may need to add another flyer before Merrell/Bayer in 2018. KM's upside is that high in the 200 Free/800 Relay.

And the number 1 ranked qualifier in the 100 Back is...........Claire Adams! Amy came in 9th and will be in the B Final. Not bad for coming off of injury just one month ago. Erin Voss 27th, Megan Small 36th, Keaton Blovad 41st, and Courtney Mykkanen 53rd.

C final of the 100 Back will be almost all 2016 targets: Voss, Small, KB, Beata, and Mykkanen. Will be interesting to see all of them in the same heat. Still see KB as a 200 IM/200 Free/100 Free swimmer for the Bears and Small as 200 IM/400 IM/200 Back swimmer for Cal. Adams and Voss would swim both backs. Beata's probably too expensive and only comes instead of Adams, Small, or Voss. Bears may want another 100 flyer to free up KM for the 200/800, but don't need one before 2017. Horejsi would free up Baker for the 100 Back and not make an elite backstroker a 2016 must have. 59 mid/2:07 mid SCY Marina would be an Oskisend.

Get that the rankings are published in July to lay the groundwork for official recruiting trips, but seems more accurate to evaluate at the end of LC season. Realize there's the LCM/SCY split, but coaches really don't know how good their freshmen are until the mid-year invitationals. Gives them 4 months of training and gets a chance to see how well they perform under pressure with some rest. Good proxy for championship season. Good chance to see who can get it done in prelims.

It's hard for me to believe that Claire has narrowed down to those three schools already, but we will see what happens.

Can uderstand that list for Adams. All of those schools have bigger needs for backstrokers than Cal, Georgia, and LSJU and can try and sell Adams on being the key piece that can get them a title.

With Baker and Bilquist, Bears have a niche need for 200 Back depth. If Marina solves SCYs, Bears are set with Baker and Amy in the 100 Back or on the back legs of both relays. May be able to grow Mau or Blovad into a 100 Back scorer. Georgia's in good shape with Smoliga and Stewart. LSJU has the biggest need with only Howe, but if they find another flyer, they could move Hu to back. Beata would solve both fly and back problems on the farm.

Small would help the Bears in the 400 IM, 200 Back, and 200 IM. Club teammate of Georgia's Hali Flickinger, so they'll be in the hunt too. Whoever gets Small probably has an advantage with 2017 distance ace Courtney Harnish too.

Voss is better in the 200 than the 100. Could lhelp in the 500 Free too.

If Claire has already narrowed her fave schools to those aforementioned 3 programmes, I can buy that she had received better offers (scholly and additionally other incentives) from them than what the top 3 NCAA swimming powers were prepared to put on the table. Or it's always conceivable that Teri had felt that there are other candidates ahead of Adams for Cal's particular requirements taking into consideration the limited available recruiting slots, and so may have never even approached Claire in the first place... Don't know if it's just stubborn school pride or what , but otherwise I can't really see a top prospect like CA turning down an invitation to scout a top college like Cal on a recruiting trip at the very least!

Guess would still like to see 2 or 3 of Katie Drabot, Meghan Small, Becca Mann, Erin Voss, Allie Szekely & Lindsey Horejsi (not all that hopeful about Lindsey though as top breaststrokers are always in high demand, and I don't know of any connections she may have to us) end up donning the blue & gold... Should keep an eye on Abbey's clubmate & 2017 recruit Nikol Popov in the [U]100 breast[/U] C final tonight, also Alexis Wenger - they both could well help out Bears in the future. The pair will be facing off U$C commits Riley Scott & Kirsten Vose (latter was recruited by Teri) as well as 2016 commit Kennedy Lohman (UofA). The B final will have 2016 recruit Lindsey Horejsi as the youngest competitor in that heat.

Thus far it seems that Amy's recovery is on an encouraging trajectory, albeit much more solidly with her freestyle than with her back. She will contest the A final of the [U]50 free[/U] this evening, as the only qualifier who will be in her teens in that championship heat (alumna Madison Kennedy will also be featured there). Even if it's not her best distance, Katie D will be duking it out with 2016 prospect & top seed Lauren Pitzer in the C final, as well as Bulldawg commit Veronica Burchill. Beata is an alternate, but probably won't get a 2nd swim tonight.

With Abbey and KB already on board, looks like there are two more big ticket slots still open. Adams would have been great, but Mann, Horejsi, Drabot, Small, Voss, Beata, AS, and Jacobsen could all help the Bears. Would take Marsh over Mykkanen (a developmental flyer is a more pressing need than a developmental backstroker). Any of Isleta, Devine, or Simonds would work. Think Jenna Campbell was an extremely underrated pick up.

Yeah UAC, my wish list for 2016 is taking a beating, but I am still confident that Katie Drabot will be a Bear, and like you said BearDevil's philosophy of filling needs instead cornering the market on the best swimmers is also very valid. I'm really perplexed on who we will end up with this year, and like you said we are so spoiled from last year when everything fell into place like a "Dream".

Drabot, Adams, and Small have been the three most impressive recruits at Nationals so far. Drabot and Adams nailed their tapers and are extremely polished and well coached. Small's trying to swim in four major meets (Pan Ams, Juniors, Nationals, World Juniors) in the same season. Hasn't gone perfectly, but does show the toughness you want in a 400 IMer or 200 backstroker.

Thought Stanzi was the top ranked recruit, but she's badly missed her taper. Drabot's shown a huge range. She could help the Bears in the 200 Free, 200 IM, 500 Free. 400 IM, 100 Free, and 50 Free. Potential two relay (800/400 Free) swimmer. Only downside is that her optimal personal program may not exactly align with Cal's needs and she could swim a more suitable mix at LSJU, Wisconsin, Notre Dame, or elsewhere. Dunno which events she wants to swim, but Mann (500 Free, 400 IM) or Small (400 IM) at Cal would make it easier for her to shine in the 200 Free/800 relay on Friday at NCAAs.

Both the strength and weakness of Teri's teams and recruiting is versatility. It's a two way street. Teri may not recruit someone who is world class in a single event, but someone like Natalie (200 Back), Missy (500 Free, 200 IM), Baker (100 Breast), or Drabot (400 IM) may end up swimming an NCAA event that has no international future for them. Adams could swim the 50/100/200 Free in college, but he Nationals program is simply both backs. Drabot can swim a bunch of events and has at Nationals, but her immediate international future is 200 Free. Think she ends up at a school that maximizes her chances for international success. Bears are near the saturation point in nearly all sprints and may make it difficult to find exactly the right fits for both sides.

Not everyone values being part of a championship team over their own personal goals. Not necessarily a bad thing, but perhaps surprising coming from Adams. Carmel is the Wooden Bruins of Indiana swimming, and Amy to Cal or Burchill to Georgia make sense in that context.

Sad to say the Dream Team is an anomaly. Mann's the only 2016 recruit at Worlds. McL, Baker, and Abbey are in medal contention. 2016 Cal team will have 3 former Olympians (Bootsma, Farida, and Marina) and 5 potential Olympians (Noemie, McL, Baker, Pelton, and Cierra). With that much fire power, you need some niche role players (KB, Jenna) to go with superstars. Bing, Piehl, Cheng, and Acker were extremely valuable parts of the 2015 championship team.

Disappointing 200 Back from Voss. Adams qualifies second. Mykkanen ahead of Naze, but between Small and AS. Small, Mykkanen, and AS all made the C final. Rough when potential recruits (Voss, Beata) don't qualify for even C finals (reserved for juniors) in the events they would swim for the Bears.

As Nationals have shown, Claire is by far the top recruit of the 2016 Backstroke class. The others, Small, Voss, Nelson, Szekeley, don't come close. This is why I am still in denial that she apparently doesn't even have a campus visit set up. Let's look at the things in our favor. Cal is backstroke U. and is probably home to the top five backstrokers in the country, Missy, Natalie, Boots, Liz, and Kathleen (top six if you include a healthy Amy). Teri is a former National Team coach, and has a graduate program set up for swimming after student athletes are done with their eligibility. She is close friends with Amy, and from UAC's pictures it looks like they have already spent time in the Bay Area together. And for the negatives, distance from home might be a small factor, but I think the biggest factor is that she won't be top dog and may not get a medley relay spot with Amy and Kathleen around. Hmmm, in fact that might be a reason why she isn't considering Georgia too. Then again, Virginia has Bartholomew, although she will be a senior next year. So BD, do you think we need to recruit another backstroker this year? Is Keaton the answer? Or do we focus on other areas of need? What does the 2017 Backstroke class look like?

Clearly Adams is the best back option in the class. Have gone back and forth on the pecking order, but I'd go Mann, Horejsi, Adams, Drabot, Small, Beata, AS, Voss, and Jacobsen (in that order).

Bears need distance support to slow LSJU and Georgia from piling up points. 400 IM is also a problem that Mann could fix.

Horejsi would free up Baker in 2017. With Boots and Pelton in 2016, Baker's fine in the 100 Breast and the medley breast legs. Amy or Baker can handle the back legs in 2017, but that means an improved Marina or Horejsi. Still would leave a need for another 200 Back scorer. Training partner for Popov would help.

Without a breast solution, Bears need another 2016 backstroker. Don't think KB's the answer. Think she can develop in IMs or sprints and maybe in back, but not as a medley leg.

Drabot's too good to pass up, but not clear if she wants to swim the 500 or 400 IM. May have a little of the Adams' potential problem-would be on the 800 Free, but not as anchor. Might make the 400 Free, but probably not the 200 Free relay.

Originally thought Teri might need to choose Abbey's four relays carefully, so Drabot would make the 800 Free an easy decision. McL's and Baker's individual swims are even a little trickier. That's why Horejsi followed by Popov would clean up the back for Baker. Beata in the 100 Fly could allow McL to swim the 200 Free as an individual event still after Boots graduates. Not as many big pieces in the 2016 class, but a lot of complementary pieces that can optimize/maximize the Dream Team.

Not a dig on KB, but doubt she's taking Boots or Pelton scholly $s. Cal was probably her dream school and she quickly took Teri's initial offer. Don't think it will open up enough $s for three more big $ recruits, but may mean 3 locals/legacies.

Sorry to disagree with you BD, but I think Horejsi is a reach, unless you know of any connection between her and Cal. Plus, is Teri going to recruit someone who might only score in one event. We might need to look internationally while we wait for the big recruitment of Nikol Popov in 2017. In my wildest dreams, Watanabe (19) or the Italian girl Castiglioni (18) would be good choices :p.

Freely admit that Mann/Horejsi is a long shot, but would be the most efficient solution to distance, 400 IM, breast, and back. Baker's a great all-around swimmer and still think she's got a higher back ceiling than Adams. Had previously thought Drabot and Adams were most likely, but now not sure.

Drabot's gotta be the top ranked recruit now with 100 Free final still to go. Fastest in the 50/100/200, third in the 200 IM, and fourth in the 100 Fly. Stanzi only made a single final (B in the 100 Free).

I think Katie's [U]50m[/U] was a new PB, team + state record! :beer:

Though Amy is still the top dog in this event in spite of not being 100% health-wise, earning the 18 & under National Champion title for 2015 :bravo

Meghan had also bested her PB in the 400 IM by a solid 4 seconds :cheer

Claire of course outperforming even my high expectations :acclaim: I think Teri needs to rush back from Kazan and make a sneaky last-minute play for Adams (esp if she hadn't recruited her previously)...or ring Kathie Wickstrand up to ask her to chat with Claire @ San Antonio ASAP, i.e. this afternoon...Claire has to realise how much more she can flourish @ Cal in so many areas compared to UT, A&M or UVA! :p

As you guys have noted, Stanzi, Allie, Beata, Erin and a few others from our virtual shopping lists not having exactly the meet that they were probably hoping for here... :cry: Well perhaps this meet was just an anomaly for some of them, a blown taper or feeling under the weather, and their short course yards will pan out significantly better than in the big pool - at least that's my hope/excuse for them!

Also have to agree on tedbear ranking > swimswam version!

Now the icing on the cake would be Katie Ledecky coming to her financial senses after her prodigious accomplishments @ Worlds and turning pro before Rio hehe Realistically though, don't think her family's exactly hurting in the $ department thanks partly to their uncle, and I suspect that like Missy, Katie highly values the opportunity to swim for her college @ NCAAs...

Does look like Drabot and Small declined. Drabot was eligible in at least the 50 and 200 and they've already added 800 relay swimmers, so she probably passed. May have decided she only wanted to swim one taper meet and concentrate in recruiting and school.

Small was eligible in the 200 IM. After Pan Ams, Juniors, and Nationals, she's gotta be beat. Showed her toughness, but should have skipped Juniors.

Adams showed her hand a little bit more by swimming the 100 Free. 4 relay swimmer and lead backstroker at UVa, A&M, and UT. At least a 3 relay swimmer at Georgia. Likely a 2 relay swimmer at Cal, but no guarantee.

LSJU and Georgia both need breaststrokers in this recruiting class. On the farm, Haase graduates after the season. Poppe was a prep star, but had an uneven frosh year. Maija beat her in both breasts at Nationals.

Georgia loses Zhu after the season. They used Meaghan Raab for the breast leg on the 200 medley to save Zhu for the 400 IM. Bears wanted Raab, but not as a breaststroker. Baker, Marina, and Maija are all faster in both breasts.

If I had to assign probabilities, highest would be that Ledecky doesn't swim all 4 years, second highest would be that she swims three years, and third highest is that she goes pro and never swims in college.

Female distance swimmers peak early, so she likely has two Olympics left. Didn't make any money after 2012 and won't make any money after 2016 as an amateur. To maximize cash flow, she should go pro now and enroll at LSJU in January 2017. Open question if they would let her train with the team as a pro. If not, she stays in DC to train and goes to Georgetown. Leaves a lot of money on the table, but still makes some money by swimming three seasons and going pro in 2019. May be past her prime in 2020 and way too much risk.

Bears don't need a fly replacement for Boots in this class with Farida, Noemie, Mau, and McL still on the team. Highly unlikely Beata becomes a Bear. Probably do need two of Hannah, Bayer, and Merrell between 2017 and 2018 (Farida, Noemie/Mau). If Drabot doesn't come, two sprinters (Farida and KV) is a bigger 2017 priority than Hannah. Just means a lot more pressure in 2018 to land both/either Bayer and Merrell. McL's not a bad card to have on the team through 2019.
