Signing day. Will be interesting to see which diver the Bears add and if any additional locals are added. Still curious about Moriah Simonds.

Signing Day: The SwimSwam Index of Class of 2016 College Commitments

“It’s the most wonderful time of the year….” Nope, we’re not talking about the holiday season, although that’s pretty wonderful, too. We’re talking about the weeklong Early Signing Period that stretches, this year, from November 11 to November 18, 2015. Beginning today, athletes in many NCAA sports –among them swimming and diving– are invited to sign the National Letter of Intent (NLI), the agreement between the college and the prospective student-athlete whereby the institution promises an athletic scholarship and the athlete promises to attend the school.

Signing Day is a big deal for the student-athlete; it rewards him or her for years and years of hard work. It is also a big deal for the collegiate sport of swimming and diving, which is put on center stage all across the country with all the other sports offering NLIs to high school athletes.

At SwimSwam, we get just as excited about “our” athletes signing their NLIs as you do. We love to see how many different schools provide opportunities for swimmers and divers of all levels. As of 6:00 am on Signing Day (athletes are not allowed to sign NLIs before 7:00 am in their home time zones), we have written commitment articles on 689 student athletes. And counting! Our articles, when viewed in aggregate, tell the story of swimming at the collegiate level in the United States. They tell where the athletes are coming from, where they’re going, where they’re needed, and whose footsteps they’re following.

We’ve written about some really big hitters (Maxime Rooney, Meghan Small, Michael Jensen, Beata Nelson, and Becca Mann) as well as swimmers joining brand-new programs (e.g., University of Sioux Falls).

In the spreadsheet below, you can follow along by sorting by conference, by college, by state, by high school, by LSC… however you would like to view the trends. We’ll update this list as we continue to wrap up more recruits, so bookmark this page to keep track!

Sobering afterthought - have to give Greg Meehan some credit for having killed it in the recruiting dept over at the Farm - we prob have the edge this year, but unless Teri aces the next couple of recruiting cycles, the Furd may well be the ones to beat from 2017 NCAAs onwards...though the Dream Team, with Abbey finally slotted in, will definitely have to say something about that!

Swim on you Bears!

With a 2015 Women’s Championships on its resume, the University of California Bears Swimming & Diving program is certainly not lacking in the recruitment department. Recent signees aren’t shy about expressing their love for Cal as both an academic and athletic powerhouse.

Within the video, watch and listen to incoming Bears Keaton Blovad, Courtney Mykkanen, Maddie Murphy and others praise the University for its staff, legacy and atmosphere. Says Maddie Murphy of her decision to attend Cal, “Everything just clicked with the coaching staff and the team.” Chenoa Devine agrees, saying that the entire swimming staff wants to make swimmers both “better athletes and better people.”

And according to the video, Head Coach Teri McKeever can also play a mean game of Scattergories.

Bears Fill Needs With Recruiting Class

Cal Women's Swim & Dive Inks Seven For 2016-17

By Cal Athletics on Wed, November 11, 2015

Cal Athletics

BERKELEY The Cal women's swimming & diving team focused on its own back yard while filling also its needs with the 2016-17 recruiting class that was announced Wednesday by head coach Teri McKeever.

Four of the seven newest Bears, each of whom signed a National Letter of Intent on Wednesday, hail from the state of California. Junior National Team members Courtney Mykkanen of North Tustin and Chenoa Devine of Davis will begin their Cal careers in the fall along with fellow Californians Maddie Murphy of Orinda and Aislinn Light of Irvine.

Keaton Blovand of Lake Oswego, Oregon the No. 13 recruit in the country according to swimswam.com is also joining the Bears along with Anina Lund of Purchase, N.Y. and Alexa Buckley of Mountainside, N.J.

Mykkanen, Murphy and Light all have several relatives who attended Cal. Mykkanen's father, John, was an All-American swimmer at Cal who won a Silver Medal in the 400-meter freestyle at the 1984 Summer Olympics.

"A lot of these girls have connections to Cal," McKeever said. "We really wanted to get swimmers from California to get back to our roots."

Mykkanen was a member of the U.S. Junior National Team from 2012-13 and competed in the Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing, China in 2014. Devine has qualified for the 2016 Olympic Trials in the 400 free, 800 free and 400 individual medley.

Murphy has qualified for the Olympic Trials in the 100 butterfly and won the CIF state championship in the 100 fly at Carondelet High School. Light has been a NISCA High School All-American throughout her career at Mater Dei High School.

Blovand has also qualified for the 2016 Olympic Trials, and it will be her second trip to the event. In 2012, she was the youngest swimmer to participate in the Olympic Trials at the age of 13. Lund swam in the 2014 Summer Nationals in the 800 and 1,500 free while Buckley was a qualifier for both the Junior Nationals and Winter Nationals.

"We definitely wanted to recruit girls this year that would fill some holes that we had," McKeever said. "We needed some certain types of student-athletes, and we definitely accomplished that."

The seven newest Golden Bears will begin their Cal careers in the fall of 2016.

Keaton Blovad is the top seed in the 100 Breast at US Juniors. Swan pretty well last week in LCMs, so kinda surprising that she's coming back this week in SCYs. No doubt that Teri would like to get a breast medley replacement for Marina in the next recruiting class, but Baker and Keaton are not bad options if she doesn't land the exact right fit.

Still perplex how we struck out on 2016 dream team, after cleaning up 2015 recruits. In a way, I think Cal is under pressure to win the NCAA this year to valid our recruiting...

Amen. Rough to look at Hannah's and Drabot's times. Both would have been plug and play for the 2017 Bears.

Blue and gold lining is that Devine has a fair amount of upside in the 500 Free, 400 IM, and 200 Free. Potential early NCAA scorer.

It does not look good that diving coach Todd Mulzet was specifically mentioned in the SF Gate article. The Daily Cal has additional details on the incidents involving Mulzet.

Also, a SwimSwam article:

Daily Cal article wasn't exactly what I was expecting. Had assumed that a coaching upgrade might be in the works after at least a year will full diving facilities.

Cal legacy (dad swam on an NCAA championship team) Amanda Sims (NCAA champ on a title team) was the last Cal star from the North Bay. Taylor Young also from Neptune washed out. No doubt Bears recruited DiRado, but have underachieved in recruiting Neptune swimmers.
