What Does It Take To Qualify For The 2016 NCAA DI Championships?

Thought that McL was in via 200 Free and 100 Fly already?

Not quite yet...

Have the utmost confidence tho that a host of likely qualifications will fall in place this weekend at Winter Nationals, assuming that most of the team will be partly rested for this important midseason meet (unless that's offset by too much turkey & stuffing gobbling over @ Thanksgiving lol).

Here are my roughshod calculations/conversions for the top 3 times achieved by :bear:s in your aforementioned events at this point of the season, both from short course yards duals + the recent long course metres Minn Pro Series:

Here's who's entered in what from the team - should help give us a clearer picture of the individual NCAA races which will likely be targeted by the respective Bear.

Whole slew of post grad pros & elites (Missy, Caitlin, Dana, Nathan etc) also competing, in addition to 2016 recruits (baby :bear:s Keaton, Anina, Aislinn & Alexa...Abbey too!), not to forget the ones that "got away" (Claire, Meghan, Stanzi etc.), and a personal fave of mine, Siobhn... :p

There will no doubt be some scratches, as several swimmers appear to be taking a heavier load than required/allowed for NCAA champs or contesting off events (unless it's to fine tune here what's best to actually compete in @ NCs, and/or for training purposes). For example, Kathleen taking on the 100 Fly, 200 Free & 100 Back on Day 2 (would expect her to drop the 100 Fly perhaps).

One puzzle is Jasmine appearing only once on the psych sheet (100 free) - wondering if she's injured or something else??

Other mid-season meets to keep an eye out on are the Texas and the Georgia Invites happening in the same timeframe (in short course yards). Will be interesting to see how all the major NCAA Div 1 schools stack up against each other after this big weekend of hard racing!

Thanks for the breakouts, UAC.

Would consider the weekend a success if McL, Pelton, Acker, and Hull solidify invites. Those plus the others already in would cover all of the Bears' best possible relays.

Don't see Boots or Marina in the 200 IM or Baker or Acker in the 100 Fly. Teri wants to keep Boots and Marina fresh for the 400 Medley Relay. Baker will swim the 100 Back, 200 Free, or 400 IM. Teri's all in with Marina on the breast legs for both medleys. Acker will swim the 200 Free. All the other swims at Winter Nationals, save for Mau, make sense in the context of potential NCAA individual programs.

AUSTIN, Texas -- Three days at the Texas Diving Invitational gave the Cal diving team a chance to test itself against quality competition and the Bears responded with some encouraging results as they brought several highlights back to Berkeley after Saturday's final day of competition.

Freshman Phoebe LaMay provided a definite highlight for the three days in Austin, turning in a strong performance in the 1-meter on Friday. The native of Houston, Texas enjoyed her return to the Lone Star State, finishing second to only Texas' Meghan Houston with a score of 313.25.

LaMay wasn't the only Cal diver in the mix for the 1-meter as senior Anne Kastler also turned in a strong performance to finish sixth with a score of 296.80. Kastler proved impressive again on Saturday as she posted a score of 226.35 to finish eighth in the platform.

Fellow Bear Sara-Lina Boushakra ended her meet on a strong note, finishing a team-high seventh in the platform with a score of 231.00. All three of Cal's female divers finished in the top 15 in points, with Lamay seventh, Kastler eighth and Boushakra 15th.

Peter Cyr represented the Bears on the men's side and finished 12th in both the 1-meter and 3-meter events.

Wondering same, after she came in last against Utah in the 100fly at 59.70!! This from a swimmer who was a scorer in the 100fly at the NCAA 'ship.

No Grima either. No clue about Mau, but think Grima may be more focused on graduating on time rather than racing. Find it hard to believe Hurst qualified, but Grima didn't.

Bears Gear Up For Winter Nationals

By Cal Athletics on Tue, December 01, 2015

Hard to believe it's already December here in Berkeley. We just returned from a weekend in Minneapolis for the first long course competition of our season. There was tons of awesome racing from every member of the team, and we used it as an opportunity to tune up before Winter Nationals in Federal Way, Washington this weekend.

The pool deck is never lacking in energy (or dance moves) when the team arrives. Big meets can often be laced with high pressure for competitors, but it's hard to feel stressed when the team is constantly enjoying one another's company. If there's one thing we all know and believe as a team, it's that at the end of the day you're going to perform your best and be the happiest when you're having fun, and surrounded by people who support your goals in and out of the water. There's something about standing behind a block and hearing a resounding chorus of "GO BEARS!," followed by a little bit of laughter that prepares you to step up and put it on the line for your teammates.

We're heading to AT&T Winter Nationals this weekend! Keep up with us on all our social media accounts, and we'll see you next time.

GO BEARS!

Day 1 prelims
200 IM - Celina (3) and Kathleen (6) make the A final. Liz (15) makes the B final, but in my opinion a little bit of a disappointing swim for her. Kelly (18) makes the C final. Others of note Caitlyn (1), Siobhan Haughey (4), Meghan Small (9), Ella Eastin (11), Kim Williams (14), and Nikol Popov (17). Good to see Nikol is more than just a breaststroker.
50 Free - Abbey finishes ahead of Simone! Hopefully she can do the same tonight. The ageless wonder, Natalie, finishes fifth, with Farida right behind her in sixth. Amy (12) makes B final, and in the promising news department Valerie(24) makes the C final. Others of note, Lia Neal (10), Siobhan(16), Stanzi Moseley (17), Eva Merrell (18), and Missy (19).

Two and a half days of racing left but if they don't qualify in converted LCM, McL, Pelton, Acker, and Hull will go for Sunday SCY time trials to finalize NCAA invites.

Ault looks to be an early scorer in the 500. Cassy Jernberg was a recruit we discussed and Anina's time was in the same ball park.

Day 1 finals
Who looked great?
Kathleen and Kelly in the 200IM!!! Kathleen came in third to the two people who are likely going to represent the USA in the Olympics for the 200 IM. I love the fact that she had a better time than furdie Ella Eastin, who is an IM specialist. Kelly came in first in the C final and looked strong throughout. She lost her lead to Nikol after the breaststroke leg, which is Nikol's forte, but fought back strong on the free leg and won going away. Abbey, Amy, and Farida in the 50 Free! Abbey barely got touched out (.03 seconds) in the last five meters to be bested by her nemesis Simone. Farida took third in the same A final. Amy also got touched out in the last five meters (.08) by Lia Neal. If Abbey and Amy can train to sustain in those last five meters they will beat those furdies at the Olympic trials. Also looking good, Caitlyn although she came in second to another furdie DiRado, and Natalie, who came in fifth in the A final.

Who looked solid?
Celina in the 200IM. Celina was actually 1.5 seconds slower in the final than in the prelims, but hey, she made the A final although she finished last. Valerie in the 50 Free. Valerie improved on her prelims time by .25 seconds and timed under 26 seconds, finishing sixth in the C final.

Who am I concerned about?
Liz. Liz ballooned 2.5 seconds from her prelim time in the finals and finished 7th in the B final. This is an event where she placed third at the 2012 US Olympic trials. I wish I knew if she was allowed to taper, because if she didn't, that would make me feel better. Liz is so important to our National Championship aspirations, and I hope in the end she will come through.

Three names that came up while looking at Friday's prelims list: Keaton Blovad, Alexa Buckley, and Claire Adams. Tomorrow's 100 Back includes Natalie, Kathleen, Missy, Boots, Liz, Claire, Amy, Melanie, and Keaton. Hmmm, which one of those isn't a Bear? No, I'm not bitter . Hahaha!

Great observations, tedbear - thanks for the analysis

Kelly bested her PB in the 200 IM by almost a second! in fact won her C final race in a faster time than Celina's from the A final. Naze's shown a lot of exciting development this season, and I for one look forward to seeing how she does @ Pac-12s & NCAAs in her senior year!

Speaking of personal bests, Kathleen was a mere 0.04 sec from breaking hers in the 200 IM tonight, and Abbey only 0.06 in the 50 free. Pretty impressive from our 2 studly (baby) :bear:s at this stage of the season, with presumably just partial rest...

Yes, Liz's performance is quite worrisome, started off alright but seemed to run out of gas in her back half of the 200 IM...

Hull still has work to do. Needs to drop more time to be safely invited in the 50 Free. Teri stills has other 200 Free Relay options (Farida, Amy, McL, Baker, Acker, Boots), but Hull would give the Bears more flexibility in moving McL and Baker around. Watch Acker's time in the 200 Free, that's her NCAA ticket. Definitely need her for the 800 Free Relay.

Cal and LSJU have different situations this year, but LSJU is better positioned for NCAAs right now. Fewer potential Olympians so they can concentrate more on NCAAs. Rested more for the A&M meet and piled up A SCY cuts.

Bears have the deeper team, but path isn't clear on relays and solidifying NCAA invites. Wouldn't bet against the Bears at NCAAs, but also wouldn't be surprised to see the furdettes jump Cal in the next SwimSwam Power Poll (only college poll that makes any sense).

FEDERAL WAY, Wash. The Cal women's swimming & diving team was well-represented on the leader board on the first day of the 2015 AT&T Winter National Championships on Thursday.

Three Golden Bears advanced to each of the championship finals in the 200 individual medley and 50 freestyle. Former Cal star and 2012 Olympian Caitlin Leverenz placed second in the 200 IM with a time of 2:11.79 while freshman Kathleen Baker was right behind in third place with a lifetime-best mark of 2:12.13. Junior Celina Li placed eighth in a time of 2:15.31. Senior Kelly Naze also recorded a lifetime best in the 200 IM, clocking in at 2:15.28 in the C-final.

Cal signee Abbey Weitzeil celebrated her birthday by finishing second in the 50 free with a time of 24.86 while junior Farida Osman was third with a mark of 25.22. Former Cal swimmer and 12-time Olympic medalist Natalie Coughlin was fifth in 25.27. Freshman Amy Bilquist was second in the B-final with a mark of 25.33 while sophomore Valerie Hull swam a lifetime best of 25.84 in the C-final.

"It was a really solid night," Cal coach Teri McKeever said. "I was very pleased with what I saw. There was good enthusiasm from the team and it was excellent racing to watch and learn from. I look forward to keeping it going."

The Winter Nationals continue Friday with the 400 individual medley, 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke and 100 backstroke.

Friday morning prelims. I think Katie is sick. She was DQed in the 100 Fly, but looked dead in the water, and I don't think she would have made the A or B final anyways. In the 200 Free she finished 43rd with a time that is 6.5 seconds off of her seed time! Uh oh, guess who is the number one seed in the 100 Back? Yup, Claire Adams. She will be joined in the A final with Natalie, Missy, Boots, and Kathleen. Liz and Amy are in the B final, and Keaton is in the C final. Marina still looks good and finished 7th in the 100 Breast. Too bad NCAA isn't in long course for her. Celina is in the B final for the 400IM. In the 200 Free, our current Bears didn't perform as well as we expected. Already mentioned Katie's collapse, Liz is still struggling finishing 24th, and our best performer is Acker who only finished 22nd. On the alumni side, Camille finished 2nd, Missy 5th, and ex-Bear Cierra finished 7th. Dana is quickly returning to the form of queen of the 100 Fly finishing a dominating first. Noemie, Farida, and Kelly are all in the A final, and hopeful future Bear, Eva Merrell finished 9th.

Friday finals
200 Free
Somewhere out there, UAC has a big smile on his face, because Siobhan Haughey is the real deal. She finished third to the two US Olympians who represented us in the 2012 Games. I know we didn't have enough scholarship money, and I still wouldn't trade anyone from the Dream Team, but can you imagine if we continued the Hong Kong pipeline and added Siobhan. I bet we could have made some type of arrangement if Teri had wanted her bad enough. Oh well. Liz told me not to worry about her and went out and won the C final while looking strong the whole way. Her time would have finished second in the B final too. Rachel Acker looked good also, and I am confident that she will not only qualify for the NCAA, but also be a high scorer.

100 Fly
I know we are backstroke U, but I think this year we may be deeper in the Fly. Noemie (4) and Farida (6) looked good as always, but it is the emergence of Kelly Naze(5) in her senior year that is eye opening to me! I'm thinking we might get four swimmers in the A final at NCAA if Katie swims the 100 Fly over the 200 Free. This doesn't include Jasmine who scored at NCAA last year, and Celina in the 200 Fly.

100 Breast
I can see why Marina does better in LCM than SCY. Because of her smaller stature compared to other swimmers, she doesn't have the top end speed that the others swimmers have, but once she gets moving you can see her speed pick up. That's why the extra walls in SC slows her down, and that is also why she does better in the 200 over the 100. 2017 recruit Nikol Popov, who swam well finishing 6th in the B final, is probably the complete opposite because she might be better in SCY than LCM, and has excellent top end speed. She along with Maggie Aroesty are very important recruits for next year.

400 IM
Not much to say here, but Celina is solid as always and is our best hope for scoring in this event.

100 Back
Missy being Missy, Boots being Boots, and Natalie being Natalie. Kathleen was actually first at the turn but came off the wall strangely, faded a little, and finished 6th. Thank god Claire didn't go to the furd! My only surprise is that no one dipped under 1 minute. Amy and Liz looked solid in the B final. Although she is great in both, I always thought that Amy was going to be a better backstroker than sprinter, but now it may be the opposite. And in a great sign for the future, Keaton Blovad gets first in the C final.

How long do you want to ignore this user?
Great summary, tedbear-thanks.

Think Teri was all in on the entire Dream Team, including Eastin and there was never room for Siobhan. No way Teri knew Abbey would defer or Cierra would bail.

Lots of 100 Fly options. Just depends on who the bigger team threat is: Georgia or LSJU. Naze and Li swim the 400 IM to break up Georgia. Would still leave the possibility of Boots, Farida, Noemie, Mau, and McL. Day two (400 IM, 200 Free, 100 Back) is Georgia's best individual scoring day. Dawgs are weak in the 100 Fly and Bears can bury them there while still holding serve elsewhere. LSJU doesn't have the depth to hurt the Bears on day two (other than 100 Breast).

Bears will be solid in 100 Back in 2017 (Baker, Amy, Mykkanen, Keaton). Hopefully Mykkanen can develop into a 200 Back scorer to go with Baker.

Teri looks like she's committed to Marina for the medley breast legs. Bears will be so strong in the other three legs that probably makes sense. Keep Baker and Keaton as IMers and use them for the medley breast legs if Popov or Maggie don't come to Cal. IU is overstocked in sprint breast (frosh King and Tucker), but don't have enough overall depth to contend nationally. If one of the Big Ten schools could monopolize all the Midwest talent, they'd be in the hunt, but too many defections to the West and South.

Thanks for the update, UAC. Good to see Pelton and Acker make it in since both will be needed on at least the 800 Free Relay. Definitely need McL. Hull would also be helpful in the 200/400 Free Relays. Teri generally doesn't use relay only swimmers, but she has room for Hull and KV if needed.

-Boots may be changing up her program. Typically 100 Fly/100 Back/200 Fly, back legs on both medley relays. Good, but not great sprinter, but was well rested on Friday (200 Free Relay) and Saturday (400 Free Relay) last season. Didn't swim the 200 Fly in the main meet or time trials. May swim the 200 IM instead of the 200 Free Relay/200 Fly.

-Georgia was very strong in the 400 IM this weekend, so Naze swimming a time trial. Probably go with Li and Naze and let Baker and Pelton swim other events.

-Need Mau to contribute if Naze and Boots don't swim both flys. McL probably swaps the 100 Fly for the 200 Free.

-Kinda doubt the team was rested much. If they were, their times are way off from where they usually are at this point in the season. Mau's probably injured and looks like McL was sick. PAC-12s will be interesting since team will have to qualify all their relays and get McL, Hull, Celina, and KV invited to NCAAs.

Teri may have miscalculated in her qualifying strategy. A traditional invite with SCYs might have been the way to go. It's what LSJU and Georgia did. Now they can both swim at PAC-12s/SECs with minimal rest while Bears will have to selectively rest some and still qualify relays. Noemie has Canadian trials just after NCAAs and won't taper before then.

IU is overstocked in sprint breast (frosh King and Tucker), but don't have enough overall depth to contend nationally.

Well sort of hoping that others will do the dirty work for us at this year's NCAAs when it comes to limiting the furdettes' individual scoring in the breast events lol.

Really need breast studs from other schools to push down title threat Haase - freshies Lilly & Miranda (IU) + Riley & Kirsten ('SC), Katarine & Abby (Tenn), Andrea (Louisville), Jorie & Bethany (A&M), Emily (Purdue), Madisyn (Texas)...I'm banking on all of you to come thru for the Bears! :p

Relatively good news for us is it doesn't look like Heidi or Kim will contribute much to the NCAA scoring for LSJU this season either (in breast events), judging by their progress thus far...

Seems a little weird that Abbey, Popov, and Merrell swan SCY time trials. It's all about LCM for Abbey this season. May be some high school CIF benefit for Popov and Merrell.

Popov's time trial time is roughly a half second faster than Marina's best SCY time. If Poppe doesn't improve/recover, Eastin will be LSJU's primary breaststroker next season. Breast is still Cal's weak link, but won't be completely terrible relative to LSJU and Georgia next season.

Bears Offer A Peek At Preparing For Finals

By Cal Athletics on Tue, December 15, 2015

Hey, Bear fans!

It's finals week here in Berkeley, and we've just returned from a weekend in Federal Way, Wash. competing at U.S. Winter Nationals. Now that the fall competition season has ended, we're finishing up the end of the semester on a high note, too.

Finals can be stressful for the entire campus community, so we took a little time after a morning practice during dead week to make "finals cheer" goodie bags. We made 550 little bags to hand out to students buckling down studying all over campus. It's a great way we like to give something back to a community that gives so much to us!

This week, we're giving you a peek into how we prepare for finals. There's lots of studying involved, and tons of interesting ways to take a study break. Between lunges in the library and Grey's Anatomy during study sessions, we're never bored when we're together. It may get a little stressful when there's a lot of work to be done, but at the end of the day, it's always a great week when you have the opportunity to attend the #1 public university in the world!

We'll see you next time. As always, GO BEARS!

2015-16 Women's NCAA Power Rankings Third Edition

Morgan Priestley | December 16th, 2015

With the fall season/invites on the books, it's time to reevaluate with the latest edition of our 2015-16 Women's NCAA Power Rankings. The past 3-4 weeks have been our first real look at what each team might bring to the table in March. Some teams rest more than others for their fall invites, so we tried to hold back on knee-jerk reactions. However, fast swimming is fast swimming, and those who majorly impressed were at least rewarded a bit. There's still a lot of swimming to be done, but for now, here's our top 20 teams:

20. DUKE BLUE DEVILS (previous rank: N/R)

Three relays in the top 12 nationally, and Madeline Rusch is looking like a legitimate #1 sprinter for the Blue Devils.

19. UCLA BRUINS (previous rank: #20)

Surprisingly deep team, with a lot of potential NCAA qualifiers. The big question, though, is if they'll score. Katie Grover (6th in the 200 fly nationally) and Linnea Mack (16th in the 100 back) are currently in the best spots to do that.

18. PURDUE BOILERMAKERS (previous rank N/R)

Boiler up! Purdue gets a much-deserved bump after a great ending to their fall that included three swimmers (Emily Fogle, Alexa Davis, and Kaersten Meitz) clocking two individual top 10 swims nationally.

17. NORTH CAROLINA TARHEELS (previous rank: #11)

After storming through the regular season, the Tarheels were "meh" at their Nike Cup Invite. UNC doesn't have a single swimmer sitting in the top 20 of an NCAA event nationally, and just one relay currently sits in the top 16. That's not atypical for UNC, which historically has been a late-breaking team come championship season, but the uncertainty leads to a slide in the rankings.

16. MISSOURI TIGERS (previous rank: #19)

Taking their fall invite results with a grain of salt (the Tigers typically go all-in), but can't dismiss a team with two breaststrokers under 59 seconds in November. Along with Hannah Stevens, should be very competitive in the medleys.

15. FLORIDA GATORS (previous rank: #17)

Still no breaststroker, but overall, their fall invite was a step in the right direction. Plus, it's tough to be outside of the top 15 with Natalie Hinds and Jessica Thielmann on your roster.

14. MICHIGAN WOLVERINES (previous rank: #16)

Swam long course only at AT&T Winter Nationals, but Siobhan Haughey, Gillian Ryan, Ali Deloof, and Clara Smiddy all made at least one individual A-final.

13. INDIANA HOOSIERS (previous rank: #13)

Marie Chamberlain filling in admirably for Brooklynn Snodgrass. Her 51.87 last month in the 100 back was a lifetime best by over a second. Having Lilly King helps, too, and gives them a phenomenal front-half on the medley relay.

12. ARIZONA WILDCATS (previous rank: #13)

Traditionally puts a lot in their fall invites, but even with that, the Wildcats surpassed initial expectations. Freshman Annie Ochitwa was the most impressive, headlined by her 'A' cut in the 100 fly.

11. AUBURN TIGERS (previous rank: #10)

No super stars that fly off the page, but the Tigers have five relays in the top 16, and at least one legitimate NCAA scoring threat in almost every event.

10. NC STATE WOLFPACK (previous rank: #8)

Minimal depth, but are going to be sneaky good in the four sprint relays. Alexa Zevnik (top 20 in five events, top 8 in two) is looking like one of the country's most improved swimmers.

9. USC TROJANS (previous rank: #12)

There they are! After wondering what was up down in SoCal, the Trojans impressed at the Texas Invite. Freshmen Kirsten Vose and Riley Scott look like they've shored up the breaststroke eventsa big question mark coming into the season.

8. LOUISVILLE CARDINALS (previous rank: #6)

Kelsi Worrell is typically the source of big news for the Cardinals, but freshman Mallory Comerford made some noise last month, as well, cutting three seconds of her best 200 free to get under the 1:45 barrier. She might be the final piece that Louisville needs to get over the hump and take an NCAA medley relay title, and gives the Cardinals more options to boost their 800 free relay the team's weakest at NCAA's last season.

7. TENNESSEE VOLUNTEERS (previous rank: #9)

Lauren Driscoll sighting! The senior crushed her previous best in the 400 IM, and now sits 5th nationally at 4:06.64. The swim of the meet, though, was freshman Madeline Banic dropping a 51.19 in the 100 fly.

6. TEXAS A&M AGGIES (previous rank: #7)

Took home the title at their home invite last month. Although Stanford primarily stole the show, the Aggies had some great swims of their own; Bethany Galat dropped a 4:04.06 in the 400 IM, good for 2nd in the country, and more than 5 seconds faster than she was at this point last season.

5. TEXAS LONGHORNS (previous rank: #5)

Looked great against USC and Arizona squads that came in ready to swim fast. Top 10 in all five relays, and Tasija Karosas and Madisyn Cox recorded NCAA individual 'A' cuts.

4. VIRGINIA CAVALIERS (previous rank: #4)

Lights-out in November again, posting top-ranked times in 3 of 5 relays. The swimmers outside their big four (Courtney Bartholomew, Leah Smith, Laura Simon, Kaitlyn Jones) are going to be the key. The performances Ellen Thomas, Caitlin Cooper, and freshman Megan Moroneyparticularly on freestyle relayswill be the difference-makers in their goal to come away with team hardware in March.

3. CALIFORNIA GOLDEN BEARS (previous rank: #1)

It's tough to make a true comparison with where they were last year, given their primary fall meet was (long course) U.S. Nationals, but nonetheless, the Bears were far from impressive to close out the first half of the season. Last year, the Bears had 17 swims sitting in the top five going into the New Year. This season, they only have 5, including converted times.

2. STANFORD CARDINAL (previous rank: #3)

The IM events were huge weakness for Stanford last season. Ella Eastin made it clear that wouldn't be the case while she's around. Her 4:01 400 IM would have run away with NCAA's last season.

1. GEORGIA BULLDOGS (previous rank: #2)

Nice to see Olivia Smoliga swimming better again; her nation-leading times in the 50 (21.82) and 100 freestyle (47.69) are faster than she was at any point last season. Hali Flickinger only seems to be getting better, too. Overall, the 'Dawgs currently have more swims in the top 5 (12), the top 8 (15) and the top 16 (26) through the first half of the season than any other team. Cal was the better team on paper coming into the year, but until they show us more, Georgia will sit #1.

2015 Swammy Awards: Farida Osman, Female African Swimmer of the Year

Lani Cabrera | December 20th, 2015

2015 Female African Swimmer of the Year: Farida Osman

Egyptian Farida Osman has been making history in swimming since 2011, setting both national and continental records over the past few years.

In 2011, Osman became the first ever Egyptian swimmer to win a Junior World Championship title in her most distinguished event, the 50m fly. Since then, she has continued to improve in that event setting both the Egyptian and African records this year.

At the 2013 World Championships in Barcelona, Spain, Osman set a national record in the semi-finals in the 50m butterfly (26.12), and became the first ever Egyptian swimmer to qualify for a final at any FINA World Championships.

2015 has been her most impressive year yet, swimming lifetime bests and setting national records in all of her top events. The 20-year old broke her previous Egyptian record in the 50m fly at the 2015 Arena Pro Swim Series meet in Santa Clara, setting a new national record and African record after she touched the pads in 26.08. She also set the Egyptian national record at the same meet in the 50m freestyle, finishing in 24.92.

At the 2015 World Championships in Kazan, Russia, Osman reset the Egyptian and African record in the 50m fly, finishing in 5th in the final in a time of 25.78. She also finished the 100m fly in Russia in a new national record time of 58.22

A month later at the 2015 All African Games in the Republic of Congo, Osman set another national record in the women's 100m freestyle after she clocked in in a personal best time of 55.41. At this meet she swam a 26.31 in the 50m butterfly, which currently ranks her 10th in the world for this season.

In the past few years, this event’s depth is incredible. The United States has several swimmers who could win Olympic gold, including Missy Franklin. Natalie Coughlin, former gold medalist in this event, is also signed up; both will try to chase top-seeded Katinka Hosszu. Don’t forget about other U.S. superstars like Elizabeth Pelton, Rachel Bootsma, Kathleen Baker, and others. Olympic. Quality. Final.

8 Matchups To Watch, All Links For 2016 Austin Pro Swim Series

1. Sarah Sjostrom vs. Dana Vollmer, 100 fly

The new world record-holder against the old. The 2012 Olympic champ against the odds-on favorite for the 2016 Olympic crown. This one might not project to be the closest matchup right now (it would be a pretty big surprise if a post-retirement Vollmer could challenge the red-hot Sjostrom mid-season, though this race certainly could turn close by Rio), but the intrigue of a dominant Olympic champ coming out of retirement to face the young swimmer who has risen to world dominance in her absence is just too good to pass up.

Outsiders to watch: American teenager Katie McLaughlin is an insane talent with great closing speed. Canada has its own bright young star in Noemie Thomas, a college teammate to McLaughlin at Cal. 2012 U.S. Olympian Claire Donahue is also in the mix.

2. Nathan Adrian vs. Santo Condorelli, 100 free

4. David Plummer vs. Matt Grevers vs. Ryan Murphy, 100 back

5. Women’s 100 Free Field vs. Women’s 200 Free Field

There are too many big names in both of these events to come up with a concise headline, so let’s shake things up and pit the two fields against each other. Which event will turn out to be more impressive in Austin? The 100 kicks off the meet, featuring Sweden’s Sjostrom ahead of a field that includes every type of swimmer under the sun. There are established world swimming stars (Missy Franklin, Katinka Hosszu), wily veterans (Natalie Coughlin), fast-rising juniors (Canada’s Taylor Ruck, American Katie Ledecky) and more. In the 200, sprinters like Coughlin drop out but are replaced by the Allison Schmitts of the world while distance swimmers like world champ Ledecky become more dangerous. Olympic champ Schmitt is joined by Shannon Vreeland and Leah Smith in that longer race.

Outsiders to watch: the 15-year-old Ruck should be fun to watch in both races. Abbey Weitzeil is an up-and-coming American who trains alongside Condorelli at the Canyons Aquatic Club. And keep an eye on 18-year-olds McLaughlin (USA) and Emily Overholt (Canada) in the 200.

6. Michael Phelps vs. Tom Shields, 100 fly

7. American Breaststrokers vs. Each Other

Then there’s Cal’s Josh Prenot, who could be a major factor in the 200 breast.

Those 2 Canadian studs will surely rank in the Top 5 of their recruiting class (2018). Just keeping me fingers crossed that they won't do a Katie Drabot on us and go over to the dark side at the last moment lol :p

Reckon our Bears this season can field as potent of a top end depth in the fly as they traditionally have in the back, judging by Dana's insta below, where 4 of the Top 8 seeds are :bear:s! (compared to 1 Swedish WR holder, 1 furd alumna, and 1 Canuck high schooler)

While I had hoped to have quite a few more months of training under my belt before racing her , I'm excited to be in a heat with her again and race my heart out! I love a good race, and this is sure to be one! ❤️ #bringit #letsdothis

National Teamer Katie McLaughlin Scratches Austin PSS With Neck Injury

Highly-touted Cal freshman and U.S. National Teamer Katie McLaughlin will not swim at the Arena Pro Swim Series at Austin the weekend due to a neck injury she suffered on the team's training trip.

McLaughlin, who was a part of the U.S. World Championships team last summer, injured her neck in Hawaii, where the California collegiate team has been training between academic semesters.

One of the nation's top freshmen, McLaughlin was set to swim the 100 free, 200 free, 100 fly and 200 fly in Austin. She's among the best American butterflyers at just 18 years of age, and was seeded 2nd in both the 100 and 200 butterfly.

Maybe the bigger story, though, is that McLaughlin is set to be a key contributor to Cal's NCAA title defense. The Golden Bears graduated mega-star Missy Franklin after winning last year's collegiate title, but brought in a stellar freshman class to reload, with McLaughlin central in that recruiting effort.

The California athletics department released a statement announcing McLaughlin's scratch from the meet, noting that she has been cleared to train both in and out of the water and expressing optimism at getting McLaughlin back at full strength in competition:

"Cal freshman Katie McLaughlin sustained a neck injury during the team's recent training trip to Hawaii. She is cleared to continue modified training both in the water and on dry land during recovery, however will be held out of competition until the injury has healed. Katie will be evaluated by Cal's medical staff on a regular basis and is expected to make a full recovery."

Bears Back In Berkeley After Memorable Training Trip

By Cal Athletics on Tue, January 19, 2016

Hey, Bear fans!

We're back in Berkeley for the beginning of the spring semester after an awesome winter vacation. After spending some time at home with our families for the holidays, the team reconvened in Oahu for our 2016 training trip.

Training trips are a pivotal part of any team's season, and it's no different for us. Between intense pool and ocean workouts, the team managed to explore a significant amount of the island through shave ice trips, hikes and multiple different boogie board and surfing locations. There were days spent at the North Shore ogling some awe-inspiring 20 foot waves and eating at a team favorite shrimp truck, and there were days spent laying on the sand in Waikiki doing absolutely nothing.

In the pool, we worked a lot on race relevant swimming and the small things, like relay starts and finishes, to tune up for our upcoming dual meets and championship season. The team also had an opportunity to host a swim clinic for some local club teams in Oahu. We split up team members in to specialty stroke groups, and got to share some of our favorite drills and lessons about the sport with swimmers of varying ages and experiences. Seeing these swimmers constantly smiling and sharing with us why they love to swim was a great reminder of why we've continued in this sport, and why we love it, too.

This week, we're competing with the men's team against The University of Arizona and Arizona State in back-to back dual meets on Friday and Saturday. These are the last competitions we'll host at Spieker this season, so come out and support!

As always, GO BEARS! We'll catch you next time.

The seventh-ranked Cal women's swimming team returns to Spieker Aquatics Complex for the first time since October when it hosts No. 9 Arizona and Arizona State this weekend. Both meets will be double-duals along with the men's team, and Saturday's showdown against the Sun Devils will also be Senior Day for the Bears' seven seniors on this year's roster. 3. CALIFORNIA GOLDEN BEARS (previous rank: #3)

Haven't competed in short course since November, but the Bears had some pretty impressive January swims at the Arena Pro Swim Series in Austin this past weekend, particularly from their fly group; Noemie Thomas, Kelly Naze, and Farida Osman all went under 59.2 in the 100, finishing 3-4-5 behind world record holders Sarah Sjostrom and Dana Vollmer.

Definitely haven't given up on this season, but coming in third at NCAAs would be rough. There are no super teams, but even without Cierra, Bears have enough potential to win. Georgia's going to be running on fumes after this season and the furdettes are ascending. Obviously admirable for Teri to give her best swimmers more LCM experience this season, but rough to compromise and potentially leave another title on the table in the process.

Freshman Kathleen Baker Takes Three Races For Cal

BERKELEY The No. 7 Cal women's swimming & diving team returned home for the first time in three months and made a resounding statement as it resumed the dual meet college season with a 185-114 victory over No. 9 Arizona at rainy Spieker Aquatics Complex on Friday.

Freshman Kathleen Baker won three events the 100 backstroke, 200 backstroke and 200 individual medley while fellow freshman Amy Bilquist captured both the 100 and 200 freestyle. Bilquist set a lifetime best with her race in the 200 free with a time of 1:47.44.

"It was great to swim at home again," Cal coach Teri McKeever said. "We haven't had many meets at home. I thought we really did a good job today."

Friday marked Cal's first home meet since defeating San Jose State on Oct. 30.

Senior Kelly Naze also set a personal best in winning the 200 butterfly with a mark of 1:57.89. Freshman Phoebe LaMay won the 1-meter diving event with a score of 289.58 and finished second on the 3-meter board at 301.65.

The double-dual meet with the Cal men's team took place in a steady rain for most of the afternoon.

"The weather was not great, but also I think in the long term if you can perform under these circumstances, you should be able to perform anywhere," McKeever said."

The Bears, now 4-0 in dual meets and 3-0 in the Pac-12, return to Spieker Pool on Saturday with a dual meet against Arizona State. It will be another double-dual with the men's team, and it will also serve as Senior Day as it is the last home meet of the season. Cal will honor its seven seniors in a pre-meet ceremony.

"We're still kind of finding ourselves," McKeever said. "That's what we kind of hope to do this weekend and next week. We want to put the final touches together so we can get as many people as possible to NCAAs and get people back healthy."
